Book Synopsis Fight for Bangladesh by : Ziauddin M. Choudhury
Download or read book Fight for Bangladesh written by Ziauddin M. Choudhury and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-02-02 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bangladesh War of Liberation was fought in several fronts by people in all walks of life. While the main war is largely known by the battles fought by brave freedom fighters both inside and outside the borders of then East Pakistan, much of the war’s success depended on the resistance and random acts of bravery by people in all nooks and corners of the country. The ranks of these unknown and forgotten fighters for liberty were filled by students, farmers, small shop keepers, and village wives. They are the unsung heroes of the war of liberation who people may not remember. The author of this book spent much of the dark nine-month period as a young chief of civil administration two sub-districts (called sub-divisions) of the then Dhaka district- Munshiganj and Manikganj. Like the vast majority of his civil service colleagues working in the country that time he served under the watchful eyes of a malevolent army dictatorship, helplessly watching the atrocities as they continued to occur during those terrible months. Like all Bengali government officers working in the country that time he was a suspect in the eyes of the occupation forces and was subject to surveillance. While working through the difficult times the author also had the occasions to hear and witness some courageous acts of our people that in their own way registered a protest against the atrocities, and even frustrated the cruel agents of Pakistan Government. The articles in this book are the author’s personal accounts of events and occurrences in the most turbulent period of the national history of Bangladesh. Some of these are simply narrations of some dire events, some are stories of chicanery and treachery, and some are stories of bravery of people in the villages who suffered the tumultuous time. The book is an assembly of these articles around a common theme, and a message that 1971 was essentially a people’s war, a war we all fought to rid us of an evil that had descended on us, and had launched a wanton act of aggression and mayhem. The recollections are expected to help our new generation to realize that our freedom did not come cheap; and that the harrowing experience of their previous generation and the murderous sufferings they endured knew no gender or religious boundaries. All of the articles were published earlier in Dailies and Magazines in Bangladesh.

Book Synopsis Forty Years of Bangladesh by : Ziauddin M. Choudhury
Download or read book Forty Years of Bangladesh written by Ziauddin M. Choudhury and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2011-12-15 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of essays that were published earlier in Bangladesh Magazines and Dailies reflecting on our national achievement and failings in the past years. The articles pay homage to the millions of our people who have toiled unfalteringly to take us to the place where we are now. Some articles also reflect on the vices that affect our growth such as unbridled corruption, political violence, and lack of leadership. Some articles also are grim reminders that the path to democracy is also fettered by threats that may emanate from politics of religious bigotry and extremism that are not always open to the eyes. The founding father of Bangladesh Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had many dreams for his nation and his people. He did not live to see if his dreams of Shonar Bangla (Golden Bengal) were fulfilled and what stormy path his beloved country traveled in last forty years. His life was cut short early in a violent and cruel manneran ironic end for a man who believed in non-violence.

Download or read book Bonded Labor written by Siddharth Kara and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siddharth KaraÕs Sex Trafficking has become a critical resource for its revelations into an unconscionable business, and its detailed analysis of the tradeÕs immense economic benefits and human cost. This volume is KaraÕs second, explosive study of slavery, this time focusing on the deeply entrenched and wholly unjust system of bonded labor. Drawing on eleven years of research in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, Kara delves into an ancient and ever-evolving mode of slavery that ensnares roughly six out of every ten slaves in the world and generates profits that exceeded $17.6 billion in 2011. In addition to providing a thorough economic, historical, and legal overview of bonded labor, Kara travels to the far reaches of South Asia, from cyclone-wracked southwestern Bangladesh to the Thar desert on the India-Pakistan border, to uncover the brutish realities of such industries as hand-woven-carpet making, tea and rice farming, construction, brick manufacture, and frozen-shrimp production. He describes the violent enslavement of millions of impoverished men, women, and children who toil in the production of numerous products at minimal cost to the global market. He also follows supply chains directly to Western consumers, vividly connecting regional bonded labor practices to the appetites of the world. KaraÕs pioneering analysis encompasses human trafficking, child labor, and global security, and he concludes with specific initiatives to eliminate the system of bonded labor from South Asia once and for all.

Book Synopsis Bangladeshi Migration to Singapore by : Md Mizanur Rahman
Download or read book Bangladeshi Migration to Singapore written by Md Mizanur Rahman and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines international labour migrants in the context of South–South migration with a focus on Bangladeshi migration to Singapore. Two principal questions in the South–South migration are addressed: Why and how individuals migrate for work; and what impact this temporary form of migration has for migrants and their families. The book adopts a relatively new methodological approach to labour migration by linking different phases that migrants undergo in the migration process and by combining migrants in the host country with their families in the origin country. This is achieved through identifying and addressing six key areas: (i) migration policy, (ii) social imperatives of migration (iii) recruitment, (iv) social worlds of the migrants, (v) remittance process, and finally, (vi) family development dynamics. This book introduces the bari to migration research as a unit of analysis over and above individual and family units. The book reveals how social and cultural forces both initiate and perpetuate migration, and later on influence bari dynamics.
