Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of American Music This series of books brings together for the first time the materials for a history of American art. Heretofore there have been attempts to narrate some special period or feature of our artistic development, but the narrative has never been consecutive 01' conclusive. The present volumes begin with colonial times, and carry the record down to the year 1904. They are intended to cover the graphic, the plastic, the illustrative, the architectural, the musical, and the dramatic arts, and to recite the results in each department historically and critically. That the opinions ventured should be authoritative, the preparation of each volume has been placed in the hands of an expert, - 0ne who practises the craft whereof he writes. The series is therefore a history of American art written from the artist's point of view, and should have special value for that reason. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A General History of Music That the latest Histories of Music, which have been presented to the public in the desultory form of Lectures, ' do not meet the requirements of thoughtful readers has been asserted before now; and we have only to glance at such ao counts of concert and operatic performances as are interspersed with historical notices and re marks to be assured that the sources of informa tion accessible to the public at large flow neither freely nor clearly. Whether, and in what degree, the present Work has attained the end desired, I am not qualified to form an opinion; I beg merely to offer this assurance to the reader, that I have steadfastly and carefully kept in view the progressive development of Art, and instead of crowding the pages of this little book with bio graphical anecdotes cheaply collected, or names and titles of books, have strictly excluded every thing superfluous. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of English Music A Few words concerning the origin of this book are necessary. It was already begun during an illness in 1892, and arrangements were made for its publication. But upon further investigation, especially of the early MSS., I perceived that the wealth of most valuable material still unexamined was far greater than I had suspected; so great, in fact, as to modify my previous opinions concerning English music in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. What I had previously written had largely to be rejected, and the whole plan of the work was altered; while three years' study has been necessary before I could let the book be printed. A variety of accidents unfortunately prevented a systematic comparison of every proof-sheet with the original sources of information, a test I had intended to apply; should any mistakes have arisen thereby, they will be duly published as they are discovered, and corrected in future editions. The main hindrance, in this and other respects, has, of course, been my living away from London and the other great repositories of MSS.; but I am able in consequence to have a clearer view of the condition of music in the whole country, of our defects and their causes, than I should probably have acquired had I been a London musician, when it would have been difficult or impossible for me to perceive the effects of centralisation upon our musical life. A minor but a very real hindrance has been the unsystematic indexing of many important publications. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Music, Vol. 1 An attack was made thirty years ago on the assertion that Handel was not only a sacred composer, but was especially the founder of the epic element in music. It is, therefore, very satisfactory to observe the extent to which the truth of that assertion is now generally admitted this can also be said of the admission of the proof that the invention of the opera at Florence was due to a Tuscan School. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Music: A Handbook and Guide for Students While the ideal scope of the subject is thus wide, the field of a particular written history is at once less and more. It is less, because it is utterly impossible to compress into a Single book all the facts. It is more, because the practical historian must be something of a critic as he works, selecting certain groups of facts for emphasis, classifying them under logical heads, and seeking at every point to keep what he conceives to be of special importance in the foreground. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Imperial History and Encyclopedia of Music A dictionary of any language is properly supposed to contain all words in use in that language and also words which have been used in time past, but which have become obsolete. These obsolete words are 4included in order that the development and history of the language may be studied, and, for this reason, they are a very important part of such a work. This should also be true of a musical dictionary, as many terms which are not in use at the present time are of great value in the study of the history of music and also for a thorough understanding of old musical manuscripts. With this idea in mind, the list of terms given in this dictionary have been compiled, including not only obsolete terms but also as far as possible equivalents in the various languages. For this reason, the number of terms given in this dictionary is greater than that found in any other musical dictionary extant, numbering as it does, about fourteen thousand definitions. In all definitions, the aim has been to use only the simplest and clearest English, so that the definitions would be readily understood by the ordinary reader, as well as the most finished musician. This plan has been carried out, even in the definitions of terms related to such difficult subjects as Theory and Composition. The work contains a number of special features not covered in any other musical dictionary. Among them being, Dances, National Songs, Poetic Meters, Modes and the Parts of the Mass. Each of these has been defined under the general term and also each specific dance, song, meter, etc., has been included in its alphabetical place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Excursions in Musical History His book is intended for any reader who is interested in T music. It has been our aim to make it readable and popular in the sense of being easily comprehended by those who do not possess a technical knowledge of music but who are interested in it as a cultural factor and an art. Our idea has been to include, in untechnical language, much informa tion for everyday use, much that the concert-goer wants to know and that is either not given or is hidden away in the volumes of histories and encyclopaedias which must cover the whole field of music. The Excursions are made into social or intellectual periods, such as the reigns of Louis XV, Frederick the Great, the period of the Reformation, American Music and so on, or into subjects which are constantly presenting themselves to our notice, such as Tonality, Sacred Folk Song, Sonata Form, and others, of which the historical development is traced; frequently the parallel development of the other arts is also indicated. The serious student and the musician may find in these Excur sions information which will add to their store of historical and theoretical knowledge, especially as it is here brought into relation to great intellectual and religious movements. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Music and History This palatial music building is extraordinary even among the many sumptuous edifices possessed by some of our great music schools and conservatories. But what distinguishes it more than the eminently thoughtful and practical arrangement of its space is the instruction imparted within its walls. For this is a depart ment in a liberal arts college and not a school or conservatory of music. Needless to say, I do not wish to imply that an academic department of music is, by its very nature, superior to a school of music; it stands to reason that art comes first and its Study and criticism follow. What I mean is that in this country as in England, whence our collegiate system comes we tend to confuse the functions of the two institutions, with the result that music in the college, which 1s an institution of higher education (and perhaps even of learning), is often not taught as one of the liberal arts but as a skill, only tenuously related to the other subjects of instruction and intellectual endeavor. This college can take pride in the fact that it is not so at Vassar, for its music department puts to shame the under graduate division of many a great university. One man is re sponsible for this enlightened attitude. He not only virtually designed this building, but planned the curriculum, organized the fine library, and himself took charge of the historical courses that became models of their kind. I am happy to pay tribute to George Dickinson in his own home. Everyone knows about his achievements at Vassar, but he has done much more: he has vitally influenced the cause of musical education and scholarship all over the land. Now, as I turn to the business in hand, I do so with the feeling that lectures of this sort would not be delivered in our colleges were it not for his long and patient Work and determination to make music instruction in the college worthy of the sister disciplines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Music We have as relates to the ancient music of India only much about theory, but this is suf cient to give us an idea of the immense com plication of their musical system. The tones of the diatonic scale which they seem to have known, but whose importance as basis of a musical system they did not appreciate, were divided into semi tones, and these in their turn into other semi tones, quarter-tones, and yet smaller divisions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to the Study of Musical History and Criticism The topics and references contained in the following pages are intended as an aid to those who wish to study musical history and criticism in a systematic and scholar-like manner. The time has gone by when the authority of a single book or a Single author could meet the demands of an intelligent curiosity. In history, litera ture, - every department of research in which the reliance is wholly or partially upon books, it is now taken for granted that the only rational method is the examination of many authorities with the aid of abstracts, topics, references, and similar guides. The scheme of this present manual is to indicate what material exists in English for the study of musical history, and how that material may be used to the greatest advantage. The topics are synopses of lectures given at Oberlin College; but they are also of general utility, for they summarize the most important phases of the subject, and show the student along what lines his inquiry must proceed. The method is to treat the topics as questions, and find the answers in the references. The author has in general, avoided references to books that are difficult to procure. Only those articles in periodicals are cited which deal with subjects that are not so well or concisely covered in any of the books available, or which have a special interest given them by their authorship.
