Book Synopsis Acoustical Analysis of the Tanpura by : Asoke Kumar Datta
Download or read book Acoustical Analysis of the Tanpura written by Asoke Kumar Datta and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-10-01 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the acoustic signal analysis and spectral dynamics of the tanpura, an Indian plucked string instrument. In addition, it strives to provide a logical and objective explanation of Indian classical musicians’ cognitive experience. Issues of relevance in this regard include the rich, mellifluous sound; the undulation of the loudness; the somewhat cyclical variation of the timbre, which is strongly related to these undulations; and the occasional perception of virtual notes to which no strings are tuned. The book analyses the materials used in the tanpura, the instrument’s simple structure, the intricacies of the lower bridge, and the theory of string vibration with variable string length. Cognitive experiments to provide the basis for perceptual quality assessment, as well as a methodology for ranking, are described. This is followed by acoustic analyses, both temporal and spectral, for sounds produced by male and female tanpuras, for each individual string and the combined one. An important aspect related to the naturalness of perceived sound, namely the intrinsically associated random perturbations, is also discussed. The apparent irregularities perceived in the acoustic signal produced by the tanpura reveal the importance of examining the signal from the perspective of non-linear analysis, an aspect that is also covered in the book. Given its scope, the book will appeal to students and researchers in the fields of music acoustics, artificial intelligence, and cognitive science, as well as musicians and musicologists around the world.

Download or read book PHYSICS OF INDIAN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS written by Nishanth P and published by . This book was released on 2023-03-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physics of Indian Musical Instruments is a branch of physics that deals with the scientific principles behind the construction and functioning of traditional musical instruments in India. These instruments include stringed instruments like sitar and sarod, percussion instruments like tabla and mridangam, and wind instruments like bansuri and shehnai. The physics of sound and acoustics play a significant role in the design and construction of Indian musical instruments. The pitch and timbre of each instrument depend on factors such as the length, thickness, and tension of the strings, the shape and size of the resonating chamber, and the position of the frets or holes. The study of Indian musical instruments also involves the exploration of the cultural and historical significance of each instrument, the different styles of playing and improvisation, and the relationship between music and spirituality in Indian culture. Researchers and scientists have conducted numerous studies on the physics of Indian musical instruments, which have contributed to a better understanding of the mechanics of sound and have led to advancements in instrument design and technology. This field of study continues to evolve, with ongoing research exploring new ways to optimize the acoustics and performance of these instruments.

Book Synopsis Music and Musical Thought in Early India by : Lewis Rowell
Download or read book Music and Musical Thought in Early India written by Lewis Rowell and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-12-25 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Offering a broad perspective of the philosophy, theory, and aesthetics of early Indian music and musical ideology, this study makes a unique contribution to our knowledge of the ancient foundations of India's musical culture. Lewis Rowell reconstructs the tunings, scales, modes, rhythms, gestures, formal patterns, and genres of Indian music from Vedic times to the thirteenth century, presenting not so much a history as a thematic analysis and interpretation of India's magnificent musical heritage. In Indian culture, music forms an integral part of a broad framework of ideas that includes philosophy, cosmology, religion, literature, and science. Rowell works with the known theoretical treatises and the oral tradition in an effort to place the technical details of musical practice in their full cultural context. Many quotations from the original Sanskrit appear here in English translation for the first time, and the necessary technical information is presented in terms accessible to the nonspecialist. These features, combined with Rowell's glossary of Sanskrit terms and extensive bibliography, make Music and Musical Thought in Early India an excellent introduction for the general reader and an indispensable reference for ethnomusicologists, historical musicologists, music theorists, and Indologists.
