Book excerpt: In what ways did economic considerations affect the decision by Britain and France to make their Black African colonies independent? Why were early expectations that independence would lead to rapid and sustained economic development in Africa for the most part disappointed? This title, originally published in 1986, seeks to tackle these two important and strongly debated issues. The main aim and value of the book is to take a broad view of this huge subject, pulling together material on most parts of Black Africa south of the Sahara and north of the Limpopo so that the problem can be seen as a whole. It takes account of a wide range of possible and actual factors which have influenced African economic development, weaving them into a single analysis, including the colonial inheritance, the impact of the fluctuating international economy, policies adopted by African governments and indigenous factors such as climate, drought and human resources. The book is written to be understood without difficulty by non-specialists and is intended to act as an introduction to its subject for university students.

Investors interested in Sub-Saharan Africa are more likely to commit technology and management than equity capital. Economic activity and overall economic policy may be more effective at raising the total volume of investment than special fiscal and other incentives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important contribution to the increasingly topical debate over which development strategies work best for newly industrializing countries. This new edition of a highly successful book, not previously available in paperback, offers a thorough and up-to-date assessment of development theories leading to clear policy prescriptions. There are two completely new chapters on the current debate on the East Asian Model and the different development path taken in Latin America, and on the New Comparative Political Economy. Alschuler demonstrates that a new conceptual framework, incorporating features of dependency theory and world system analysis, is needed in order to capture the complex interaction between multinationals, development strategies and class alliances and their impact on development.

Multinationals play key roles in both the new internationalisation of capital and in the new third world development strategies. In order to capture the complex interaction among multinationals, development strategies and class alliances as well as their impacts on development, Alschuler here offers a new conceptual framework which incorporates features of dependency theory and world system analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Ivory Coast was touted as an African miracle, a poster child for modernization and the ways that Western aid and multinational corporations would develop the continent. At the same time, Marxist scholars—most notably Samir Amin—described the capitalist activity in Ivory Coast as empty, unsustainable, and incapable of bringing real change to the lives of ordinary people. To some extent, Amin’s criticisms were validated when, in the 1980s, the Ivorian economy collapsed. In African Miracle, African Mirage, Abou B. Bamba incorporates economics, political science, and history to craft a bold, transnational study of the development practices and intersecting colonial cultures that continue to shape Ivory Coast today. He considers French, American, and Ivorian development discourses in examining the roles of hydroelectric projects and the sugar, coffee, and cocoa industries in the country’s boom and bust. In so doing, he brings the agency of Ivorians themselves to the fore in a way not often seen in histories of development. Ultimately, he concludes that the “maldevelopment” evident by the mid-1970s had less to do with the Ivory Coast’s “insufficiently modern” citizens than with the conflicting missions of French and American interests within the context of an ever-globalizing world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles concerning the economic development of Africa was written by a group of scholars who are experienced in African societies and are knowledgeable about African needs. This experience and knowledge allows the authors to improve the focus on subjects like productivity, rural development, and transportation along with social and political issues involved in African developmental problems. The work consists of three parts: a general introduction, a section focusing on theoretical perspectives, and a section on practical problems. Since much of the work is derived from original research, it is unique in its treatment of the subject. The work is addressed to scholars, researchers, and teachers interested in African development in the North American market and elsewhere.
