From Chambery, here into a rest area, to put on flesh again, to quiet my jumping nerves and to fatten up for the return to the front. To-day I have no desire to hasten that return. I write it down frankly, - as I intend to keep honesty with myself and my impressions. There are other times when I feel the tug and fret to be back. It is my mood to-day, as war is a succession of nu related moods. This morning I ask no more of life than to continue here at my Open window in the buzzing month of August, looking down on a drowsy world in animal content. A pipe of tobacco and the noonday meal Pinard, pommes de terre frites, and perhaps a ragout with a touch of onions - all these simple joys to my keen senses seem the limit of human desires. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days and Deeds: A Hundred Years Ago The large brown house on the hill was the jolliest place to Visit that Roger knew anything about. To be sure, there were no children to play with. Baby Alice was not old enough to do much more than sleep or cry, and of course she could not know what a pleasant playmate her big, merry grandfather could be. But Roger knew, though Colonel Davenport was not his grandfather, only his great aunt's husband, and not really a bit related. Still, no grand father could make a boy have a better time; and when, one May morning, Mrs. Saybrook took her son for a month's Visit at the big house, Roger had a right to be the happiest child in the whole Connecticut colony. One thing, however, seemed hard. Colonel Davenport might not be at home very much, for he belonged that year to the Connecticut legislature. It was not so easy to go from Hart ford to Stamford as it is now, and the colonel did not try to get home Often, although some times he would come on Friday or Saturday and spend Sunday with his family. Indeed, he was expected the very week when Roger and his mother began their visit; and with him would come Governor Trumbull and three or four other men who were the colonel's close friends. The people at the big house needed Roger's mother to help get ready for so many guests; they needed a little boy, too, who could run on errands and do all the things that the colonel's own boys had done years before. On Friday afternoon, after three days of run ning and waiting on the little boy's part, every thing was ready for the visitors. Roger had not wasted a minute that day. Long before break fast he had thrown corn to the hungry hens, had led Dobbin and Dolly to the spring, and had helped Jonas, the hired man, to milk the cows. He did not really do any milking himself, but he helped Jonas wonderfully, for he could carry the milking stool and the empty pails. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 101: July 20, 1939 It does not pay in religious matters, matters that pertain to our eternal salvation, to be indifferent, neutral, or lukewarm. The Lord, through one of His servants, addressing the angel' of the church, of the Laodiceans, said: I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. To members of the Church I would ask, are any of us of that class today - lukewarm, indifferent and neutral? There is a lesson to be learned from the experiences of others who have gone before. I firmly believe that God had something to do with the recording of these events, and having them preserved and handed down to us from generation to generation, that We might read, . And reading, profit thereby. We are under direct command of the Lord to search the scriptures, where these things are contained. It was fitting that, numbered among the men, great and small, who cherished his friendship was the Chief Executive of the country to which he gave his allegiance. From President Franklin D. Roosevelt came this greeting on the, occasion of President Ivins' last birthday anniversary: As an old friend, I send you my congratulations and best wishes on your eighty-second birthday. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: From the team that brought you The Obstacle Is the Way and Ego Is the Enemy, a daily devotional of Stoic meditations—an instant Wall Street Journal and USA Today Bestseller. Why have history's greatest minds—from George Washington to Frederick the Great to Ralph Waldo Emerson, along with today's top performers from Super Bowl-winning football coaches to CEOs and celebrities—embraced the wisdom of the ancient Stoics? Because they realize that the most valuable wisdom is timeless and that philosophy is for living a better life, not a classroom exercise. The Daily Stoic offers 366 days of Stoic insights and exercises, featuring all-new translations from the Emperor Marcus Aurelius, the playwright Seneca, or slave-turned-philosopher Epictetus, as well as lesser-known luminaries like Zeno, Cleanthes, and Musonius Rufus. Every day of the year you'll find one of their pithy, powerful quotations, as well as historical anecdotes, provocative commentary, and a helpful glossary of Greek terms. By following these teachings over the course of a year (and, indeed, for years to come) you'll find the serenity, self-knowledge, and resilience you need to live well.
