Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the history of mentalities, psychohistory, and the history of colonialist discourses. For those interested in the development of Third World and of post-colonialist cultures, the book offers a new set of insights and methodologies. "My cow comes to haunt me," said the bush-widow in Tasmania in the early 1830s, and the men out on the fringes of empire who listened, journalist, historian and traveller, smugly laughed at her ignorance and superstition. The colonial encounter between European and non-European takes place on and in the fringes of two or more cultures. They encounter words dialectically, playing off different forms of power and with ramifications in several directions. My Cow Comes to Haunt Me focuses on the problem of colonial discourses and especially the "topos" of the first encounter within the algebra of history of mentalities, and does so with an optic that includes the European intrusion into the Pacific islands.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the perceptions of European travelling writers about southern Western Australia between 1850 and 1914. Theirs was a narrow vision of space and people in the region, shaped by their individual personalities, their position in society, and the prevailing discourses and ideologies of the age. Christian, Enlightenment, and Romantic philosophies had a major influence on their responses to the land – its cultivation and conservation, and its aesthetic qualities – and on their views of both indigenous and settler colonial society – their class and assumptions of race and ethnicity. The travelling men and women perpetuated an idealised view of a colonised landscape, and a “pioneer” community that eliminated class struggle and inequality, even though an analysis of their observations suggests otherwise. Nevertheless, although limited, their narratives are invaluable as a reflection of opinions, attitudes and knowledge prevalent during an age of imperialism. Their perspectives reveal unique viewpoints that differ from those of immigrants who wrote about their hopes and fears in making a new life for themselves. These travellers were economically secure, literate and educated; foundations which provide an insight into the way power and privilege, implicit in their writings, governed the way they imagined Western Australia in the colonial and immediate post-federation period. The tinted lenses through which European travelling writers narrowly observed space and people, presented a mythical, imagined sense of southern Western Australia.

Hopkins, the Smuts Professor of Commonwealth History, in which Professor Hopkins assesses the present state of and prospects for imperial and Commonwealth history. He attempts to explain why the study of the British Empire and Commonwealth should regain the central place it once enjoyed in historical studies, and indicates ways in which new approaches to an old subject might enable it to do so.

Book excerpt: The subject of colonialism encompasses a multitude of analytic concerns about the nature and extent of political controls, economic inequalities, and social hierarchies. Underlying the varied conditions of power and subordination are the diverse, sometimes contested representations of human difference that motivate, support, or question colonial practices and projects. Unstable Images concentrates a critical gaze on this discursive side of colonialism through close readings of a series of Western texts on the people of New Ireland from the 1870s to the 1930s--when the status of the New Ireland-New Britain region changed from precolonial to German control and finally to a League of Nations mandated Australian administration.
