Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On a hotter than Hades evening in southwest Arkansas, a preacher arrives at a crossroad village to convince those gathered that if they follow the word of God, they will not have to experience the real heat of Hades. In a heap of sweaty flesh, Miss Elsie Waylock plops in the middle of a center-row bench, unaware that the bench is dangerously sagging and threatening to crack at any moment. It is what happens next that sends Jimmy Hickok into a fiery hell created by none other than his mother. In Musings, Mutterings, and Aw Shucks, author Elizabeth Carroll Foster shares an entertaining collection of short stories, essays, and features that highlight eclectic characters, embellish true experiences, and eloquently illustrate unconditional love, disappointment, and friendship. Divided into sections that comprise short stories followed by essays, Foster shares a poignant, occasionally witty compilation that allows others to reminisce about holidays gone by, sympathize with middle-aged women unwittingly caught up on the cusp of the Womens Liberation Movement, empathize with young single mothers, and love a golden retriever just as he loves his master. Musings, Mutterings, and Aw Shucks provides an unforgettable glimpse into both imaginary and real-life worlds that share a timeless and fresh perspective on life, love, and the pursuit of happiness.

Book excerpt: Snatches of memory and whisks of reverie have been the ingredients that were blended into this hopeful fifth memoir that, like the other four, was never intended to be about the author but about the passing scenes, the people, places, and events that he, the self-proclaimed Footloose Forester, witnessed and cherished. The hodgepodge of undated recollections in various places and spanning over 50 years came with learning bits and pieces about archeology, cultures, plants and animals, exotic places, and viewpoints that went beyond everyday experiences. Hence, the title Musings to Memoirs with an enduring masthead Essays, Stories, Adventures, Dreams. Photo evidence has been introduced into individual stories as much as is permissible, to add a clarity of their own. The author hopes that his family and friends will retain warm memories of the past by virtue of the photos alone and where words fail.

Book excerpt: Bernard Fraley's "Tall Tales, Short Stories, and Ventilated Conversations" is a remarkable collection that explores the fusion of prose and poetry in a unique and captivating way. Through an assortment of stories, poems, and conversations, Fraley delivers a refreshing take on the relationship between different forms of literature. The concept of "ventilated" writing is a recurring form throughout the book, and the author masterfully employs this technique to convey his ideas and emotions. Ventilated poetry, in particular, is an excellent example of Fraley's style, which emphasizes free verse and a focus on personal experiences and emotions. The result is a poetic language that is raw, unfiltered, and relatable to modern readers. The book is a mix of various forms and textures, and it's apparent that Fraley has put in considerable effort to create a synergy between prose and poetry. The result is a collection that seeks synchronicity, and every piece in the book has been carefully crafted to create a balance between the two. The stories in the book are equally compelling, with each one presenting a unique tale that keeps the reader engaged. Fraley's writing style is fluid, and he has a knack for creating vivid imagery that paints a clear picture in the reader's mind. From funny anecdotes to more serious stories, the author covers a wide range of topics that showcase his versatility as a writer. Overall, "Tall Tales, Short Stories, and Ventilated Conversations" is a fantastic read for anyone who enjoys exploring the boundaries of literature. Fraley's ability to seamlessly blend prose and poetry into a cohesive whole is a testament to his talent as a writer. This book is a must-read for those who appreciate the beauty and power of language, and it's sure to leave a lasting impression on anyone who picks it up. The Cage 3 Production Group

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether sprawled on barstools or preaching from pulpits, people need to make sense of their world, and in Jim Sanderson's world of West Texas, pulpits and barstools are where many of them do so. Sanderson himself stood for many years at a podium, teaching at a community college in Odessa, Texas. There, tired of academic papers and sometimes losing the distinction between fiction and nonfiction, he turned to the world around him to figure out the meaning (or meanings) of education and of culture itself. In a series of autobiographical ruminations, Sanderson develops the theme that frontier wildness is still alive, especially in West Texas, though it may be repressed by fundamentalist religion and conservative politics. West Texans, he finds, have to reconcile the two sides of their contrary natures: the farmer, best represented by the fundamental church, and the frontiersman, best represented by the sleazy bar. Through this theme of internal conflict, Sanderson weaves his experiences of art and censorship, Texas myths in film and fiction, the interaction of Hispanic culture with the culture of West Texas, contradictions posed by academic interests in vocational teaching institutions, intellectual elitism versus the real world, and West Texas women's definition and self-definition. Through the examples of his students, he shows how the quest for the West Texas myth--freedom, liberation, and fulfillment--is always transforming, whether for good or bad. In the end, he recognizes that his insights may tell more about himself than about West Texas, but by trying to make meaning out of his experience, he tells us something about the way all of us learn and think about ourselves.

Book excerpt: The book title "A Telling Experience" has a double meaning: 1) something curious that you were part of, and 2) the sharing of your particular story. An experience becomes even more meaningful by being told. The thing may be familiar, or it may be as strange as The Twilight Zone (but true). The idea of this book is that everybody's life is somehow a Tall Tale. This book is my Tall Tale; my ordinary, strange, telling experience: A bewildered youth, a bumbling smitten young adult, a middle-age striver, finally a would-be philosopher. It's a wild ride. You'll laugh your head off and cry your eyes out, I promise! It's a bizarre collection, every chapter a story of its own, and every story a very Tall Tale! Each story is somehow like your own story, and like everybody else's too. We're all in the same boat, all on the same train. That's a comforting thought. Misery loves company, and so does joy. Richard M. Trask, Ph.D., University of Illinois (Old and Middle English), is author of "The Complete Writer's Guide: Questions of Language," and "Beowulf and Judith: Two Heroes." He taught courses in writing, History of the English Language, and Chaucer for thirty years in the University System of Maryland, then took up coastal living in Southport, North Carolina. Book excerpt: An immersive journey into the past, present, and future of a region many consider the Northeast’s wilderness backyard. Out of all the rural areas of the United States, including those in the West, which are bigger and propped up by more pervasive myths about adventure and nation and wilderness and freedom, the Adirondacks has accumulated a well-known identity beyond its boundaries. Untouched, unspoiled, it is defined by what we haven’t done to it. Combining author Matt Dallos’s personal observations with his thorough research of primary and secondary documents, In the Adirondacks rambles through the region to understand its significance within American culture and what lessons it might offer us for how we think about the environment. In vivid prose, Dallos digs through the region’s past and present to excavate a series of compelling stories and places: a moose named Harold, a hot dog mogul’s rustic mansion, an ecological restoration on an alpine summit, a hermit who demanded a helicopter ride, and a millionaire who dressed up as a Native American to rob a stagecoach. Along the way, Dallos listens to locals and tourists, visits wilderness areas and souvenir shops, and digs through archives in museums and libraries. In the Adirondacks blends lively history and immersive travel writing to explore the Adirondacks that captivated Dallos’s childhood imagination while presenting a compelling and entertaining story about America’s largest park outside of Alaska. The result is an inquisitive journey through the region’s bogs and lakes and boreal forests and the lives of residents and tourists. Dallos turned toward the region to understand why he couldn’t shake it from his mind. What he learned is that he’s not the only one. In the Adirondacks explores the history and future of the most complicated, contested park in North America, raising important questions about the role of environmental preservation and the great outdoors in American history and culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A poet celebrates the wonders of nature in a collection of essays that could almost serve as a coming-of-age memoir.” —Kirkus Reviews As a child, Nezhukumatathil called many places home: the grounds of a Kansas mental institution, where her Filipina mother was a doctor; the open skies and tall mountains of Arizona, where she hiked with her Indian father; and the chillier climes of western New York and Ohio. But no matter where she was transplanted—no matter how awkward the fit or forbidding the landscape—she was able to turn to our world’s fierce and funny creatures for guidance. “What the peacock can do,” she tells us, “is remind you of a home you will run away from and run back to all your life.” The axolotl teaches us to smile, even in the face of unkindness; the touch-me-not plant shows us how to shake off unwanted advances; the narwhal demonstrates how to survive in hostile environments. Even in the strange and the unlovely, Nezhukumatathil finds beauty and kinship. For it is this way with wonder: it requires that we are curious enough to look past the distractions in order to fully appreciate the world’s gifts. Warm, lyrical, and gorgeously illustrated by Fumi Nakamura, World of Wonders is a book of sustenance and joy.
