Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis is an unique disease with a tremendous impact on social life in countries with moderate climates. Its cause is unknown. In recent years however hopes have been raised that the disease might be fought, and possibly cured. With the disappearance of poliomyelitis as the main paralyzing disease multiple sclerosis has taken its place as the single disease that is responsible for paralyzing the young with an incurable affliction of long duration, for social disruption and for an 1 economic impact that is estimated to be higher than heart disease • A multi-national, mUlti-disciplinary approach to this extremely disabling disease is urgently needed in this phase of hopeful scientific developments. The Commission of the European Communities therefore sponsored a Con ference on Multiple Sclerosis Research in Europe on 29,30 and 31 January 1985 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, with the aim of formulating practical proposals for such cooperation in the Communities. This volume contains the papers read at that conference.

Book excerpt: Designing immunotherapeutics, drugs, and anti-inflammatory reagents has been at the forefront of autoimmune research, in particular multiple sclerosis, for over 20 years. Delivery methods that are used to modulate effective and long-lasting immune responses have been the major focus. This Special Issue focused on delivery methods to be used for vaccines, immunotherapeutic approaches, drug design, and anti-inflammatories and their outcomes in preclinical studies and clinical trials.

Book excerpt: At the annual meetings of the International Federation of Multiple Sclerosis Socie ties (IFMSS) the representatives of the national MS societies of numerous countries assemble for discussions and reports on work accomplished, under way, and to be undertaken in the future. In addition to publicity work, education, and patient ser vices, there has been an increasing interest in obtaining first hand, reliable, and re alistic information not only on the medical problems relevant to diagnosis, treat ment, and the management of MS, but also on progress in the difficult field of MS research. For this purpose the International Medical Advisory Board (IMAB) was founded. In the past years its members have organized a number of symposia in conjunc tion with the IFMSS meetings in New York, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Toronto, Am sterdam. The program of the G6ttingen symposium, relevant in its focus to the 1978 meeting of the IFMSS in Hannover, had the double purpose of bringing together scientists from many countries with active MS societies, and to inform the organi zers and members of these societies, and thereby also the MS patients, of problems and progress in a number of areas of MS research. The program was conceived as a survey of newer work undertaken in basic and experimental MS research and, on the clinical side, as a reassessment of the prerequisites in the diagnosis of MS, the value of laboratory tests, some therapeutic approaches, and organizational princi ples in the management of MS.

Book excerpt: A translational overview of neuroimmune diseases for neuroscientists and clinicians that clarifies the pathological mechanisms underlying neuroimmune diseases and builds a comprehensive bridge between the latest research findings and their clinical implications in daily practice. The material is presented in two steps. The first section comprises a review of the pathogenic actions of immune cells in brain diseases. Here the authors discuss the mechanisms through which immune cells disrupt the functions of nerve cells. The second section explores the ways in which the brain becomes dysfunctional due to impaired nerve cell function. Based on pathogenesis, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies are discussed for each clinical category. The book will be invaluable for use in clinical practice of neuroimmune diseases

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis is a chronic and often disabling disease of the nervous system, affecting about 1 million people worldwide. Even though it has been known for over a hundred years, no cause or cure has yet been discovered-but now there is hope. New therapies have been shown to slow the disease progress in some patients, and the pace of discoveries about the cellular machinery of the brain and spinal cord has accelerated. This book presents a comprehensive overview of multiple sclerosis today, as researchers seek to understand its processes, develop therapies that will slow or halt the disease and perhaps repair damage, offer relief for specific symptoms, and improve the abilities of MS patients to function in their daily lives. The panel reviews existing knowledge and identifies key research questions, focusing on: Research strategies that have the greatest potential to understand the biological mechanisms of recovery and to translate findings into specific strategies for therapy. How people adapt to MS and the research needed to improve the lives of people with MS. Management of disease symptoms (cognitive impairment, depression, spasticity, vision problems, and others). The committee also discusses ways to build and financially support the MS research enterprise, including a look at challenges inherent in designing clinical trials. This book will be important to MS researchers, research funders, health care advocates for MS research and treatment, and interested patients and their families.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is one of the main causes of disability in young adult population. The estimated burden of the disease worldwide is about three million people. The pathogenic mechanism of MS involves both auto immune and degenerative processes. These two mechanisms are thought to determine a combination of events leading to several clinical pattern of disease onset and course. Multiple Sclerosis: Bench to Bedside provides the most up-to-date and concise reviews on the critical issues of multiple sclerosis from around the world. This book is written by leaders and experts in the field of multiple sclerosis research and is divided into easy to read sections. Section I focuses on basic science aspects of Multiple Sclerosis, including potential biomarkers, molecular biology, heat shock proteins, oxidative stress, genetic and epigenetics. Section II focuses on clinical and epidemiological aspects of Multiple Sclerosis, including remyelination therapy, neuroplasticity-based technologies and interventions. This is an important reference book and a must-read for Postgraduate Medical Scholars, Basic Science Researchers and Neurologists in Clinical Practice.

Book excerpt: Multiple sclerosis has rapidly changed over the last decade into a condition necessitating a multi-disciplinary approach to both its management and understanding. This book reflects all these advances including contributions from genetics, immunology and molecular biology. The many new drugs, both approved or in advanced stages of clinical trials, which give cause for optimism for the treatment of the disease, are described. This new comprehensive work has both editors and contributors that bring together basic science researchers and clinicians from Europe and the USA. A comprehensive reference on multiple sclerosis covering diagnosis, treatment and scientific background. Coverage of emergent drugs which are not in other books, eg Antegrin, as well as current frontline drugs. International group of contributors which includes leading researchers in the field from USA, Switzerland, France, UK and Germany. Based on cutting edge research but stresses the practical issues of diagnosis and treatment needed by neurologists. Comprehensive coverage of primary treatment of the disease process itself and symptomatic therapies, sexual and bladder dysfunction and rehabilitation.
