Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2023 in the subject Musicology - Miscellaneous, grade: Distinction, University of Venda, course: PhD in Arts and Social Sciences, language: English, abstract: A gap existed in the literature focusing on research overall between music aptitude and mathematical achievement within a South African context. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of music aptitude on mathematical achievement and to evaluate the most appropriate instruments for measuring musical talents and juxtaposing them with mathematical achievement using Gordon's AMMA tool to establish the connection between musical acumen and mathematical achievement in randomly selected learners. This study presented data that is now available for use by other researchers. The researcher used exploratory designs to generalise, assess, and test qualitative exploratory results, and to see if they could be generalised to a sample and a population as outlined in this dissertation. This research was evaluated in both qualitative and quantitative phases. The researcher focussed on how students of different ages, gender, intelligence levels, and musical abilities reacted to the AMMA (music aptitude test). The researcher was intrigued to see that most of the music students in the secondary school could compose with ease without prior knowledge of composition thus demonstrating an excellent theoretical background, which was prevalent in his discussions with colleagues. Having studied the previous school curriculum, they were exposed to since their childhood in primary school, the researcher could not find any relevant material linked to composition, form, structure or even analysis. Conversations with colleagues in the mathematical department revealed that the same students were doing extremely well academically in their mathematical subjects. This raised further questions for the researcher; was this merely a coincidence or was this increase in academic achievement due to the impact of their music studies? Most parents in the community encouraged their children to attend private schools and went out of their way financially to provide for a good education reinforcing good will and intentions to foster a brighter future for these learners. For students to achieve excellent results, aptitude played a prominent role in their musical development.

Book excerpt: Educators and therapists must unify and formulate new strategies to address the academic and social needs of a newly emerging at risk demographic, "the forgotten middle." Currently, a paradigm shift within educative music therapy, human development study, and educational psychology, suggests that curriculums need to integrate alternative methods into their framework, change the definition of at-risk, and recognize math aptitude and social competency as predictors of a student's ability to gain upward mobility and self-sufficiency. Musical interaction, although considered a secondary measure within educational forums, is a viable means to address the socio-emotional and academic needs of students. In order to substantiate the need for educators to integrate educative music therapy and social competency programs into standard curriculums, the researcher conducted a study using 23 students from a beginning high school guitar class and 4 students from a high school after-school program. These students participated in a ten-week study involving educative music therapy, social competency, and math aptitude. Participants completed the math fluency and math calculations sections of the Wechsler's Individual Achievement Test version 3, along with a questionnaire examining the participants' beliefs about the influence of music on math aptitude and social competency. Although the pre- and post-test results show no statistically significant difference between educative music therapy and math aptitude, the results from the questionnaires administered suggest that students perceive that social competency and musical interaction augment academic and social performance.

Book excerpt: A comparative analysis was used to study the results from a descriptive survey of selected middle school students in Grades 6, 7, and 8. Student responses to the survey tool was used to compare multiple variables of music participation and duration of various musical activities, such as singing and performing on instruments, to the mathematics results from Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (Georgia Department of Education, 2011. The results were analyzed with the use of the Pearson r correlation coefficient. The intensity of relationships was assessed with analysis of variance (ANOVA). A final t-test of means was conducted to compare the mathematics achievement of students, who reported that they participated in musical activities vs. students, who reported no participation in musical activities. It was found that there was a positive correlation between students' participation in music and their achievement in mathematics. In addition, there was a positive correlation between the variables of participation in vocal music and brass music, respectively, and mathematics achievement. The greatest correlation was between years of vocal music participation and mathematics achievement. The results from the ANOVA indicated that, when students participated in music for 3 years or more, there was a significant increase in mathematics scores. A final t-test of means indicated that there was no significant difference in the means of mathematics scores between students who had participated in musical activities in comparison to students who did not participate in musical activities.

Book excerpt: This book brings together scholars working in the field of mathematics education to examine the ways in which learners form particular relationships with mathematics in the context of formal schooling. While demand for the mathematically literate citizen increases, many learners continue to reject mathematics and experience it as excluding and exclusive, even when they succeed at it. In exploring this phenomenon, this volume focuses on learners' developing sense of self and their understanding of the part played by mathematics in it. It recognizes the part played by emotional responses, the functioning of classroom communities of practice, and by discourses of mathematics education in this process. It thus blends perspectives from psychoanalysis, socio-cultural theory and discursive approaches in a focus on the classic issues of selection and assessment, pedagogy, curriculum, choice, and teacher development.

Book excerpt: This quantitative, causal-comparative study examined the differences in reading and math achievement between students with disabilities who participated in music for two or more years and those who did not. This study’s purpose was to show if participating in music can impact the academic achievement of middle school students as measured by the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR). The covariate in the study was the reading and math STAAR scores from fifth-grade students in the 2015–2016 school year before they participated in middle school music. These students’ eighth-grade 2018–2019 math and reading scores were used to show if a difference exists between the academic achievement of students that took part in music and those who did not. A convenience sample of 155 students from an urban district was analyzed using ANCOVA statistical analysis to discover if there is a difference in the achievement of middle school students with disabilities when participating in music classes for two or more years as measured by their STAAR scores. The research found no statistically significant difference between the two groups. Future recommendations for research include duplication of the study with a larger sample or different population.

Book excerpt: The disparity in academic performance between groups of students has long been recognized in education. Recent findings reflect an increased awareness of how factors influence a student's ability to learn mathematics, in particular how a student's self-efficacy correlates with achievement. However, there is a lack of research that explores how these math efficacy beliefs are developed in students from low SES backgrounds.
