Book excerpt: Flexible and rigid pavements were constructed and tested to obtain data on pavement and soil behavior under large aircraft loadings for use in developing criteria for evaluating and designing airfield pavements subjected to multiple-wheel heavy gear loads (WMHGL). The test sections incorporated instrumentation systems designed to determine the response of the pavement structures to static, dynamic (slowly moving), and vibratory loads and to traffic by full prototype loadings of a 12-wheel assembly (one main gear of a C-5A aircraft), a twin-tandem assembly (one twin-tandem component of the Boeing 747 assembly), and a single wheel. Analysis of static load response data from the flexible pavement instrumentation program resulted in the establishment of maximum elastic deflection and vertical elastic stress versus depth curves. Comparisons showed that the same relationships were true for static and dynamic load tests, as well as for speed tests. The findings for the rigid pavement test section indicated that the Westergaard algorithm can be used for reasonable predictio of pavement response to test loadings. The data from the instrumentation program and the traffic tests were used in the analysis of the flexible and rigid pavement test sections. The analysis resulted in a modification of the basic flexible pavement CBR design method. (Author).

Download or read book Accelerated Pavement Testing to Transport Infrastructure Innovation written by Armelle Chabot and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume gathers the latest advances, innovations, and applications in the field of accelerated pavement testing (APT), presented at the 6th International Conference on Accelerated Pavement Testing, in Nantes, France, in April 2022. Discussing APT, which involves rapid testing of full-scale pavement constructions for structural deterioration, the book covers topics such as APT facilities, APT of asphalt concrete and sustainable/innovative materials, APT for airfield pavements, testing of maintenance and rehabilitation solutions, testing of smart and multi-functional pavements, data analysis and modeling, monitoring and non-destructive testing, and efficient means of calibrating/developing pavement design methods. Featuring peer-reviewed contributions by leading international researchers and engineers, the book is a timely and highly relevant resource for materials scientists and engineers interested in determining the performance of pavement structures during their service life (10+ years) in a few weeks or months.

This book was released on 1973 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instrumentation data of the multiple-wheel heavy gear load (MWHGL) tests were reduced and analyzed. By incorporating the performance of test pavements under traffic, relations between load and pavement response were established. A method was developed to compute the measured stresses and deflections of the test pavements; based on the method, the stresses and deflections can be computed for similar types of airfield pavements under different loads. Correlations were established between computed parameters and traffic performance data from the MWHGL test section as well as from many other pavement tests conducted by the Corps of Engineers. Based on the instrumentation data, the principle of superposition was found to be valid for flexible pavements. Attempts were made to reevaluate the equivalent single-wheel loads for MWHGLs by many different methods. (Author).

This book was released on 1974 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This investigation consists of full-scale testing, laboratory evaluation, and presentation of improved design criteria using membrane-enveloped fine-grained soil (MESL) within pavement layers. The research provides a description of proven materials and necessary construction techniques. Cost predictions are developed using these materials and techniques and predictions are compared with actual costs. Material characterization was performed in the laboratory and field using dynamic vibratory testing. The characteristics of materials employed in a full-scale MESL test section were used in a structural analysis of this type of load supporting media subjected to moving repetitive loadings. This analysis of stress conditions was facilitated by computer solution. Limiting criteria based on the shearing strain in the subgrade and the number of stress applications were developed as failure criteria. These criteria were formulated using performance data and model analyses. A design method using materials characterization, structural analysis, and failure criteria was presented to facilitate incorporation of a MESL technique into the design engineer's repertoire.
