Download or read book First Cities written by Dean Saitta and published by . This book was released on 2024-02-26 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Element describes and synthesizes archaeological knowledge of humankind's first cities for the purpose of strengthening a comparative understanding of urbanism across space and time. Case studies are drawn from ancient Mesopotamia, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. They cover over 9000 years of city building. Cases exemplify the 'deep history' of urbanism in the classic heartlands of civilization, as well as lesser-known urban phenomena in other areas and time periods. The Element discusses the relevance of this knowledge to a number of contemporary urban challenges around food security, service provision, housing, ethnic co-existence, governance, and sustainability. This study seeks to enrich scholarly debates about the urban condition, and inspire new ideas for urban policy, planning, and placemaking in the twenty first century.

Download or read book Proceedings of the 3rd International Symposium of Information and Internet Technology (SYMINTECH 2018) written by Mohd Azlishah Othman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers the proceedings of a symposium on the role of Internet technologies and how they can transform and improve people’s lives. The Internet is essentially a massive database where all types of information can be shared and transmitted. This can be done passively in the form of non-interactive websites and blogs; or it can be done actively in the form of file sharing and document up- and downloading. Thanks to these technologies, a wealth of information is now available to anyone who can access the Internet. Moreover, Internet technologies are constantly improving: growing faster, offering more diverse information, and supporting processes that would have been impossible in the past. As a result, they have changed, and will continue to change, the way that the world does business and how people interact in their day-to-day lives. In conclusion, the symposium and these proceedings provide a valuable opportunity for leading researchers, engineers and professionals around the globe to discuss the latest advances that are helping the world move forward. They also facilitate the exchange of new ideas in the fields of communication technology to create a dialogue between these groups concerning the latest innovations, trends and concerns, practical challenges and potential solutions in the field of Internet technologies.

Download or read book The Recyclables written by Kalma Downe and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too much angst for you? Me too. This is an attempt to show how silly and dangerous the my way or the highway attitudes have become. The allegory takes place in a zero sort recycling bin with national left and right wing newspapers arguing over contemporary topics like healthcare, gun control and more. There are lovers triangles and hacked cars to lighten some of the heavier dialogue. The author believes we are more in agreement, at least regarding goals than we might think. If we can stop talking past each other with a bit more respect, we might accomplish something. With the world being economically entwined and getting more dangerous, we need a press core we can depend on. Can you be more open to other thoughts and different people?

Book excerpt: The story is about a young man called Pedro Hidalgo who has a vision impairment and this vision impairment is characterized by colored spots that randomly appear in his line of sight. As he grows older and starts going to school, his eyesight becomes worse and his mother grows concerned. She wishes to take him to United States of America before it gets worse, but his country, Cuba, is undergoing a crisis and it was very difficult to leave. They eventually do manage to leave but when they find a doctor that is competent enough to help, he says that it is too late for Pedro to recover from his condition. In light of this situation, Pedro’s mother decides to enroll him into a school for visually impaired children called the New York institute of the education of the blind. From there Pedro details his life at the school where he spent 10 years. Pedro talks about the difficulty of adjusting to America as he did not know English very well. He has many fond memories from his prepubescent two adult years. He also discusses the many historical events that took place, as it was a very volatile time in Cuba and the United States. What stands out most in this book is how his mother has been his biggest supporter throughout his journey of moving to and growing up in America. He also details his time spent on the Rowing Team of blind students, job hunting as a visually impaired person while still in high school, enrolling into university to further his education, and developing relationships with girlfriends.
