Book excerpt: As science continues to advance, researchers are continually gaining new insights into the way living beings behave and function, and into the composition of the smallest molecules. Most of these biological processes have been imitated by many scientific disciplines with the purpose of trying to solve different problems, one of which is artificial intelligence. Advancing Artificial Intelligence through Biological Process Applications presents recent advances in the study of certain biological processes related to information processing that are applied to artificial intelligence. Describing the benefits of recently discovered and existing techniques to adaptive artificial intelligence and biology, this book will be a highly valued addition to libraries in the neuroscience, molecular biology, and behavioral science spheres.

Book excerpt: In this book, we introduce several sensitivity measures in educational contexts that can be used in research, education and self-evaluations. In Chapter 1 we discuss the framework of Howard Gardner‘s Multiple Intelligences theory and introduce our Multiple Intelligences Profiling Questionnaire. We present the psychometrical qualities of the instrument with empirical data sets of children, youth and adults. In Chapter 2 the Spiritual Sensitivity Scale is introduced with the theoretical framework it is connected to. The existence of spiritual intelligence has been a widely debated issue and not everybody is ready to call advanced thinking in religious or spiritual domains as intelligence. This has guided us to use the term sensitivity, which is easier to justify than intelligence in these areas of human behavior. In Chapter 3 we introduce the Environmental Sensitivity Scale, which is quite close to the possible intelligence of naturalist suggested by Gardner. In Chapter 4, Ethical Sensitivity Scale is introduced followed by Emotional Leadership Questionnaire in Chapter 5. All these scales have a solid theoretical framework and earlier empirical work to support the instrument building. Chapter 6 introduces Intercultural and Interreligious Sensitivity Scales with their theoretical frameworks and earlier empirical work. Following each chapter, we have included a ready-to-use version of the questionnaire and SPSS syntax to compute factors. A commentary by Dr. Seana Moran compliments the book and challenges the readers to further reflect the meaning of education in supporting holistic development of learners in their life-long journey. We have authored this book to contribute to this goal and hope it will be used in the hands of researchers, teachers and students in their mutual effort to grow and to learn new things in life.

Book excerpt: This new publication in the Models and Modeling in Science Education series synthesizes a wealth of international research on using multiple representations in biology education and aims for a coherent framework in using them to improve higher-order learning. Addressing a major gap in the literature, the volume proposes a theoretical model for advancing biology educators’ notions of how multiple external representations (MERs) such as analogies, metaphors and visualizations can best be harnessed for improving teaching and learning in biology at all pedagogical levels. The content tackles the conceptual and linguistic difficulties of learning biology at each level—macro, micro, sub-micro, and symbolic, illustrating how MERs can be used in teaching across these levels and in various combinations, as well as in differing contexts and topic areas. The strategies outlined will help students’ reasoning and problem-solving skills, enhance their ability to construct mental models and internal representations, and, ultimately, will assist in increasing public understanding of biology-related issues, a key goal in today’s world of pressing concerns over societal problems about food, environment, energy, and health. The book concludes by highlighting important aspects of research in biological education in the post-genomic, information age.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primer on Multiple Sclerosis, 2nd Edition is an updated reference manual for the practicing clinician. It covers the range of information needed to treat persons with MS, beginning with basic science and immunopathology, thorough differential diagnosis, symptom management and disease modifying therapies. This essential book also includes material covering new and experimental strategies as well as a review of commonly used complementary and alternative modalities that are used by persons with MS.Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is the most common demyelinating disease of the CNS and the third most common cause of disability among young adults. The complex management issues that are often present in the care of individuals with MS may demand the participation of health care professionals from a variety of disciplines, although the team is usually led by a neurologist. It is therefore essential for the neurologist to have a thorough grounding in the basic science and clinical phenomenology of MS. In this second edition of Primer on Multiple Sclerosis, the latest updates on therapeutics are provided, including new medications that have been FDA- approved since the first edition. Includes new diagnostic criteria, as well as any advances made in current diagnostic techniques, e.g. new imaging metrics. Important new information in the basic sciences and pathophysiology of MS is provided as well as newer epidemiologic studies. Treatment algorithms for common symptoms will be expanded, as well as any new guidelines for switching medications for Disease Modifying treatment "failures". The chapter on alternative and complimentary therapies discusses new research on CCSVI. The chapter on legal issues includes information on the putative effect of the Affordable Health Care Act on access to neurologic care and treatments. Finally, there is expanded discussion of progressive forms of MS both from a basic science and treatment perspective.

This book shows how the proven instructional technology known as precision teaching (PT) can facilitate progress monitoring while building K-12 students' fluency in reading, writing, math, and the content areas. Detailed instructions help general and special education teachers use PT to target specific skills at all three tiers of RTI, and incorporate it into project-based learning. Of crucial importance for RTI implementers, the book provides explicit procedures for measuring and charting learning outcomes during each PT session, and using the data to fine-tune instruction. Reproducible charts and other useful tools can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On Multiple Selves refutes the idea that a human being has a single unified self. Instead, David Lester argues, the mind is made up of multiple selves, and this is a normal psychological phenomenon. Lester expands on his earlier work on the phenomenon, illuminating how a “multiple-self theory of the mind” is critically necessary to understanding human behavior. Most of us are aware that we have multiple selves. We adopt different “façade selves” depending on whom we are with. Lester argues that contrary to the popular psychological term, “false self,” these presentations of self are all part of us, not false; they simply cover layers of identity. He asserts that at any given moment in time, one or another of our subselves is in control and determines how we think and act. Lester covers situations that may encourage the development of multiple selves, ranging from post-traumatic stress resulting from combat to bilinguals who speak two (or more) languages fluently. Lester’s views of multiple selves will resonate with readers’ individual subjective experience. On Multiple Selves is an essential read for psychologists, philosophers, and social scientists and will fascinate general readers as well.
