Make no mistake about it, education is big business and, like other big businesses, it is in big trouble. -Professor Mark C. Taylor, Columbia University, New York Times, Opinion, July 12, 2009. A young, salt-of-the-earth family is caught up in a cyclone of greed, after Dennis Winecoop accepts a position at Washington, D.C.'s Utopia University. Believing he was hired to advise graduate students in history, Professor Winecoop finds he is teaching a full schedule of Murder 101. The first lesson, it seems, occurred just days before he was hired, when his predecessor was found grotesquely murdered in his bath. The intrigues of multiple murders are the catalysts that drive this dynamic and compelling tale to a shocking conclusion. The events and characters of Murder Cum Laude reveal the ugly reality of Washington politics and one man's aggressive efforts to uncover the truth. A graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, author Bruce Zortman served as a top secret courier during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded a one-year Taussig Fellowship to the Free University in Berlin. As an NDEA Fellow, he earned his PhD with distinction from UCLA. His 25 years as a professional educator include positions at Santa Monica College and American University in Washington, D.C. He is the author of Hitler's Theater (1985), an acting textbook, scholarly articles and several produced plays. Presently, he is Commodore of the Tucson Sailing Club. Book excerpt: International Bestseller #1 U.K. Bestseller The Wall Street Journal Bestseller Los Angeles Times Bestseller In the summer of 1909, Sigmund Freud arrived by steamship in New York Harbor for a short visit to America. Though he would live another thirty years, he would never return to this country. Little is known about the week he spent in Manhattan, and Freud's biographers have long speculated as to why, in his later years, he referred to Americans as "savages" and "criminals." In The Interpretation of Murder, Jed Rubenfeld weaves the facts of Freud's visit into a riveting, atmospheric story of corruption and murder set all over turn-of-the-century New York. Drawing on case histories, Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the historical details of a city on the brink of modernity, The Interpretation of Murder introduces a brilliant new storyteller, a novelist who, in the words of The New York Times, "will be no ordinary pop-cultural sensation."

Book excerpt: The first story I remember writing for public dissemination was something called. "The Day the Gravity Left the Earth". I think I was nine or ten. Well, gravity never did leave the earth, but my imagination certainly did. It hasn't been entirely grounded since. Of course, somewhere on my way to becoming an adult I realized that Imagination alone wouldn't pay the bills and I wound up doing a lot of things that would. Some were ordinary. Some were less than ordinary. Some were just bizarre. There was a four-year stint in the Air Force, where I worked on base newspapers. Then I attended the University of South Florida where I graduated cum laude with a degree in journalism. I wrote for the St. Petersburg Times and the Tampa Tribune, and became an editor. My focus was mostly on the murder and mayhem side of the business. It wore thin. Somehow I parlayed my hard-core news experience into a staff position with a children's book publishing company. That satisfied me for a good chunk of time and it certainly rekindled the imaginative side of me, but when the company's fortunes sagged, I segued into freelance work. Along the way, I wrote stories -- stories that were long enough to qualify as bona fide novels, like In The Spirit of Murder.

Sergeant Cass Hasty and his partner Barney Stauffer were supposed to go to Sand Head Island to pick up a low level criminal by the name of Tootie McNiff. But when they get there, McNiff has escaped and they find themselves embroiled in the investigation of two tourists blown apart at a beach barbecue. The island has plenty of characters, most of whom are suspects, including a dancer with matrimony on her mind and a violent maniac with a habit of wandering away from the sanitarium as well as an assortment of rich drunks. Hasty's efforts to solve the crime before too many bodies pile up are complicated by the arrival of four Feds more interested in publicity than justice, and not only must he find the murderer, he must determine what the murder weapon was before he can solve the Cabana Murders.

Book excerpt: All is far from quiet on the home front in USA Today bestselling author Anna Lee Huber’s captivating mystery series, in which former Secret Service agent Verity Kent receives a visitor—who is being trailed by a killer . . . November 1919.A relaxing few weeks by the seaside with her husband, Sidney, could almost convince Verity Kent that life has returned to the pleasant rhythm of pre-war days. Then Verity’s beloved Great-Aunt Ilse lands on their doorstep. After years in war-ravaged Germany, Ilse has returned to England to repair her fragile health—and to escape trouble. Someone has been sending her anonymous threats, and Verity’s Secret Service contacts can only provide unsettling answers. Even deep in the Yorkshire Dales, where she joins Verity’s family for the holidays, Ilse encounters difficulties. Normally peaceful neighbors are hostile, seeking someone to blame for the losses they’ve endured. When Ilse’s maid is found dead, Verity must uncover whether this is anti-German sentiment taken to murderous lengths, or whether there is a more personal motive at work. Could Verity’s shadowy nemesis, Lord Ardmore, be involved? And if so, how much closer to home will the blow land when he inevitably strikes again? “…A treat for WWI buffs and the legion of fans who have grown fond of Verity.” —Publishers Weekly Praise for Anna Lee Huber’s Penny for Your Secrets “A historical mystery to delight fans of Agatha Christie or Daphne du Maurier.” —Bookpage “Stellar mystery . . . a great read for fans of the series and all who enjoyDownton Abbey-era fiction.” —Booklist

For no apparent reason, she is found lying on the floor of her apartment strangled to death. No note, no nothing. Three months later a high society "escort" meets a similar fate. A cryptic biblical reference is left behind, signed only by "J." Within the week, two more bodies show up. First, liberal theologian Noah Templeton is found drowned in his bathtub after winning the prestigious Sophia award. Another biblical reference, this time signed by "E." Seventy-two hours later atheist extraordinaire Winston Caine turns up dead in his hotel room. Caine is bludgeoned to death beyond recognition with a note from "D" pinned to his chest. J. E. D. Three down and one to go. All that remains is P. Who's next? J, E, D, and P, short-hand names for the anonymous writers of the first five books of the Old Testament. J, the Yahwhist. E, the Elohimist. D, the Deuteronomist. And P, the Priestly writer. But what does it all mean? There is an "evangelical Christian whacko" on the loose, single-handedly trying to rid the world of persons with loose morals and those heathens who don't fall in line. That's what GOD is saying. Not that God. The other one. G.O.D. Garrett Osborne Donalty, the nighttime shock jock who comes to you every night from seven to ten over radio station W.O.R.D. The police don't seem tuned in to GOD, though. Nor do they seem to have a clue. In fact, incredible as it sound, they may be in on it. It's either a "whacko," or a cover up, or??? Whatever it is, one by one the pieces of the puzzle seem to be falling into the hands of none other than Reverend Tucker Tolliver. All poor Tucker wants to do is to bring Sarah's killer to justice and get on with his life in the peaceful serenity of a brand new seminary named in his honor. But like it or not, he seems to be the only one connecting the dots, and the picture he gets when he connects them isn't very pretty. Sometimes seminaries aren't as peaceful and serene as they are cracked up to be.

Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of San Diego, Murder By The Numbers—The Righteous ONE, is a murder mystery that explores the world of the Enneagram, a personality typing system that is now being taught and used around the world by psychologists, therapists, counselors, teachers, religious leaders, writers, business executives, and a growing number of individuals, as a way of understanding human motivation and personality characteristics. When a prominent psychologist and Enneagram author is found dead, the apparent victim of a mercy killing, San Diego’s Portuguese-American chief-of-police, Eddie DeSilva, pairs up with Pauline Graham—a psychologist who uses the Enneagram personality typing system in her practice—to help prove the innocence of the victim’s daughter. Having just lost his wife of thirty years and been forced to retire following an officer-involved shooting, DeSilva quickly locks horns with the new chief-of-police for “meddling in police affairs” as he tries to solve the murder and, with Pauline’s help, comes to understand how the Enneagram can help explain some unhealthy choices—including his own.

Book excerpt: We now know vastly more about the killing of John F. Kennedy than was known 20 or 30 years ago, and new evidence is accumulating almost every day. This new evidence is being uncovered by the bold application of scientific and technological expertise to the assassination records, including the film, photographic, and autopsy records. Murder in Dealey Plaza presents the latest and best of the new assassination research. As a result of these freshly uncovered findings, it is possible to say with moral certainty and considerable scientific authority that the murder of President Kennedy was committed by a meticulously executed conspiracy which was then observed by an extensive cover-up.

That brisk morning, Dr. Dirk Greineder, 60, and his wife of 32 years, Mabel, took one of their dogs for a walk in Morses Pond park. A short time later, Dr. Greineder led police to the corpse of his wife. She'd been bludgeoned, stabbed and her throat slashed. Her husband claimed an unknown assailant had committed the act--possibly the same person responsible for two unsolved murders in nearby towns. A Double Life Dirk Greineder was a well-respected allergist whose home was valued at half a million dollars. He and Mabel had raised three children, who had all attended Yale, like their father. But the "good" doctor also indulged in a secret life involving phone sex, Internet porn, and motel trysts with prostitutes. A Family Destroyed A dogged investigation finally yielded enough evidence to lead to Greineder's arrest, and in a six-week trial that would make national headlines, he was supported by his three children, while the dead woman's sister and niece testified for the prosecution. There in the courtroom, a jury would learn the grisly details of cold-blooded murder. . .and the community of Wellesley would learn that you never really know your neighbors. . . 16 Pages Of Shocking Photos
