The skeletons belonged to a pair of murdered teenagers. For thirty-six years, the teens' identities remained a mystery. The teens' killer was never brought to justice. In the fall of 2015, the Mendocino teens were identified through DNA testing. The identifications raised a number of questions in the community. Who murdered the Mendocino teens? Why did the teens go unidentified for so long? Were their murders linked to a series of unsolved homicides in a neighboring county? Filled with gripping interviews and previously unreleased details about the Mendocino murders, Lost Coast Highway is the inside story of a shocking, multi-generational tragedy. It's the story the media wouldn't tell you-and the bureaucrats didn't want you to know.

Book excerpt: In the late summer of 2011, 35-year old Aaron Bassler, an allegedly mentally disturbed resident of Mendocino County, California, shot and killed two innocent victims - a well-liked conservationist and a much-admired city councilman and former mayor. These events sparked an unprecedented 36-day manhunt in the vast forested area east of the coastal town of Fort Bragg. The case involved local, state and federal officers from over a dozen law enforcement agencies, including various SWAT teams and the U.S. Marshals Service, an agency very experienced in searching for fugitives. However, the searchers were under the constant threat of being the next victims, and had never experienced a landscape like this. Meanwhile, Bassler had virtually grown up in this environment and knew that time and terrain were on his side. As Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allman recalls, "We had little to go on other than we knew we were searching for an armed and very dangerous Aaron Bassler, and that he was out there in the woods..."

Tsami's dreams of swashbuckling adventure are realized one day when they are visited by King's Commissioner', who selects them and assigns them to a task in service of the High King's Army. Book excerpt: A contemporary noir, Already Dead is the tangled story of Nelson Fairchild Jr., disenfranchised scion to a northern California land fortune. A relentless failure, Nelson has botched nearly every scheme he's attempted to pull off. Now his future lies in a potentially profitable marijuana patch hidden in the lush old-growth redwoods on the family land. Nelson has some serious problems. His marriage has fallen apart, and he may lose his land, cash and crop in the divorce. What's more, in need of some quick cash, he had foolishly agreed to smuggle $90,000 worth of cocaine through customs for Harry Lally, a major player in a drug syndicate. Chickening out just before bringing the drugs through, he flushed the powder. Now Lally wants him dead, and two goons are hot on his trail. Desperate, terrified and alone, for Nelson, there may be only one way out. This is Denis Johnson's biggest and most complex book to date, and it perfectly showcases his signature themes of fate, redemption and the unraveling of the fabric of today's society. Already Dead, with its masterful narrative of overlapping and entwined stories, will further fuel the acclaim that surrounds one of today's most fascinating writers.

The edition photographically transports you to actual murder sites along with images related to the case and perpetrator(s). The images and accompanying profiles offer a descriptive account and follow-up aftermath providing an important understanding into the far-reaching effects of each crime. The captured snapshots portray visual testimonies of extinguished lives removed by acts of violence. Crime scenes often revert back into unremarkable landscape or unassuming buildings over the ensuing years and decades. Several have altered little since their moment of infamy. Many are passed daily by pedestrian and vehicular traffic unaware of a location’s unique significance. California has been the site for many notorious homicides. Book excerpt: In the vein of Susan Orlean's The Orchid Thief and Deborah Feldman's Unorthodox, journalist Emily Brady journeys into a secretive subculture--one that marijuana built. Say the words "Humboldt County" to a stranger and you might receive a knowing grin. The name is infamous, and yet the place, and its inhabitants, have been nearly impenetrable. Until now. Humboldt is a narrative exploration of an insular community in Northern California, which for nearly 40 years has existed primarily on the cultivation and sale of marijuana. It's a place where business is done with thick wads of cash and savings are buried in the backyard. In Humboldt County, marijuana supports everything from fire departments to schools, but it comes with a heavy price. As legalization looms, the community stands at a crossroads and its inhabitants are deeply divided on the issue--some want to claim their rightful heritage as master growers and have their livelihood legitimized, others want to continue reaping the inflated profits of the black market. Emily Brady spent a year living with the highly secretive residents of Humboldt County, and her cast of eccentric, intimately drawn characters take us into a fascinating, alternate universe. It's the story of a small town that became dependent on a forbidden plant, and of how everything is changing as marijuana goes mainstream.

What demons drove this quiet handyman and nudist colony habitue to burn, mutilate, and murder four women he didn't even know? How did he overpower a woman and two teenaged girls? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Think gunfighter, and Wyatt Earp or Billy the Kid may come to mind, but what of Jim Moon? Joel Fowler? Zack Light? A host of other figures helped forge the gunfighter persona, but their stories have been lost to time. In a sequel to his Deadly Dozen, celebrated western historian Robert K. DeArment now offers more biographical portraits of lesser-known gunfighters—men who perhaps weren’t glorified in legend or song, but who were rightfully notorious in their day. DeArment has tracked down stories of gunmen from throughout the West—characters you won’t find in any of today’s western history encyclopedias but whose careers are colorfully described here. Photos of the men and telling quotations from primary sources make these characters come alive. In giving these men their due, DeArment takes readers back to the gunfighter culture spawned in part by the upheavals of the Civil War, to a time when deadly duels were part of the social fabric of frontier towns and the Code of the West was real. His vignettes offer telling insights into conditions on the frontier that created the gunfighters of legend. These overlooked shooters never won national headlines but made their own contributions to the blood and thunder of the Old West: people less than legends, but all the more fascinating because they were real. Readers who enjoyed DeArment’s Deadly Dozen will find this book equally captivating—as gripping as a showdown, twelve times over.

Book excerpt: “Fish Head Beach: The Silent and Senseless Murders of Lindsay Cutshall and Jason Allen” is a photo edition showcasing the Sonoma County beach and infamous 2004 crime site. Marques Vickers 95+ photographs capture the picturesque ocean and isolated shoreline that captivated the young midwestern couple prior to their execution during the late evening of August 14, 2004. Cutshall, 22 and her fiancé Allen, 26 were shot to death as they slept in separate sleeping bags on an obscured stretch of Fish Head Beach. They settled upon their sleeping arrangements during a weekend getaway from work because all of the nearby town of Jenner’s accommodation properties were fully booked. Their bodies were not discovered until Wednesday, August 18, when a Sheriff's helicopter was dispatched following a report of a man who was stranded on a cliff above Fish Head Beach. The helicopter spotted the bodies and notified the department. None of Cutshall's or Allen's belongings had been taken, ruling out robbery as a motive, and neither of the campers had been sexually assaulted. Their car, a battered red Ford Tempo was parked in a pullout spot on the side of Highway 1 in Jenner and untouched. A silent, single bullet to the skull had killed each. The evening overcast, common to northern Sonoma County, masked the moon and neither likely had any advanced warning that they were not alone. Despite exhaustive efforts by detectives, the scant evidence, no apparent motive and minimal clues have yielded no solid leads or suspects. A decade later, the case remains cold but open. The principal beach landmarks and disturbingly potential clues described in police reports have changed little. Sonoma County’s Russian River empties into the Pacific Ocean through a gulch severing Goat’s Rock Beach and Fish Head Beach adjacent to the town of Jenner, California situated on a winding stretch of the Pacific Coast Highway (California Highway 1). Like generations of precedent visitors Cutshall, 22, and Allen were moved by the splendor. Each recorded their impressions during the sunset of August 14, 2004 in a personal travel journal. “The sun is going down in the horizon,” Lindsay wrote. “All I see is the beams shining on the cliff face. And I know that God is awsome (sic). I look around and I see his creation all around me.” Jason wrote: “As I stir this Mac & Cheese I think to myself what a wonderful life. I’ve just spent two awsome (sic) days with my fiancé Lindsay. Can life ever be so perfect. Only with a person who is so great. God gives me this privilege in life and He has given me a wonderful woman to enjoy it.” It was the final entry recorded in their travel journal the day of their death.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “comprehensive” account of the cold case that “still captivate[s] the people of Campbell and Santa Clara County” (Culture Trip). On the morning of May 27, 1896, the peaceful township of Campbell awoke to shocking news. Six people were brutally murdered at the home of Colonel Richard P. McGlincy, one of the town’s most respected citizens. The suspect, James Dunham—the colonel’s son-in-law—fled the scene and disappeared into the hills of Mount Hamilton overlooking Santa Clara County. This heinous crime triggered a massive, nationwide manhunt while investigators pieced together the details. Author Tobin Gilman examines the mind and motives of the killer, the sensational media coverage and the colorful personalities associated with the protracted and unresolved pursuit of justice. Includes photos! “The book includes parts of Campbell’s history at the turn of the century, theories of what may have provoked the killings and the manhunt that never led to Dunham’s capture.”—The Mercury News
