Book excerpt: This study introduces simplified neutrosophic linguistic numbers (SNLNs) to describe online consumer reviews in an appropriate manner. Considering the defects of studies on SNLNs in handling linguistic information, the cloud model is used to convert linguistic terms in SNLNs to three numerical characteristics. Then, a novel simplified neutrosophic cloud (SNC) concept is presented, and its operations and distance are defined. Next, a series of simplified neutrosophic cloud aggregation operators are investigated, including the simplified neutrosophic clouds Maclaurin symmetric mean (SNCMSM) operator, weighted SNCMSM operator, and generalized weighted SNCMSM operator. Subsequently, a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model is constructed based on the proposed aggregation operators. Finally, a hotel selection problem is presented to verify the effectiveness and validity of our developed approach.

Book excerpt: Optimization is considered as a decision-making process for getting the most out of available resources for the best attainable results. Many real-world problems are multi-objective or multi-attribute problems that naturally involve several competing objectives that need to be optimized simultaneously, while respecting some constraints or involving selection among feasible discrete alternatives. In this Reprint of the Special Issue, 19 research papers co-authored by 88 researchers from 14 different countries explore aspects of multi-objective or multi-attribute modeling and optimization in crisp or uncertain environments by suggesting multiple-attribute decision-making (MADM) and multi-objective decision-making (MODM) approaches. The papers elaborate upon the approaches of state-of-the-art case studies in selected areas of applications related to sustainable development decision aiding in engineering and management, including construction, transportation, infrastructure development, production, and organization management.

In the construction of subways, an appropriate scheme is helpful to save cost and ensure the quality of the project. This paper attaches great importance to present a multi-criteria group decision-making (MCGDM) method to deal with selecting an appropriate construction scheme for subways. The process of selecting an appropriate construction scheme for subways is complex because it includes a great deal of fuzzy and uncertain information which can be presented by multi-valued neutrosophic numbers (MVNNs). In addition, in order to handle the interaction of inputs, an improved generalized multi-valued neutrosophic weighted Heronian mean (IGMVNWHM) operator is introduced. Subsequently, a new distance measure between two MVNNs is defined for deriving the objective criteria weights.

Book excerpt: Renewable energy selection, which is a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problem, is crucial for the sustainable development of economy. Criteria are interdependent in the selection problem of renewable energy. Moreover, fuzzy and uncertain information exist during the selection processes, and information can be comprehensively reflected by interval-valued neutrosophic sets. This chapter aims to construct selection approaches for renewable energy considering the interrelationships among criteria.

Book excerpt: Neutrosophic theory and applications have been expanding in all directions at an astonishing rate especially after the introduction the journal entitled “Neutrosophic Sets and Systems”. New theories, techniques, algorithms have been rapidly developed. One of the most striking trends in the neutrosophic theory is the hybridization of neutrosophic set with other potential sets such as rough set, bipolar set, soft set, hesitant fuzzy set, etc. The different hybrid structure such as rough neutrosophic set, single valued neutrosophic rough set, bipolar neutrosophic set, single valued neutrosophic hesitant fuzzy set, etc. are proposed in the literature in a short period of time. Neutrosophic set has been a very important tool in all various areas of data mining, decision making, e-learning, engineering, medicine, social science, and some more. The book “New Trends in Neutrosophic Theories and Applications” focuses on theories, methods, algorithms for decision making and also applications involving neutrosophic information. Some topics deal with data mining, decision making, e-learning, graph theory, medical diagnosis, probability theory, topology, and some more. 30 papers by 39 authors and coauthors.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this paper is to provide a method of multi-criteria decision-making that combines simplified neutrosophic linguistic sets and normalized Bonferroni mean operator to address the situations where the criterion values take the form of simplified neutrosophic linguistic numbers and the criterion weights are known. Firstly, the new operations and comparison method for simplified neutrosophic linguistic numbers are defined and some linguistic scale functions are employed. Subsequently, a Bonferroni mean operator and a normalized weighted Bonferroni mean operator of simplified neutrosophic linguistic numbers are developed, in which some desirable characteristics and special cases with respect to the parameters p and q in Bonferroni mean operator are studied.

Book excerpt: Employing the concept and function of tangency with similarity measures and counterpart distances for reliable medical consultations has been extensively studied in the past decades and results in lots of isomorphic measures for application. We compared the majority of such isomorphic measures proposed by various researchers and classified them into (a) maximum norm and (b) one-norm categories. Moreover, we found that previous researchers used monotonic functions to transform an identity function and resulted in complicated expressions. In this study, we provide a theoretical foundation to explain the isomorphic nature of a newer measure proposed by the following research paper against its studied existing one in deriving the same pattern recognition results. Specifically, this study initially proposes two similarity measures using maximum norm, arithmetic mean, and aggregation operators and followed by a detailed discussion on their mathematical characteristics. Subsequently, a simplified version of such measures is presented for easy application. This study completely covers two previous methods to point out that the complex approaches used were unnecessary. The findings will help physicians, patients, and their family members to obtain a proper medical diagnosis during multiple examinations.

Book excerpt: Multiple-criteria decision-making (MCDM) problems are the imperative part of modern decision theory where a set of alternatives has to be assessed against the multiple influential attributes before the best alternative is selected. In a decision-making(DM) process, an important problem is how to express the preference value. Due to the increasing complexity of the socioeconomic environment and the lack of knowledge or the data about the DM problems, it is difficult for the decision maker to give the exact decision as there is always an imprecise, vague or uncertain information.

Neutrosophic theory has been developed in twenty first century and not much of arithmetic has been developed for this set.
