Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Second IFIP-TC6 Netw- king Conference, Networking 2002. Networking 2002 was sponsored bythe IFIP Working Groups 6.2, 6.3, and 6.8. For this reason the conference was structured into three tracks: i) Networking Technologies, Services, and Protocols, ii) Perf- mance of Computer and Communication Networks, and iii) Mobile and Wireless Communications. This year the conference received 314 submissions coming from 42 countries from all ?ve continents Africa (4), Asia (84), America (63), Europe (158), and Oc- nia (5). This represents a 50% increase in submissions over the ?rst conference, thus indicating that Networking is becoming a reference conference for wor- wide researchers in the networking community. With so manypapers to choose from, the job of the Technical Program C- mittee, to provide a conference program of the highest technical excellence, was both challenging and time consuming. From the 314 submissions, we ?nallys- ected 82 full papers for presentation during the conference technical sessions. To give young researchers and researchers from emerging countries the oppor- nityto present their work and to receive useful feedback from participants, we decided to include two poster sessions during the technical program. Thirty-one short papers were selected for presentation during the poster sessions. The conference technical program was split into three days, and included, in addition to the 82 refereed contributions, 5 invited papers from top-level rese- chers in the networking community.

Book excerpt: Here is a thorough, not-overly-complex introduction to the three technical foundations for multimedia applications across the Internet: communications (principles, technologies and networking); compressive encoding of digital media; and Internet protocol and services. All the contributing systems elements are explained through descriptive text and numerous illustrative figures; the result is a book well-suited toward non-specialists, preferably with technical background, who need well-composed tutorial introductions to the three foundation areas. The text discusses the latest advances in digital audio and video encoding, optical and wireless communications technologies, high-speed access networks, and IP-based media streaming, all crucial enablers of the multimedia Internet.

Book excerpt: Metadata standards in today’s ICT sector are proliferating at unprecedented levels, while automated information management systems collect and process exponentially increasing quantities of data. With interoperability and knowledge exchange identified as a core challenge in the sector, this book examines the role ontology engineering can play in providing solutions to the problems of information interoperability and linked data. At the same time as introducing basic concepts of ontology engineering, the book discusses methodological approaches to formal representation of data and information models, thus facilitating information interoperability between heterogeneous, complex and distributed communication systems. In doing so, the text advocates the advantages of using ontology engineering in telecommunications systems. In addition, it offers a wealth of guidance and best-practice techniques for instances in which ontology engineering is applied in cloud services, computer networks and management systems. Engineering and computer science professionals (infrastructure architects, software developers, service designers, infrastructure operators, engineers, etc.) are today confronted as never before with the challenge of convergence in software solutions and technology. This book will help them respond creatively to what is sure to be a period of rapid development.

We are currently witnessing a proliferation in mobile/wireless technologies and applications. However, these new technologies have ushered in unprecedented challenges for the research community across the range of networking, mobile computing, network security and wireless web applications, and optical network topics. ICCNMC 2005 was sponsored by the China Computer Federation, in cooperation with the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society. The objective of this conference was to address and capture highly innovative and stateof-the-art research and work in the networks and mobile computing industries. ICCNMC 2005 allowed sharing of the underlying theories and applications, and the establishment of new and long-term collaborative channels aimed at developing innovative concepts and solutions geared to future markets. The highly positive response to ICCNMC 2001 and ICCNMC 2003, held in Beijing and Shanghai, respectively, encouraged us to continue this international event. In its third year, ICCNMC 2005 continued to provide a forum for researchers, professionals, and industrial practitioners from around the world to report on new advances in computer network and mobile computing, as well as to identify issues and directions for research and development in the new era of evolving technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peer-to-peer (P2P) computing promises to o?er exciting new possibilities in d- tributed information processing and database technologies. The realization of this promise lies fundamentally in the availability of enhanced services such as structured ways for classifying and registering shared information, veri?cation and certi?cation of information, content-distributed schemes and quality of c- tent, security features, information discovery and accessibility, interoperation and composition of active information services, and ?nally market-based me- anisms to allow cooperative and non-cooperative information exchanges. The P2P paradigm lends itself to constructing large-scale complex, adaptive, - tonomous and heterogeneous database and information systems, endowed with clearly speci?ed and di?erential capabilities to negotiate, bargain, coordinate, and self-organize the information exchanges in large-scale networks. This vision will have a radical impact on the structure of complex organizations (business, scienti?c, or otherwise) and on the emergence and the formation of social c- munities, and on how the information is organized and processed. The P2P information paradigm naturally encompasses static and wireless connectivity, and static and mobile architectures. Wireless connectivity c- bined with the increasingly small and powerful mobile devices and sensors pose new challenges to as well as opportunities for the database community. Inf- mation becomes ubiquitous, highly distributed and accessible anywhere and at any time over highly dynamic, unstable networks with very severe constraints on the information management and processing capabilities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grid Resource Management: State of the Art and Future Trends presents an overview of the state of the field and describes both the real experiences and the current research available today. Grid computing is a rapidly developing and changing field, involving the shared and coordinated use of dynamic, multi-institutional resources. Grid resource management is the process of identifying requirements, matching resources to applications, allocating those resources, and scheduling and monitoring Grid resources over time in order to run Grid applications as efficiently as possible. While Grids have become almost commonplace, the use of good Grid resource management tools is far from ubiquitous because of the many open issues of the field, including the multiple layers of schedulers, the lack of control over resources, the fact that resources are shared, and that users and administrators have conflicting performance goals.
