Book Synopsis South Africa's Multilateral Diplomacy and Global Change by : Philip Nel
Download or read book South Africa's Multilateral Diplomacy and Global Change written by Philip Nel and published by Ashgate Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-apartheid South Africa's foreign policy has accepted a range of leadership responsibilities within multilateral institutions. This text assesses how, in these various leadership capacities, South Africa has been able to punch above its weight diplomatically. Pretoria's intervention or support for a particular position has sometimes been crucial in breaking a deadlock or securing the co-operation of others. South Africa has also used its profile to act as a voice for the vunerable, smaller states in world affairs. Based on their assessment of globalization as a process that holds some benefits, but also many dangers, for developing countries, both the Mandela and Mbeki persidencies have used multilateral forums to push for a greater say by developing countries in global governance. This position seems to indicate a reformist tendency in South African foreign policy. This book examines whether Pretoria's multilateral diplomacy contributes to global transformation, or whether South Africa's policies help maintain a fundamentally flawed global order.
Book Synopsis Climate Change Cooperation in Southern Africa by : Ian Rowlands
Download or read book Climate Change Cooperation in Southern Africa written by Ian Rowlands and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, published in association with the United Nations Environment Programme, examines how co-ordinated action among neighbouring countries could reduce greenhouse gas emissions in ways which are environmentally, economically and socially beneficial. A framework is presented for analyzing regional mitigation options, along with specific proposals for southern Africa, such as pooling electricity supplies, changing transport patterns and promoting new forms of energy. It shows how regional projects and policies can be developed and supported by the global community to help reduce climate change, and provides a study for decision makers, researchers and students in the areas of global climate change, international relations, energy and environmental studies and African affairs.

Book Synopsis Southern Africa in World Politics by : Janice Love
Download or read book Southern Africa in World Politics written by Janice Love and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These days, politics often seem to be local and global simultaneously, challenging people, politicians, and scholars to sort out what is domestic from what is international and how the two are related. Janice Love demonstrates the complex realities of how local and global politics are intimately interwoven, sometimes inextricably so, specifically in southern Africa. In southern Africa, like many other regions, such linkages have existed for decades, if not centuries. Yet the current era is different from previous times when human communities found themselves closely intertwined. Love examines military, political, and economic changes in recent decades. Students of international relations, comparative politics, and African studies will find the region's experience instructive in understanding larger trends in the world. Students particularly interested in Africa will gain insight not only about this region, but also its significance for the whole continent. Deliberately crosses the boundaries of domestic politics and foreign policy as well as comparative politics and international relations. By taking a globalization approach, connecting the local, regional and global, the book offers fresh insights into the dynamics of war and peace, wealth and poverty as well as local to global governance in southern Africa. Examines globalization in three arenas or domains (military, political, and economic), not only distinguishing them from each other, but also probing what has changed and what has remained the same across time.
