Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are what we listen to. That's the premise of this study of 100 songs that have shaped and defined the American experience, from the Colonial period to the present. Well-known music author James Perone looks at 100 songs that helped tell America's story. He examines why each song became a hit, what cultural and social values it embodies, what issues it touches upon, what audiences it attracted, and what made it such a definitive part of American history and popular culture. The chart-topping singles presented here crossed gender, age, race, and class lines to appeal to the mass American audience. The book discusses patriotic songs, minstrel music, and sacred songs and hymns as well as music in the broad categories of pop, rock, hip hop, jazz, country, and folk. An introduction provides an overview of the history and significant issues raised by the songs as a whole. Individual songs are then presented chronologically, based on when they were written. The revealing commentary for each "hit" is not only interesting and fun, but reveals what it was like to live in the United States at a particular time by unveiling the social, economic, and political issues—as well as the musical tastes—that made life what it was.

Book excerpt: I didn't know what to expect when the time came for me to go on stage. An attendant with a clipboard and wearing headphones came out to get us one by one in the waiting room as if we were awaiting a Golden Ticket opportunity that may never come. I see cameramen around me, and I am always on the lookout to see if I can spot Giovanni from among those holding a microphone or balancing a Steadicam, but I haven't seen him all morning. Though I know what to sing, it would seem as though I don't know how to dress. The other women still in the waiting room with me are all dolled up from head to toe. Thick make-up. Fake eyelashes. Freshly painted nails. Curls trapped under layers of hairspray. And here I am with my jeans and basic heels, a green tank top sporting a large butterfly design. My hair is straight and parted off to the side. I did my own make-up though it looks like my competition hired professionals to do theirs. The woman stands at the doorway and shouts my name. She then escorts me to the main Studio down the hall and to the right. The production workers hardly pay attention to me as I enter from stage left. "Wait for your cue," she instructs. "And let's welcome to the stage, Brooke Evans!" I hear the voice of the show's host over the loudspeaker.

Having experienced over 80 foster homes, she's learned to pack her life into a single suitcase, carrying her dreams and aspirations with her. She finds solace in words, immersing herself in the stories of Nicholas Sparks, seeking a glimmer of hope in the constant upheaval of her life. Twany's vibrant personality, fueled by a love for classic rock and a yearning for connection, makes her a stark contrast in the predominantly Puerto Rican community of Kissimmee, Florida. Her world takes an unexpected turn when she's placed with the Middletons, a high-profile family with a Republican Congresswoman, her husband, a District Attorney, and their son Cyrus. Cyrus, also 13 years old, struggles with spastic diplegia, a form of cerebral palsy. Despite the outward appearances of a perfect life, both Cyrus and Twany carry their own invisible burdens, yearning for acceptance and a sense of belonging. This story is a tapestry woven with threads of hope, adversity, and the transformative power of friendship. It's a testament to the strength found in vulnerability and the beauty that emerges when hearts connect across differences. Join Twany and Cyrus as they navigate the complexities of their lives, finding solace and strength in an unexpected friendship. It is a journey that will challenge assumptions, inspire empathy, and leave you with a renewed sense of hope for the power of human connection.
