Book excerpt: It is the first week of July, in the year 1956, and four teenaged siblings are spending time on a rural farm in Arkansas; bored and restless. They, along with their parents are just beginning their summer vacation paying the obligatory visit to the grandparents, and Uncle Romey, the adult son with Down's syndrome. Instead of spending their time searching for four-leafed clovers in the grass, the youngsters would rather be going to the beach every day and hanging out with their friends back home in Long Beach, California. The vacation seems as though it will be the same as the last oneand the one before that. But at least the arrival of an aunt and uncle and cousin makes things a little more fun for the youngsters, as they find ways to entertain themselves; which of course translates as getting into mischief. Also, with the arrival of the aunt and uncle, tensions begin to escalate between the adults when a long held secret, previously known only to the grandparents is brought to light. Then with the unexpected arrival of the argumentative, prodigal daughter, who has decided to join the family in the Fourth of July celebration, things really begin to heat up within the household and the dissention magnifies. What was expected to be a routine holiday celebration, turns into an exraordinary adventure. With the discovery of long buried human remains, the story unfolds into one of dark secrets, assault, deception, lies, dead bodies, ghosts, and murder; and the life of each remaining family member is affected forever.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of faction, lynching, murder, terror and counter-terror during the French Revolution. It examines factionalism in small towns like Aubagne near Marseille, and how this produced the murders and prison massacres of 1795-8. Another major theme is the convergence of lynching from below with official Terror from above. Although the Terror may have been designed to solve a national emergency in the spring of 1793, in southern France it permitted one faction to continue a struggle against its enemies, a struggle that had begun earlier over local issues like taxation and governance. It uses the techniques of micro-history to tell the story of the small town of Aubagne. It then extends the scope to places nearby like Marseille, Arles, and Aix-en-Provence. Along the way, it illuminates familiar topics like the activity of Clubs and revolutionary tribunals and then explores largely unexamined areas like lynching, the sociology of faction, the emergence of theories of violent fraternal democracy, and the nature of the White Terror.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irreverence and the Sacred brings together some of the most cutting edge, interdisciplinary, and international scholars working today in order to debate key issues in the critical and comparative study of religion. The project is inspired in large part by the work of Bruce Lincoln, whose influential and wide-ranging scholarship has consistently posed challenging, provocative, and often-irreverent questions that have really pushed the boundaries of the field of religious studies in important, sometimes controversial ways. Retracing the history of the discipline of religious studies, Lincoln argues that the field has tended to champion a "validating, feel-good" approach to religion, rather than posing more critical questions about religious claims to authority and their role in history, politics, and social change. A critical approach to the history of religions, he suggests, would focus on the human, temporal, and material aspects of phenomena that are claimed to have a superhuman, eternal, or transcendent status. This volume takes up Lincoln's challenge to "do better," by engaging in critical analyses of four key themes in the study of religion: myth, ritual, gender, and politics. The book also interrogates the "politics of scholarship" itself, critically examining the relations of power and material interests at work in the study as well as the practice of religion. The scholars involved in this project include not only some of the most important figures in the American study of religion--such as Wendy Doniger, Russell McCutcheon, Ivan Strenski, and Lincoln himself--but also European scholars whose work is hugely influential overseas but not as well known in the U.S.--such as Stefan Arvidsson, Claude Calame, Nicolas Meylan, and others.

Book excerpt: A confession fifty years in the making puts everyone’s favorite Paris détéctive très chic, Aimée Leduc, on a collision course with the “Hand,” a cabal of corrupt Parisian cops among who masterminded her father's murder—and among whose ranks he might have once found membership. When a friend’s child is kidnapped while wearing her daughter’s hoodie, Aimée realizes that the case has crossed into the realm of the personal in more ways than one. A dying man drags his oxygen machine into the office of Éric Besson, a lawyer in Paris’s 13th arrondissement. The old man, an accountant, is carrying a dilapidated notebook full of meticulous investment records. For decades, he has been helping a cadre of dirty cops launder stolen money. The notebook contains his full confession—he’s waited 50 years to make it, and now it can’t wait another day. He is adamant that Besson get the notebook into the hands of La Proc, Paris’s chief prosecuting attorney, so the corruption can finally be brought to light. But en route to La Proc, Besson’s courier—his assistant and nephew—is murdered, and the notebook disappears. Grief-stricken Éric Besson tries to hire private investigator Aimée Leduc to find the notebook, but she is reluctant to get involved. Her father was a cop and was murdered by the same dirty syndicate the notebook implicates. She’s not sure which she’s more afraid of, the dangerous men who would kill for the notebook or the idea that her father’s name might be among the dirty cops listed within it. Ultimately that’s the reason she must take the case, which leads her across the Left Bank, from the Cambodian enclave of Khmer Rouge refugees to the ancient royal tapestry factories to the modern art galleries.

Book excerpt: The tragedy of Jodi Arias and Travis Alexander captured the imagination and riveted attention of viewers around the world. When the murder trial of beautiful Jodi Arias was televised and beamed internationally into foreign homes, the tragic story that unfolded of this fatally stricken young Mormon union is not something that history will quickly forget, nor will the cries from Arias supporters who believe her to have been over sentenced, be easily silenced. Despite changing the name to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1838, the killing of handsome Travis Alexander smacked and reverberated with similarity to the murders of atonement committed in those early times, a fact not overlooked by those familiar with the historic origins of the Mormon Church. Yet this similarity was never raised in court by either defense or prosecution. Since her conviction for murder in the first degree, Jodi Arias is serving out a natural life sentence at Perryville Prison, handed down by Judge Sherry Stephens.

Book excerpt: "I should imagine this was murder, too, because it would be very difficult to build yourself into a heap of sandbags and then die..." In the blackout conditions of a wintry London night, amateur sleuth Agnes Kinghof and a young air-raid warden have stumbled upon a corpse stowed in the walls of their street's bomb shelter. As the police begin their investigation, the night is interrupted once again when Agnes' upstairs neighbour, Mrs. Sibley is terrorised by the sight of a grisly pig's head at her fourth-floor window. With the discovery of more sinister threats mysteriously signed "Pig-sticker," Agnes and her husband, Andrew—unable to resist a good mystery—begin their investigation to deduce the identity of a villain living amongst them in their block of flats. A witty and light-hearted mystery full of intriguing period detail, this rare gem of Golden Age crime returns to print for the first time since its publication in 1943. This edition includes an Introduction by award-winning author Martin Edwards.

Book excerpt: In 1932, the city of Natchez, Mississippi, reckoned with an unexpected influx of journalists and tourists as the lurid story of a local murder was splashed across headlines nationwide. Two eccentrics, Richard Dana and Octavia Dockery—known in the press as the "Wild Man" and the "Goat Woman"—enlisted an African American man named George Pearls to rob their reclusive neighbor, Jennie Merrill, at her estate. During the attempted robbery, Merrill was shot and killed. The crime drew national coverage when it came to light that Dana and Dockery, the alleged murderers, shared their huge, decaying antebellum mansion with their goats and other livestock, which prompted journalists to call the estate "Goat Castle." Pearls was killed by an Arkansas policeman in an unrelated incident before he could face trial. However, as was all too typical in the Jim Crow South, the white community demanded "justice," and an innocent black woman named Emily Burns was ultimately sent to prison for the murder of Merrill. Dana and Dockery not only avoided punishment but also lived to profit from the notoriety of the murder by opening their derelict home to tourists. Strange, fascinating, and sobering, Goat Castle tells the story of this local feud, killing, investigation, and trial, showing how a true crime tale of fallen southern grandeur and murder obscured an all too familiar story of racial injustice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EAVESDROPPING ON HISTORY. For lovers of history, there are many questions about the American War that have never been answered or that have been answered with obviously ridiculous lies. A perfect example is the lie about Fort Pillow. After Congress investigated the massacre it was found that eight of the men who testified as eyewitnesses before Congress were never there. But no one has ever asked who ordered those men to perjure themselves. Another example is the truth behind why Fort Sumter was shelled. The book is a page turner for those people who would love to eavesdrop on meetings where policy and crimes were fabricated. Listen in on a meeting Lincoln, Grant and Stanton are having on reneging on the Dix-Hill prisoner exchange program. Or listen in on a meeting Stanton is having with one of his employees John Wilkes Booth. Are you surprised? But most importantly it’s all about Lincoln. Keep an open mind about why he was so well preserved and why he behaved as he did. The book is a novel but most of the events are based on the evidence available as you shall see. That’s just a start of a book that took over 25 years of research to write!

The murder, which in the end led to the conviction and execution of Thomas C. Dula, also inspired the famous song, The Ballad of Tom Dooley. In this book I go through the surviving records from the time and tell the story based on these facts, before I try to give my own explanation of what actually happened in Western North Carolina in the difficult times following the American Civil War.
