Book excerpt: For the learner who is blind, becoming a fully literate musician requires a range of skills and abilities including a functional knowledge of music braille, and the ability to audiate, or to assimilate and comprehend musical features. Unfortunately, due to individual and environmental circumstances, access to appropriate teaching and learning in either music braille or audiation, is often met with challenges. This thesis seeks to establish a deeper understanding of the music learning needs of students who are blind, and the relationship between music literacy, music braille, and audiation. The key focus is to ascertain whether Gordon’s Music Learning Theory (MLT) is an appropriate framework for a developing music braille pedagogy and a music braille curriculum. Initially a definition of music literacy is established along with a general understanding of how it is achieved. A further discussion explores elements of music braille teaching and learning, and considers the developmental characteristics of learners who are blind. From this platform, Gordon’s MLT is examined in detail to determine whether it meets the incomparable music learning needs of this small and unique population. An ethnographic case study of six diverse adult musicians who are blind offers detailed insights into their personal music learning experiences. The knowledge generated from the study provides comprehensive information regarding specific elements of teaching and learning music braille. While recognising the need for some adaptation, the study findings support Gordon’s notion of audiation and MLT principles.
