Book Synopsis My Strangled City and Other Essays by : Gordon Rohlehr
Download or read book My Strangled City and Other Essays written by Gordon Rohlehr and published by Caribbean Modern Classics. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gordon Rohlehr's critical work is outstanding in the balance it achieves between its particularity and its breadth--from the detailed unpacking of a poem's inner workings, to locating Caribbean writing in the sweep of political and cultural history--and the equal respect he pays to literary and to popular cultural forms. Indeed, along with Kamau Brathwaite, Sylvia Wynter and Kenneth Ramchand, no critic has done more to establish the subject of Caribbean writing and its distinctive aesthetics. These essays, written between 1969 to 1986, first published in radical campaigning newspapers such as Tapia and Moko, and first collected in 1992, were the work of a young academic who was both changing the university curriculum, and deeply engaged with the less privileged world outside the campus. Rohlehr catches Caribbean writing at the point when it leaves behind its nationalist hopes and begins to challenge the complex realities of independence. My Strangled City, a record of how Trinidad's poets responded to the upsurge of revolutionary hopes, radical shams, repressions and disappointed dreams of 1964-1975, is an indispensable account of those times and the diversity of literary response that continues to speak to the present. And if in these essays Trinidad is Rohlehr's primary focus, his perspective is genuinely regional. His native Guyana is always present in his thoughts and several essays show his deep interest in the cultural productions of a "dread" Jamaica, and in making insightful comparisons between, for instance, reggae and calypso.

Download or read book This Compost written by Jed Rasula and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-09-01 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry, for Jed Rasula, bears traces of our entanglement with our surroundings, and these traces define a collective voice in modern poetry independent of the more specific influences and backgrounds of the poets themselves. In This Compost Rasula surveys both the convictions asserted by American poets and the poetics they develop in their craft, all with an eye toward an emerging ecological worldview. Rasula begins by examining poets associated with Black Mountain College in the 1950s--Charles Olson, Robert Creeley, and Robert Duncan--and their successors. But This Compost extends to include earlier poets like Robinson Jeffers, Ezra Pound, Louis Zukofsky, Kenneth Rexroth, and Muriel Rukeyser, as well as Clayton Eshleman, Gary Snyder, Michael McClure, and other contemporary poets. Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson also make appearances. Rasula draws this diverse group of poets together, uncovering how the past is a "compost" fertilizing the present. He looks at the heritage of ancient lore and the legacy of modern history and colonial violence as factors contributing to ecological imperatives in modern poetry. This Compost restores the dialogue between poetic language and the geophysical, biological realm of nature that so much postmodern discourse has sought to silence. It is a fully developed, carefully argued book that deals with an underrepresented element in modern American culture, where the natural world and those who write about it have been greatly neglected in contemporary literary history and theory.

Book Synopsis Nine Musings on Time by : John Gribbin
Download or read book Nine Musings on Time written by John Gribbin and published by Icon Books. This book was released on 2022-10-06 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time travel is a familiar theme of science fiction, but is it really possible? Surprisingly, time travel is not forbidden by the laws of physics - and John Gribbin argues that if it is not impossible then it must be possible. Gribbin brilliantly illustrates the possibilities of time travel by comparing familiar themes from science fiction with their real-world scientific counterparts, including Einstein's theories of relativity, black holes, quantum physics, and the multiverse, illuminated by examples from the fictional tales of Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven, Carl Sagan and others. The result is an entertaining guide to some deep mysteries of the Universe which may leave you wondering whether time actually passes at all, and if it does, whether we are moving forwards or backwards. A must-read for science fiction fans and anyone intrigued by deep science.
Book Synopsis Frances Burney and the Arts by : Francesca Saggini
Download or read book Frances Burney and the Arts written by Francesca Saggini and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-06 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays by leading scholars in Burney studies provides an innovative, interdisciplinary critical consideration of the relationship of one of the major authors of the long English Romantic period with the arts. The encounter was not devoid of tensions and indeed often required a degree of wrangling on Burney’s part. This was a revealing and at times contentious dialogue, allowing us to reconstruct in an original and highly focused way the feminine negotiation with such key concepts of the late Enlightenment and Romanticism as virtue, reputation, creativity, originality, artistic expression, and self-construction. While there is now a flourishing body of work on Frances Burney and, more broadly, Romantic women authors, this book concentrates for the first time on the rich artistic and material context that surrounded, supported, and shaped Frances Burney’s oeuvre.
