Book Synopsis The Penalty is Death by : Marlin Shipman
Download or read book The Penalty is Death written by Marlin Shipman and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1872 Susan Eberhart was convicted of murder for helping her lover to kill his wife. The Atlanta Constitution ran a story about her hanging in Georgia that covered slightly more than four full columns of text. In an editorial sermon about her, the Constitution said that Miss Eberhart not only committed murder, but also committed adultery and "violated the sanctity of marriage." An 1890 article in the Elko Independent said of Elizabeth Potts, who was hanged for murder, "To her we look for everything that is gentle and kind and tender; and we can scarcely conceive her capable of committing the highest crime known to the law." Indeed, at the time, this attitude was also applied to women in general. By 1998 the press's and society's attitudes had changed dramatically. A columnist from Texas wrote that convicted murderess Karla Faye Tucker should not be spared just because she was a woman. The author went on to say that women could be just as violent and aggressive as men; the idea that women are defenseless and need men's protection "is probably the last vestige of institutionalized sexism that needs to be rubbed out."

Book Synopsis A Lifetime on Deadline by : George William Healy
Download or read book A Lifetime on Deadline written by George William Healy and published by Pelican Publishing. This book was released on with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this candid autobiography, George W. Healy, one of the South's, and the nation's, finest and most distinguished journalists, recalls the people and events that, during his career, left an indelible imprint on the history of the nation and the world. Healy, a Mississippi native, was a reporter who covered several major events of a turbulent time in history, a trusted friend of American presidents from Herbert Hoover to Richard Nixon, and an outspoken editor with solid views on what constituted a responsible press. His coverage of the Mississippi River flood of 1927 gained him nationwide recognition and caused Healy to make more contacts on a national level. The event was a launching pad for his journalistic career. George Healy served as editor of the New Orleans Times-Picayune for thirty-six years, directing it and its staff to a position of unquestioned excellence. He also served in the inner circles of government. In 1943, in the midst of World War II, Franklin Roosevelt asked him to serve as director of the domestic branch of the Office of War Information. By resisting political pressures, Healy bridged the gap between the need for military censorship and the publics right to know. George W. Healy was a precedent-setter throughout his career. His autobiography gives a unique and up-front look into his life and career, and an interesting time in our nations history. As Turner Catledge says in the book's foreword, "George Healy is a person of whom it can truly be said that he is a part of all hes met."
Download or read book Kingfish written by Richard D. White, Jr. and published by Random House. This book was released on 2009-03-25 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the moment he took office as governor in 1928 to the day an assassin’s bullet cut him down in 1935, Huey Long wielded all but dictatorial control over the state of Louisiana. A man of shameless ambition and ruthless vindictiveness, Long orchestrated elections, hired and fired thousands at will, and deployed the state militia as his personal police force. And yet, paradoxically, as governor and later as senator, Long did more good for the state’s poor and uneducated than any politician before or since. Outrageous demagogue or charismatic visionary? In this powerful new biography, Richard D. White, Jr., brings Huey Long to life in all his blazing, controversial glory. White taps invaluable new source material to present a fresh, vivid portrait of both the man and the Depression era that catapulted him to fame. From his boyhood in dirt-poor Winn Parish, Long knew he was destined for power–the problem was how to get it fast enough to satisfy his insatiable appetite. With cunning and crudity unheard of in Louisiana politics, Long crushed his opponents in the 1928 gubernatorial race, then immediately set about tightening his iron grip. The press attacked him viciously, the oil companies howled for his blood after he pushed through a controversial oil processing tax, but Long had the adulation of the people. In 1930, the Kingfish got himself elected senator, and then there was no stopping him. White’s account of Long’s heyday unfolds with the mesmerizing intensity of a movie. Pegged by President Roosevelt as “one of the two most dangerous men in the country,” Long organized a radical movement to redistribute money through his Share Our Wealth Society–and his gospel of pensions for all, a shorter workweek, and free college spread like wildfire. The Louisiana poor already worshiped him for building thousands of miles of roads and funding schools, hospitals, and universities; his outrageous antics on the Senate floor gained him a growing national base. By 1935, despite a barrage of corruption investigations, Huey Long announced that he was running for president. In the end, Long was a tragic hero–a power addict who squandered his genius and came close to destroying the very foundation of democratic rule. Kingfish is a balanced, lucid, and absolutely spellbinding portrait of the life and times of the most incendiary figure in the history of American politics.
