Download or read book Poetic Potpourri written by Robert Turner and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-05-31 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the poems were written to describe various travel adventures, whereas others describe specific landmarks that were of interest. Many are just whimsical subjects that would pop into my mind as I was trying to go to sleep. Rather than counting sheep, I would compose a poem and hope that I would remember it in the morning so I could put the words on paper in poetic form. There is one epic poem on the Battle of Chancellorsville and one on Stonewall Jackson’s death and several Irish poems. As I said earlier, this is an eclectic collection. I have enjoyed writing them, and I hope you enjoy reading them.

Book excerpt: One of bestselling author Georgette Heyer's most suspenseful Regency romances, The Quiet Gentleman combines an ingenious mystery plot with her signature witty style and effervescently engaging characters. Less than a hero's welcome... Returning to his family seat from Waterloo, Gervase Frant, seventh Earl of St Erth, could have expected more enthusiasm for his homecoming. His quiet cousin, stepmother, and young half-brother seem openly disappointed that he survived the wars. And when he begins to fall for his half-brother's sweetheart, his chilly reception goes from unfriendly to positively murderous. Praise for Georgette Heyer and The Quiet Gentleman: "Fascinating reading...authentic atmosphere in a delightful English tale"—Chicago Sunday Tribune "Georgette Heyer was one of the great protagonists of the historical novel in the post-war golden age of the form. Her regency romances are delightful light reading, and her historical novels such as The Spanish Bride and An Infamous Army demonstrate how fiction and history can work together to make a valuable literary form."—Philippa Gregory, bestselling author

Book Synopsis The End of the Poem by : Paul Muldoon
Download or read book The End of the Poem written by Paul Muldoon and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2007-08-21 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The End of the Poem, Paul Muldoon, "the most significant English-language poet born since the Second World War" (The Times Literary Supplement), presents engaging, rigorous, and insightful explorations of a diverse group of poems, from Yeats's "All Souls' Night" to Stevie Smith's "I Remember" to Fernando Pessoa's "Autopsychography." Here Muldoon reminds us that the word "poem" comes, via French, from the Latin and Greek: "a thing made or created." He asks: Can a poem ever be a freestanding, discrete structure, or must it always interface with the whole of its author's bibliography—and biography? Muldoon explores the boundlessness, the illimitability, created by influence, what Robert Frost meant when he insisted that "the way to read a poem in prose or verse is in the light of all the other poems ever written." And he writes of the boundaries or borders between writer and reader and the extent to which one determines the role of the other. At the end, Muldoon returns to the most fruitful, and fraught, aspect of the phrase "the end of the poem": the interpretation that centers on the "aim" or "function" of a poem, and the question of whether or not the end of the poem is the beginning of criticism. Irreverent, deeply learned, often funny, and always stimulating, The End of the Poem is a vigorous and accessible approach to looking at poetry anew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culver City completed its one-year centennial celebration on September 20, 2017, exactly 100 years from the day Harry Culver received his City Charter. Paul Jacobs, former mayor and President of the Centennial Celebration Committee, said that during the year we all searched for words which could describe the pride and enjoyment we have experienced living in and visiting Culver City. The Centennial Poetry Contest organized by Culver City's Honorary Artist Laureate for Poetry, Dr. Hoult, who is the editor of this book, provided an opportunity to articulate our feelings in poetic form which simple words could not. This collection pays tribute to Culver City through the writing and reflections of its citizens and visitors and conveys a sense of pride and love for the city. Biographies and additional information from the Culver City Historical Society about Culver City makes this a special keepsake.

Download or read book Ageism Unmasked written by Tracey Gendron and published by Steerforth. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we still tolerate stereotypes and discrimination based on age? This bold account of the history and present-day realities of ageism by a nationally recognized gerontologist and speaker uncovers ageism's roots, impact, and how each of us can create a new reality of elderhood. Ageism Unmasked shifts the lens, enabling us to see that we tolerate, and sometimes actively promote, attitudes and behaviors toward differently aged people that we would reject and condemn if applied to any other group. It peels back the layers to expose how cultural norms and unconscious prejudices have seeped into our lives, silently shaping our treatment of others based on their age and our own misconceptions about aging—and about ourselves. Offering an all-inclusive approach, Dr. Tracey Gendron reveals the biases behind our false understanding of aging, sharing powerful opportunities for personal growth along with strategies to help create an anti-ageist society. Ageism Unmasked will help readers let go of our desperate need to stay young… exposing how we personally, systematically, structurally, and institutionally stigmatize being old. Ageism Unmasked will help readers appreciate both the challenges and opportunities of how we all age… showing how ageism is prejudice towards both younger and older people. Ageism Unmasked will help readers reset our expectations for getting old… providing the tools to anticipate and experience elderhood as a time of renewed meaning and purpose, empowering each of us to create our own definition of successful aging. Ageism Unmasked continues Dr. Gendron's transformative work inspiring people of all ages to embrace aging as our universal and lifelong process of developing over time — biologically, psychologically, socially, and spiritually.
