Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literature and Music in the Romantic Movementóthe twenty-four literary historians, musicologists, and philosophers who have contributed to this book have taken the conjunction "and" seriously. The eminently Romantic goal of unifying these two arts is scrutinized from several different angles in the attempt to break new critical ground both on aesthetic principles and in re-approaching some well-known works in "mixed genres" typical of the movement. Hans Schulte reminds us in his retrospect that what was a longed-for goal for the Romantics had once been a given, a fait accompli, to the ancient Greeks. But the book is not backward looking; on the contrary, it reveals both the aesthetic revolution at the beginning of the nineteenth century and its far reaching impact - as the title indicates - through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. The editors from the "Preface". Co-published with McMaster University.

Book excerpt: James Garratt explores the revival of sixteenth-century music in nineteenth-century Germany, focusing on the reception of Palestrina by critics, historians, performers and composers. He demonstrates that the Palestrina revival was just as significant for nineteenth-century culture as parallel movements in the other arts. Book Synopsis Schubert's Lieder and the Philosophy of Early German Romanticism by : Lisa Feurzeig
Download or read book Schubert's Lieder and the Philosophy of Early German Romanticism written by Lisa Feurzeig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Franz Schubert's settings of poetry by Friedrich Schlegel and Novalis introduces the fascinating world of early German Romanticism in the 1790s, when an energetic group of bold young thinkers radically changed the landscape of European thought. Schubert's encounters with early Romantic poetry some twenty years later reanimated some of the movement's central ideas. Schubert set eleven texts from Schlegel's Abendröte poetic cycle and six poems drawn from Novalis' religious and erotic poetry. Through detailed analyses of how various musical structures in these songs mirror and sometimes even explicate the central ideas of the poems, this book argues that Schubert was an abstract thinker who used his medium of music to diagram the complex ideas of a highly intellectual movement. A comparison is made to the hermeneutic theory of that time, primarily that of Schleiermacher, who was himself linked to the early Romantics. Through exploration of ideas such as Schlegel's representation of the necessary interdependence of part and whole and Novalis' strong association of religious and erotic experience, along with their musical representations by Schubert, this book opens an intriguing world of thought for modern readers. At the same time, Feurzeig explores some of Schubert's little-known songs, which range from quirky to charming to exquisite.

Book Synopsis An Outline of German Romanticism (Classic Reprint) by : Allen Wilson Porterfield
Download or read book An Outline of German Romanticism (Classic Reprint) written by Allen Wilson Porterfield and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of German Romanticism This outline was prepared for the benefit of advanced students and those who teach advanced students. Suggested by unforgetable experience, it is the outgrowth of an impelling desire to enrich the efforts of those who give and to clarify the labors of those who receive. An attempt has been made to compile a textbook, a sort of literary almanac, that would cost but little in money and would save much time. Neither history nor prophecy can point to a century so abounding in spiritual phenomena as the one between 1766 and 1866, and the middle half of it is the richest. And the period from 1790 to 1815, the age of systematic Romanticism, admits of so many different methods of approach, that unless the master is able to eliminate the conventional, the scattered facts about which there is no dispute, the disciple will not be able to assimilate the essential, the meaning of the literature itself, about which there is so much discussion and on which, incidentally, the course is really supposed to be given. Data are as important in literature as in science; fancy always starts from facts. But when a teacher of literature is giving facts, he is giving what can be derived from many other sources, he is being unoriginal. Book Synopsis The Cambridge Companion to Music and Romanticism by : Benedict Taylor
Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to Music and Romanticism written by Benedict Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Companion presents a new understanding of the relationship between music and culture in and around the nineteenth century, and encourages readers to explore what Romanticism in music might mean today. Challenging the view that musical 'romanticism' is confined to a particular style or period, it reveals instead the multiple intersections between the phenomenon of Romanticism and music. Drawing on a variety of disciplinary approaches, and reflecting current scholarly debates across the humanities, it places music at the heart of a nexus of Romantic themes and concerns. Written by a dynamic team of leading younger scholars and established authorities, it gives a state-of-the-art yet accessible overview of current thinking on this popular topic.
Book Synopsis The Romantic Tradition in Germany by : Ronald Taylor
Download or read book The Romantic Tradition in Germany written by Ronald Taylor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-30 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1970, this book surveys the central philosophical and aesthetic doctrines which characterize German Romanticism. A selection of literary, philosophical and political essays by some of the most important German Romantic thinkers illustrates the principal themes: these range from philosophical idealism and aesthetic subjectivism to folklore and emergent German nationalism, from exotica and medievalism to irrationality and the metaphysics of music. Introductory essays explain the significance of the particular aspects of the Romantic tradition which are revealed in each passage, and commentaries not only elucidate allusions and references which are not immediately identifiable, but draw attention to wider issues, either in the work of that author or in the context of 19th Century German culture as a whole.
