Book excerpt: The demand to exchange digital information using wireless communication system is growing fast nowadays. When there are independent mobiles users participating in sharing resources or interacting with each other, like wireless video sharing and interactive games, and no centralized connectivity is used, the application can be treated as the application of Mobile Ad Hoc Network. Two multicast routing protocols for Mobile Ad Hoc Networks (MANET) were proposed. The multicast routing protocol without Quality-of-Service (QoS) support aimed at improving packet delivery ratio. Data delivery tree was built on top of the mesh structure. The mesh structure was updated when there was no data delivery tree to cover all receivers. The branch of the tree was selected based on the link stability prediction. To do so, Packet Delivery Prediction (PDP) was introduced. Models like battery model and route selection model were used at every node in the system to predict the stability of the node/link and make date delivery decision according to the scheme defined. The multicast routing protocol with QoS support aimed at providing Quality of Service to real-time applications. Bandwidth and delay were the two major considerations for the proposed QoS-enabled protocol. The nodes in the system monitored the bandwidth consumption of itself as well as the neighboring nodes. Real-time traffic flow was admitted or rejected at the source based on the bandwidth availability feedback of the intermediate nodes. For admitted real-time traffic flow, the resource was set aside for a specific period of time, which was designed to take into account the mobility and packet inter-arrival delay requirement. Simulation showed the QoS-disabled as well as QoS-enabled multicast routing protocol can achieve their major design goal. The QoS-enabled routing protocol can admit or reject real-time traffic flow according to available bandwidth at the nodes. Real-time traffic was better served using QoS-enabled multi.

Book excerpt: The main assumption of ad hoc routing protocols is that all participating nodes do so in good faith without disrupting the operation of the protocol. However due to the absence of properly protected media and well trusted infrastructures, and the reliance on unknown third parties for data forwarding, MANETs are intrinsically vulnerable to various attacks which can compromise the confidentiality, integrity and authenticity of the exchanged information. The security issue of MANETs is even more challenging because of the involvement of multiple senders and multiple receivers. Achieving trustworthy and secure and reliable communication is a major technical challenge in MANETs.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) have gained significant interest and popularity since they have enormous potential in several fields of applications. Infrastructure-free, self-configuring and mobility are the main reasons behind this popularity. As the necessity of the group-oriented applications over MANET increases, Quality of Service (QoS) support is getting attention as one of the critical issues. Multicast communication is the ideal communication technique for supporting these types of applications. However, QoS multicast routing in large-scale networks faces several difficulties and challenges that need to be addressed. These challenges include dynamic MANET topology, multicast packet forwarding and shared wireless medium. Thus, it is necessary to design an efficient multicast routing protocol to support multimedia multicast applications in large networks with large group sizes. In this research, the problem of scalability of multicast routing protocols to support QoS over MANETs is investigated. In particular, a new Scalable QOS Multicast Routing Protocol (SQMRP) has been developed. The main objective of this protocol is to design a lightweight scalable QoS multicast routing scheme irrespective of the number of multicast members and network size. This is achieved by applying the following strategies: First, designing a novel and scalable virtual architecture that takes advantage of the geometric information of the mobile nodes, which provides efficient cluster management to handle dynamic movement of mobile nodes. Second, developing a new location service algorithm which reduces redundant propagation of packets between clusters. Third, proposing a simple and efficient hierarchical structure to manage the multicast members to further enhance the scalability. And finally, setting up a multicast forwarding tree through developing a route discovery algorithm guided by the geographic information which incurs lower overhead. The performance of the proposed protocol is evaluated through developing both an analytical investigation and extensive simulation using the GloMoSim simulator environment. The obtained results are compared with the well-known multicast protocol On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP). It has been found that the proposed virtual construction can scale to large MANETs and effectively reduces the communication overhead for location service and multicast routing discovery. The simulation results showed that, the average PDR of SQMRP is higher by 7.9% and the NPO is reduced by an average of 57.7% compared to ODMRP considering different network sizes. Also, PDR is improved by 8.3% and the NPO is reduced by 55.6% for different multicast group sizes. In fact, it is observed that SQMRP out performs ODMRP protocol in most of the studied metrics and scenarios.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overview and Goals Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The past few years have experienced a steep growth in research in the area of wireless ad hoc networks. The attractiveness of ad hoc networks, in general, is attributed to their characteristics/features such as ability for infrastructure-less setup, minimal or no reliance on network planning and the ability of the nodes to self-organize and self-configure without the involvement of a centralized n- work manager, router, access point or a switch. These features help to set up a network fast in situations where there is no existing network setup or in times when setting up a fixed infrastructure network is considered infeasible, for example, in times of emergency or during relief operations. Even though ad hoc networks have emerged to be attractive and they hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. Some of the well-known challenges are attributed to issues relating to scalability, quality-of-service, energy efficiency and security.

Book excerpt: In general, routing protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks (MANETs) can be classified into topology-based protocols and position-based protocols. While for unicast routing many proposals for both classes exist, the existing approaches to multicast routing basically implement topology-based algorithms and only a few of them make use of the geographic positions of the network nodes. These have in common that the sending node has to precalculate the multicast tree over which the packets are distributed and store it in each packet header. This involves two main issues: (a) These approaches are not very flexible with regard to topological changes which abandons the advantages that position-based routing has against topology-based routing, and (b) they do not scale with the number of receivers, since every one of them has to be named in the packet header. This thesis solves these issues and further advances position-based multicast routing. Position-Based Multicast (PBM) enhances the flexibility of position-based multicast routing by following the forwarding principle of position-based unicast routing. It transfers the choice of the next hops in the tree from the sender to the forwarding nodes. Based on the positions of their neighboring nodes, these are able to determine the most suitable next hop(s) at the moment when the packet is being forwarded. The scalability with respect to the number of receiving nodes in a group is solved by Scalable Position-Based Multicast (SPBM). It includes a membership management fulfilling different tasks at once. First, it administers group memberships in order to provide multicast sources with information on whether nodes are subscribed to a specific group. Second, it implements a location service providing the multicast sources with the positions of the subscribed receiver nodes. And third, it geographically aggregates membership data in order to achieve the desired scalability. The group management features two modes of operation: The pr.
