Book Synopsis Sol-Gel Processing and Applications by : Y.A. Attia
Download or read book Sol-Gel Processing and Applications written by Y.A. Attia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During my professional career, I developed a strong interest in sol-gel technology, and worked on both xerogel and aerogel systems. My fascination with aerogels has driven me to explore their commercial potential, which is currently an important component of my company's business plan. Together with my co-workers, I have also worked on the preparation of controlled PZT and silica xerogels as well as thin film coatings of metals by the sol-gel technology, These experiences convinced me of the tremendous potentials of this technology. A conviction that is shared by many scientists, engineers, and business leaders around the globe. Many sol-gel derived products are already articles of commerce. However, to expand the commercial potential of sol-gel technology, two challenges must be met: (1) the quality of sol-gel derived products must continue to meet or exceed the quality of competing products, (2) the production cost of sol-gel products (specially aerogels) must continued to decline. A key to lowering the costs of sol-gel products is finding inexpensive precursors.
Book Synopsis Metallic Materials with High Structural Efficiency by : Oleg N. Senkov
Download or read book Metallic Materials with High Structural Efficiency written by Oleg N. Senkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-04-11 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1998, Prof. Sergey Firstov invited me to the Frantcevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science (IPMS) in Kyiv, Ukraine to discuss possible collaborations in the area of advanced metals research. During this visit, a strong mutual interest was evident in a broad range of structural metals technologies, and a quick friendship was established. Countless subsequent emails and a reciprocal visit to the U. S Air Force Research Laboratory by Prof. Firstov and a team of scientists from IPMS ensued to discuss and detail a broad collaboration in the area of structural metals. Two years after the initial visit, a major investment by the U. S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) was established to pursue the technologies defined by these interactions. The annual reviews of the AFOSR Ukrainian Metals Initiative were held in late May, a most beautiful time in Kyiv when the lilacs are in bright display and the air is scented with the smell of falling blossoms from the chestnut trees that line the major streets and many parks. The sunny days and mild evenings provide a welcome break from winter, and on weekend evenings festive crowds spill onto the Khreshchatyk, Kyiv’s downtown boulevard, to listen to street musicians, watch jugglers and comedians, or simply to celebrate with friends. The annual reviews featured long days of intensive discussion of technical progress, followed in the evenings by the warm hospitality of the Ukrainian hosts.
Download or read book Mechanical Alloying written by Li Lü and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanical alloying (or mechanical milling) was invented in the 1970's as a method to develop dispersion-strengthened high temperature alloys with unique properties. With the discovery of formation of amorphous alloys using this technique, it has received new research interest in developing different material systems. Potential applications of this technique have been demonstrated in different areas of materials research. This book is intended as an introduction to mechanical alloying technique used in difference areas. This book contains basic information on the preparation of materials using the mechanical alloying technique. It is useful not only to undergraduate and post-graduate students, but also to scientists and engineers who wish to gain some understanding on the basic process and mechanisms of the process. The book begins with a brief introduction to provide a historical background understanding to the development of the mechanical alloying process. The experimental set-up in the alloying process is important. Currently there are different types of ball mills available. Some of them are specially designed for mechanical alloying process. Since the resultant materials are milling intensity and milling temperature dependent, ball mills should be carefully selected in order to obtain the desired materials and structures. This is discussed in chapter 2. The actual mechanical alloying process is being considered in Chapter 3. As it is essential to understand the use of processing control agents, the physical properties of some commonly used processing control agents are listed.
