Book excerpt: When night falls my bed is an air balloon.I sail through the slipsiverse, close by the moon.I float above treetops where fluttertufts are sleepingAnd flowering hills where the whifflepigs go creeping;Ponds strung with starlight that glitter like glass,A floog with her velvet nose bent to the grass. Such treasures I spy on! My bed in the treesSwings me up high, like a circus trapeze. Now the cool, night-rustling airSlips through my finger-gaps, ripples my hair; Now we glide over water, the moon's silver lightBlown by a cloudpuff into the bight,Adrift on the sea where the dream-shapes float; When night falls my bed is a sailing boat.A beautifully presented picture book with two front covers, the text can be read from front to back and vice versa. The mirror form poem meets in the middle in a stunning centrepiece image as the two children in the story (twins, one in an air balloon, the other a sailing boat) meet in the clouds!

Book excerpt: Her cold breath on my face made each hair on my body rise. She grabbed my throat in a flash and I felt her nails digging into my skin. How does it feel to look into the eyes of the dead? When quirky, run-of-the-mill teenager, Lana-Ann Manson is faced with terrifying dreams that seep into her reality, she comes to learn that her presumably average existence may not be as predictable as she had imagined it to be. Imprisoned in a world of continuous dj vu due to her spine-tingling dreams, Lana-Ann attempts to live a normal life with her aunt Margaret and annoyingly perfect, older sister Carol. She becomes wrapped up in a paranormal world where she finds that she can manipulate dreams and people. With the help of a friend, Lana-Ann learns about her gift of dream-walking but is that enough to maintain the balance of life, love and everything else important to her? The Age of the Dream-Walker has arrived

Book excerpt: Part political thriller, part fantasy, part near-future science fiction, part family drama, Doors of Death and Life is both exciting and thoughtful, a literate excursion into X-Files territory. In How Like a God, Rob Lewis gave his friend Edwin Barbarossa the Pearl of Immortality that had once belonged to Gilgamesh. Seven years later, the space shuttle ferrying Edwin home from a stint on the new moon colony catches fire. Everyone dies except Edwin. First he's hailed as a hero. Then he disappears. It's up to Rob to rescue him from the man who will stop at nothing to take the secret of immortality for himself. He had Strawberry Hill House built in Twickenham, south-west London, reviving the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors. His literary reputation rests on his Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764) and his Letters, which are of significant social and political interest. He was the son of first British Prime Minister Sir Robert Walpole. As he was childless, his barony descended to his cousin of the same surname, who was created the new Earl of Orford.

Book excerpt: You were both so entertained with the old stories I told you one evening lately, of what I recollected to have seen and heard from my childhood of the courts of King George the First, and of his son the Prince of Wales, afterwards George the Second, and of the latter's princess, since Queen Caroline; and you expressed such wishes that I would commit those passages (for they are scarce worthy of the title even of anecdotes) to writing, that, having no greater pleasure than to please you both, nor any more important or laudable occupation, I will begin to satisfy the repetition of your curiosity. But observe, I promise no more than to begin; for I not only cannot answer that I shall have patience to continue, but my memory is still so fresh, or rather so retentive of trifles which first made impression on it, that it is very possible my life (turned of seventy-one) may be exhausted before my stock of remembrances; especially as I am sensible of the garrulity of old age, and of its eagerness of relating whatever it recollects, whether of moment or not. Thus, while I fancy I am complying with you, I may only be indulging myself, and consequently may wander into many digressions for which you will not care a straw, and which may intercept the completion of my design. Patience, therefore young ladies; and if you coin an old gentleman into narratives, you must expect a good deal of alloy. I engage for no method, no regularity, no polish. My narrative will probably resemble siege-pieces, which are struck of any promiscuous metals; and, though they bear the impress of some sovereign's name, only serve to quiet the garrison for the moment, and afterwards are merely hoarded by collectors and virtuosos, who think their series not complete, unless they have even the coins of base metal of every reign. As I date from my nonage, I must have laid up no state secrets. Most of the facts I am going to tell you though new to you and to most of the present age, were known perhaps at the time to my nurse and my tutors. Thus, my stories will have nothing to do with history. Luckily, there have appeared within these three months two publications, that will serve as precedents for whatever I am going to say: I mean Les Fragments of the Correspondence of the Duchess of Orleans, and those of the M`emoires of the Duc de St. Simon. Nothing more d`ecousu than both: they tell you what they please; or rather, what their editors have pleased to let them tell. In one respect I shall be less satisfactory. They knew and were well acquainted, or thought they were, with their personages. I did not at ten years old, penetrate characters; and as George 1. died at the period where my reminiscence begins, and was rather a good sort of man than a shining king; and as the Duchess of Kendal was no genius, I heard very little of either when he and her power were no more. In fact, the reign of George 1. was little more than the proem to the history of England Under the House of Brunswick. That family was established here by surmounting a rebellion; to which settlement perhaps the phrensy of the South Sea scheme contributed, by diverting the national attention from the game of faction to the delirium of stockjobbing; and even faction was split into fractions by the quarrel between the king and the heir apparent-another interlude, which authorizes me to call the reign of George 1. a proem to the history of the reigning House of Brunswick, so successively agitated by parallel feuds.

Book excerpt: Herman Strickland is a die-hard English professor and self-professed nerd who lives and breathes science fiction, history, and rock and roll. As he meticulously tracks his daily activities in journals and battles a chronic health issue, he tackles the grammar and language problems of Colorado youth and attempts to make a difference in their lives. Thanks to Alfred P. Handleman, his long-time friend who makes it his mission to keep him in line, Herman manages to remember most of his students names and somehow endures his troublesome physical ailments. One night when the threat of a tornado causes Herman to seek cover in his bathtub for the night, he passes the time by reflecting on a past filled with life lessons and a surprise encounter with his niece, Jade. But it is what happens after the tornado passes that will change everything in Hermans life forever as he receives a shocking diagnosis. Teacups and Sandstorms is the tale of one mans journey through life as he fights a silent battle with Crohns Disease with help from a rather entertaining group of friends.
