Our knowledge of AGNs has been greatly advanced during the past decades thanks to the unprecedentedly powerful X-ray missions (e.g., Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift) and modern large area surveys in the optical/UV band (e.g., the Sloan Digital Sky Survey; SDSS). Studies on the relation between multiwavelength properties of AGNs can reveal the physics of AGN accretion process. In this dissertation, I mainly study the relation between the AGN X-ray properties and their optical/UV spectral properties on emission lines, absorption lines and continuum. I also investigate the X-ray properties of AGNs with extreme radio properties in the early Universe. (1) We studied the X-ray properties of a class of radio-quiet SDSS quasars with weak broad emission lines (weak-line quasars; WLQs). Although the WLQ population shows diverse X-ray properties, they have an excess of X-ray weak sources. Besides having weak emission lines, the X-ray weak WLQs generally show other unusual UV emission-line properties similar to those of the remarkable X-ray weak quasar PHL 1811 (e.g., highly blueshifted C IV lines, weak semi-forbidden lines, and strong UV Fe emission). They are classified as "PHL 1811 analogs". The X-ray weak WLQs also show a harder X-ray spectrum, while the WLQ with normal X-ray brightness have similar X-ray spectral properties to those of typical quasars. We proposed an AGN geometry which can potentially unify the X-ray weak and X-ray normal WLQ populations via orientation effect. The infrared-to-UV spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of X-ray weak and X-ray normal WLQs have consistent SEDs with those for typical quasars, which disfavors the BL Lac-like scenario for the nature of these quasars (Chapters 2 and 3). (2) We have led the best X-ray study to date on quasars with intermediate-width absorption lines (mini-BALs). We found the X-ray brightness of mini-BAL quasars are more close to those of typical quasars than to BAL quasars (which are generally X-ray weak), showing they do not have substantial X-ray absorption. Strong correlations were found between the X-ray brightness and UV absorption parameters, e.g., the absorption strength and maximum outflow velocity. We further proposed new UV absorption parameters which better correlate with the X-ray properties than existing parameters do (Chapter 4). (3) We studied the relation between the optical/UV luminosity and X-ray luminosity (quantified by the alpha_ox parameter) for the most-luminous quasars over a wide range of redshifts. Our correlation analyses provide better constraints on the alpha_ox-UV luminosity correlation. We have also verified that the alpha_ox parameter does not significantly evolve with redshift. We provide the individual and composite mid-infrared-to-UV SEDs for the most-luminous quasars. (Chapter 5). (4) We presented the X-ray and multiwavelength properties of the highly radio-loud quasars (HRLQs) at z > 4. Our HRLQs show a significant enhancement of X-ray emission over those HRLQs at lower redshift with similar optical/UV and radio luminosities, suggesting that the jet-linked X-ray emission mechanism in the early universe may differ from that in the more evolved universe. The optical/UV emission-line strength of RLQs are correlated with radio loudness, but not with relative X-ray brightness. Our HRLQs generally follow the anti-correlation between radio loudness and X-ray power-law photon index. We also studied the broad-band SEDs of HRLQs. Some HRLQs have an excess of mid-infrared emission which may originate from the jet synchrotron emission. None of our z > 4 HRLQs is detected by the Fermi LAT two-year survey (Chapter 6).

Book excerpt: Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are among the most interesting astrophysical objects in the Universe. IAU Symposium 304, dedicated to marking the centenary of B. E. Markarian's birth, addresses the most important questions in this area: understanding the possible evolutionary and/or physical connections between the different classes of AGN; the relation of AGN to their host galaxies; and understanding the true fraction of heavily obscured AGN in order to determine the true AGN luminosity function and its variation with redshift. This volume's topics include: historical spectral and colorimetric surveys, multiwavelength AGN surveys, AGN statistics, unification and other models of AGN, AGN feedback in galaxies and clusters, their host galaxies and environments, binary AGN and merging supermassive black holes, AGN variability, and future large projects. This fresh summary of AGN surveys is especially useful for researchers engaged in this exciting field and helping them plan for future surveys and observations.

The latest observations and theoretical models are combined in this clear, pedagogic textbook for advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Researchers will also find this wide-ranging and coherent review invaluable. Throughout, detailed derivations of important results are provided to ensure the book is self contained. And theories and models are critically compared with detailed and often puzzling observations from across the spectrum. We are led through all the key topics, including quasar surveys, continuum radiation, time variability, relativistic beaming, accretion disks, jet sidedness, gravitational lensing, unification and detailed, multi-wavelength studies of individual objects. Particular emphasis is placed on radio, X- and gamma-ray observations--not covered in depth in any previous book. All those entering into this exciting and dynamic area of astronomy research will find this book an ideal introduction.

Book excerpt: Although the continua of radio-loud Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) are typically dominated by synchrotron radiation over virtually the entire spectrum, it is not clear whether the radio and higher-frequency emission originate in the same or different parts of the jet. In some inhomogeneous synchrotron source models for blazars, the radio and UV-optical-IR (UVOIR) emission may be co-spatial, depending on the model parameters considered. Indeed, several different radio{u2013}optical correlations based on polarization data have been found recently, suggesting that the optical and radio polarization may be closely related, and that the corresponding emission regions may be cospatial. My joint analysis of optical and 15+22+43 GHz VLBA polarization data for a sample of about 40 AGNs shows that, after correction for the inferred VLBA core Faraday rotations, most BL Lac objects and some quasars have aligned VLBA-core and optical polarizations, although many quasars also show no obvious relationship between their VLBA-core and optical polarization angles. This apparently indicates that not all AGNs have co-spatial regions of optical and radio emission in their jets. However, another possibility was that some of the 15{u2013}43 GHz VLBA cores have Faraday rotations of the order of several tens of thousand of rad/m2, which were not properly fit using our three-frequency data due to n {u00D7} _ ambiguities in the observed polarization angles, leading to incorrect subtraction of the effects of the core Faraday rotation, and so incorrect {u2018}zero-wavelength{u2019} radio polarization angles. With this is mind, I obtained additional observations for 8 of the 40 AGN, this time at 12+15+22+24+43 GHz, chosen in such a way that we should be able to discern between various possible scenarios. My results indicate that, although some VLBI radio cores have comparatively high rotation measures, this cannot explain the misalignments found between the radio core and optical VLBI polarization angles. I performed a series of analyse to check if this could be explained by other physical processes or properties occurring in the AGN, such as degree of polarization, magnetic field intensity or presence of detectable {u2013}ray emission. No clear differences between the properties of sources with aligned and misaligned radio-core and optical polarization angles was found. The emission from AGN is mostly synchrotron in origin, making it natural that the degree of circular polarization (CP) is low, less than a percent. For this reason, the detection of CP is a non trivial task. However, using recently developed new techniques, I have performed circular polarization analysis on some of my sources. The results indicate that the degree of CP tends to increase with frequency, with the spectral index being either flat or inverted, _ _ +1, which can be explained with a Blandford-Königl jet model. Using the measured intensity, spectral indices and magnetic fields derived from the measured core shift, I have derived the degree of order of the magnetic field required to explain if this observed CP is generated by the synchrotron mechanism. The implied degrees of order of the magnetic field are too high in most cases for the CP to be synchrotron in origin, requiring a substantial (possible dominant) contribution from Faraday conversion of linear to circular polarizaton. A kilo-Parsec multiwavelength study has also been performed on the source PKS 0521{u2013}365. This AGN has been classified as a HYMOR (Hybrid morphology radio source) and has a jet which is clearly detectable over a wide frequency band, ranging from radio to X-rays. This has allowed me to perform a study of its physical properties over radio, near infra-red, optical and X-rays bands, thus obtaining valuable information about its morphology, spectral energy distribution and magnetic field. The data here supports the hypothesis that PKS0521-36 is intermediate between an FRI and FRII source, agreeing with unified scenarios in which the differences between these classes can be understood on a physical basis.

Understanding the physics of these objects therefore requires the synthesis of results from many different domains of Astronomy. It was the aim of the conference "Active Galactic Nuclei across the Electromagnetic Spectrum" to provide a forum where this exchange could take place. Some 300 astronomers participated to the conference, 250 of them presented results either as oral papers or in the form of posters. Observations in all domains of the electro magnetic spectrum in which astronomical observations can be made from the ground or from space were presented. Many theoretical contributions were also given. There has been a tremendous growth in the number and quality of Astronomical obser vations in many spectral domains over the past several years. Students of Active Galactic Nuclei have been particularly keen to make use of the available facilities (both space born and on the ground), often in a very organised way, in order to obtain repeated simultane ous data covering large bands of the spectrum. This approach has produced a qualitatively new set of data for understanding the physics of Active Galactic Nuclei. The task of the meeting was to review this data in a coherent way.

Book excerpt: The accomplishments in the following three research areas are summarized: multiwavelength study of active galactic nuclei; magnetic activity of young stellar objects; and statistical methodology for astronomical data analysis. The research is largely based on observations of the ROSAT and ASCA X-ray observatories, complemented by ground-based optical and radio studies. Major findings include: discovery of inverse Compton X-ray emission from radio galaxy lobes; creation of the largest and least biased available sample of BL Lac objects; characterization of X-ray and nonthermal radio emission from T Tauri stars; obtaining an improved census of young stars in a star forming region and modeling the star formation history and kinematics; discovery of X-ray emission from protostars; development of linear regression methods and codes for interpreting astronomical data; and organization of the first cross-disciplinary conferences for astronomers and statisticians. Book excerpt: This dissertation uses large galaxy redshift surveys and multi-wavelength imaging to place observational constraints on the evolution of galaxies and the supermassive black holes that they host since the Universe was roughly half its current age. In the first chapter, we use data from the AEGIS survey to present quantitative morphological measurements of green valley galaxies, to constrain the mechanism(s) responsible for quenching star formation in this transition population and creating elliptical galaxies. We show that green galaxies are generally massive (M.) ~ 1010·5 M/[sun]) disk galaxies with high concentrations of light. We find that major mergers are not the dominant mechanism responsible for quenching star formation, and we find that either more mild external processes or internal secular processes play a crucial role in halting star formation. In the second chapter, we use data from the PRIMUS survey to investigate Spitzer/IRAC and X-ray AGN selection techniques in order to quantify the overlap, uniqueness, contamination, and completeness of each AGN selection. For roughly similar depth IR and X-ray data, we find that ~75% of IR-selected AGN are also identified as X-ray AGN. For the deepest X-ray data, this fraction increases to ~90%, indicating that at most ~10% of IR-selected AGN may be heavily obscured. While similar overall, the IR-AGN samples preferentially contain more luminous AGN, while the X-ray AGN samples identify AGN with a wider range of accretion rates, where the host galaxy light dominates at IR wavelengths. A more complete AGN sample is created by combining both IR and X-ray selected AGN. Finally, we present a clustering study of X-ray AGN, radio AGN and IR AGN selected AGN using spectroscopic redshifts from the PRIMUS and DEEP2 redshift surveys. Using the cross-correlation of AGN with dense galaxy samples, we find differences in the clustering of AGN selected at different wavelengths. However, we find no significant differences in the clustering of each AGN sample with matched galaxy samples that have the same redshift, stellar mass, and star formation rate distributions. The differences in the clustering of AGN selected at different wavelengths can therefore be explained by the clustering differences of their host populations
