Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book provides a contemporary, critical and thought-provoking analysis of the internal and external threats to Western multilateral development finance in the twenty-first century. It draws on the expertise of scholars with a range of backgrounds providing a critical exploration of the neoliberal multilateral development aid. The contributions focus on how Western institutions have historically dominated development aid, and juxtapose this hegemony with the recent challenges from right-wing populist and the Beijing Consensus ideologies and practices. This book argues that the rise of right-wing populism has brought internal challenges to traditional powers within the multilateral development system. External challenges arise from the influence of China and regional development banks by providing alternatives to established Western dominated aid sources and architecture. From this vantagepoint, Rethinking Multilateralism in Foreign Aid puts forward new ideas for addressing the current global social, political and economic challenges concerning multilateral development aid. This book will be of interest to researchers, academics and students in the field of International Development and Global Governance, decision-makers at government level as well as to those working in international aid institutions, regional and bilateral aid agencies, and non-governmental organisations.

Book excerpt: In the turbulence and uncertainty of the post-Cold War world, Japan has confronted serious challenges while attempting to contribute to the international political economy. Japan, often characterized as a nation incapable of demonstrating global leadership, has stepped up its diplomatic activism with Official Development Assistance. Whereas bilateral foreign aid policy has received much attention in recent years, multilateral aid has been relatively neglected. Yet it is in international financial institutions that Japan has been forging an activist global diplomacy. Dennis Yasutomo provides the first look at Japan's emerging activism in its multilateral diplomacy. He analyzes, from a comparative perspective, Japanese policies toward three of the flagship multilateral development banks: the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Through the prism of Japan's behavior toward international organizations, developing nations, and the former Soviet Union, this study will introduce the reader to a major stepping stone in understanding Japan's twenty-first-century diplomacy.

Book Synopsis The Global Crisis in Foreign Aid by : Richard Grant
Download or read book The Global Crisis in Foreign Aid written by Richard Grant and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1998-06-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The internal destabilization of many poor countries that accompanied the end of the Cold War and the general failure of structural adjustment programs have changed the nature and allotment of foreign aid around the world. Major donors of foreign aid such as the United States, Japan, and the European Union have been shifting their geographical priorities in allocating aid, as well as their project emphasis, since the end of the Cold War. In addition, multilateral aid agencies—the World Bank, the United Nations, and the International Monetary Fund—are attempting to redress past failures of aid and revamp policies and priorities. Moreover, aid recipients in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Eastern Europe, the former Soviet republics, and Central America are establishing priorities of their own and evaluating the success and failure of past aid programs. This volume stands out in the literature on foreign aid because it includes contributions from eight policy representatives from a range of important donor and recipient countries—the United States, Japan, the Netherlands, Bolivia, Egypt, Bangladesh, El Salvador, and Poland. Timely in its assessment of the crisis and the transition in the foreign aid regime, the book provides a view from inside the policy process and imparts a researcher's perspective on the changing priorities for donors and recipients. The wide-ranging essay—most previously unpublished—aim to shed light on the changing political, economic, and regional geographies of aid at the end of the twentieth century.

Book Synopsis The United Nations and Education by : David Coleman
Download or read book The United Nations and Education written by David Coleman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-10 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The UN is often questioned about its ongoing relevance and overall effectiveness in the 21st century, particularly in its involvement with educational policy and co-operation around the globe. This ground-breaking book examines the four key agencies within the UN system that share the vital role of addressing educational futures: UNESCO, the World Bank, UNICEF and UNDP. As the core of educational multilateralism, these agencies powerfully reflect the UN's historic grounding in peace, human rights and economic development. The history of each agency's commitment to education is explored with critical detachment, with particular attention paid to the post-Cold War period, during which each agency has needed to re-think the impact of globalisation on both its modes of operation as well as the content of its education policies. Just as education policy itself has been subject to the impact of globalisation, so to has each agency had to adapt at a time when not only education but also their own mandates have been thrown open to question. This timely book will be essential reading for all those working with and for UN agencies, foreign aid workers and the development co-operation industry. At a time when education policies, budgets and strategies appear wide open to profound changes, this book will provide a much-needed roadmap to the future.

Book Synopsis Modernizing Foreign Assistance by : American Foreign Policy Council
Download or read book Modernizing Foreign Assistance written by American Foreign Policy Council and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1992-08-24 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States' foreign assistance program has become an instrument of declining efficacy in foreign policy. The ebbing of Soviet-American competition offers an occasion to restructure U.S. foreign policy objectives and modernize those instruments most likely to support the execution of new foreign policy objectives. This book sets out to identify new approaches to the management of resources in the foreign assistance program that would permit the flexible manipulation of these resources to cope with the fast-breaking pace of international affairs. This work challenges the generally accepted view of contemporary political realities by explicating the historical roots of the current foreign assistance program and identifying a new approach to foreign assistance through changes in resource management statutory authorities and procedures. It will be of interest to professionals and scholars in foreign affairs, foreign policy, and international relations.
Download or read book China’s Foreign Aid written by Hong Zhou and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the changes in and development of China’s Foreign Aid Policy and Mechanisms over the past 60 years. It offers readers a thorough introduction to China’s Aid to Africa; its Aid to Southeast Asian Countries; its Aid Policy Toward Central Asian Countries; and its Aid to Latin America and the Caribbean Region, as well as their respective influence. Combining field research and surveys at the grass-roots level, the book argues that China’s foreign aid policy is intended to help other countries and has changed the strategic pattern of Western countries imposing blockades on New China, and has thus played a key role in expanding and strengthening China’s economic and political ties with many developing countries, restoring its legitimate seat in the United Nations and promoting the cause of cooperation with regard to international development. Focusing on concrete examples rather than abstruse theories, the book further argues that foreign aid requires practical policies, suitable expertise and technologies; at the same time, international development – a field largely overlooked by scholars of international relations – can offer profound principles to shape international relations and foreign aid.
