Book excerpt: Excerpt from Muscular Exercises for Health and Grace The aim in preparing this book has been to furnish a simple jet complete system of exercises which shall give flexibility and control to every part of the body, and so give health and grace. No claim is made to having "originated a system," unless originating means taking the best from all sources and putting them together. The results obtained from the use of the system have been very gratifying, and again and again have pupils requested that it be put in book form. At last this has been accomplished, and the book is sent forth, hoping it may be the means of restoring and preserving health. We need this work in the schoolroom. It is not long flights of stairs and severe courses of study that ruin the health of the pupil. It is the abuse of the physique; The members of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, the rank and file as well as the leaders, need it, that they may work more easily and so accomplish more. Book excerpt: From Grammy-Award winning music superstar and actor Tim McGraw comes a one-of-a kind lifestyle book that melds his personal fitness transformation story with practical advice to inspire healthy changes in readers’ lives. Tim McGraw is as well-known for his unparalleled accomplishments in the entertainment industry as he is for his boundless energy—he is the embodiment of vitality and success. But only a decade ago, he found himself struggling with his health. The demands of his meteoric career and life on the road had taken a toll. McGraw came to a crossroads where knew that unless he made his physical health a priority, he would put his personal happiness and professional success at risk. In Grit & Grace, McGraw shares his transformation story along with encouragement, inspiration, and real-life, practical advice to help readers become healthy, strong and fit in mind and body. For the first time, McGraw will share the details of the mental and physical routine that got him in the best shape of his life. He suggests that there is no magic formula to getting stronger and healthier: it is about making a commitment to do and be better, and holding yourself accountable each day. McGraw didn’t follow a playbook or have a squad of trainers overseeing his every step. He describes his way of getting into shape as more "maverick"--tuning into a vision of what you personally want to achieve, staying focused, and putting in the work. McGraw says his physical transformation has ignited a whole-life transformation. "My mind is clearer, my sense of purpose is sharper, and my relationships are deeper. Consistent physical exercise helps me bring focus to my life and to the people who mean the most to me." In Grit & Grace, McGraw makes this transformation accessible to anyone, sharing with readers the physical and mental tools they can use to create the life they deserve.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kettlebells--those amazingly effective weights that look like bowling balls with handles--have become all the rage in high-end health clubs and boxing gyms everywhere. And this is the first mainstream how-to guide to guide on the subject. How can you get a complete training program that works the heart, builds muscle mass, increases endurance, and improves flexibility--without having to spend hours in the gym? The answer: kettlebells. That's the equipment elite Soviet athletes depended on to build their super-strength and win gold medals, and it's still the best way to get the body you've dreamed of. With the help of 150 color photos to illustrate every move, two certified trainers from New York's elite Equinox Club explain all the ins-and-outs (including safety) of this tough but accessible full-body workout. In addition to clearly explained exercises and routines, Victoria D. Gray and Smith Vatel provide tips on where to buy weights (and how to create your own), show how to set up a home workout space, and, most importantly, explain how to avoid injuries and accidents.

Book excerpt: The Christian life is built on three seemingly unremarkable practices: reading the Bible, prayer, and fellowship with other believers. However, according to David Mathis, such “habits of grace” are the God-designed channels through which his glorious grace flows—making them life-giving practices for all Christians. Whether it’s hearing God’s voice (the Word), having his ear (prayer), or participating in his body (fellowship), such spiritual rhythms of the Christian life have the power to awaken our souls to God’s glory and stir our hearts for lifelong service in his name. What’s more, these seemingly simple practices grant us access to a host of spiritual blessings that we can only begin to imagine this side of eternity—and the incredible joy that such blessings bring to God’s children today.

Book excerpt: "This is the second part of two books in a series dealing with the history of women, exercise, and corsets. The first book, Health, strength, grace and symmetry, vol. 1: muscular symmetry and fine condition...for the more athletic more balanced woman...involves advertisements and images in the mid-to-late 19th century. This project was built upon the images found in Bernard MacFadden's 1901 book The power and beauty of superb womanhood. What starts out to be a book about women and health, showing various exercises for physical self-improvement, seem to shift gears (at least for whoever was expected to be reading this book) for the women became topless, although the exercises involved didn't seem to involve that part of the body. This was extremely intriguing to me, since MacFadden was also the editor of a 1903 magazine I owned, Beauty and health, where some of the corset advertisements in this project came from, as well as some of the other exercising images. With all the writings involving exercise, once society got past the debate whether or not women should be exercising at all (in fear that it would take away their strength needed to produce children), the underlying message seemed to say, that you will need to be in shape in order to ensure happiness"--Vamp & Tramp website (viewed June 12, 2014)
