HIV/AIDS can manifest a variety of skin lesions due to immunological disorder, opportunistic infections and tumors always occur primarily with skin lesions. The cases included in this book reflect the diseases spectrum and evolution of mucocutaneous lesions at different stages before and after AIDS antiretroviral therapy (ART) as well. This book consists of nine chapters, including fungal, viral, bacterial, parasitic, neoplastic, inflammatory diseases, syphilis and ART-induced diseases, etc. More than 300 cases and 600 photos of representative and important clinical significances are selected, showing the different clinical characteristics of the same disease under different immune status. Clinical photos are combined with clear and concise medical history along with the discussion on it, by which the readers can understand why skin lesions can be used as the early diagnostic clues to HIV/AIDS infection. Moreover, every chapter summarizes the similarity and characteristics of each type of skin diseases, which outlines and explains why they are AIDS-related mucocutaneous lesions.

Skin being the largest organ of the body and with mucous membranes, it is the main portal of HIV infection. There is a lot of scope for research in the field of HIV and AIDS, and there is a need for an updated literature that would throw a light on the efficient diagnosis and management of cutaneous manifestations in HIV disease. Hence we are bringing out this eBook which is a comprehensive literature on HIV and its various cutaneous manifestations in its entirety. In this eBook we have provided extensive data and information on various skin related infections, papulosquamous disorders, disorders of vasculature, pruritic papular eruptions, neoplasias, adverse drug reactions and other hair, nail, oral and ocular associated disorders in HIV. The work has been sufficiently researched and contributed by experts in this field. Clinical photographs and extensive scientific literature will enhance the knowledge and confidence of the readers particularly clinicians and postgraduates to efficiently diagnose and manage cutaneous diseases in HIV infected patients. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cutaneous manifestations are common in patients with HIV infection and mainly due to the immunodeficiency. In the initial stage of HIV infection, we frequently observe a rash of macular lesions. During the asymptomatic phase, the patients may typically show the following skin diseases: seborrhoic dermatitis, acneiform folliculitis, persistent herpes simplex, and infections with the human papilloma virus. In ARC and AIDS patients, 3 groups of skin disorders are found: cutaneous infections, skin tumors, and other mixed skin diseases. Herpes simplex and herpes zoster may develop into ulcerating and necrotising forms especially in patients with advanced immunodeficiency. The most frequent skin tumors in AIDS patients are the disseminated Kaposi's sarcoma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. More than 50% of the AIDS patients treated with trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole developed a severe drug eruption. African and Caribbean patients with AIDS frequently suffer from pruritic skin lesions, the pathogenesis of which is not known. Aside from these cutaneous manifestations, a variety of other skin disorders have been reported in patients with HIV infection, ARC, or AIDS; future research will furnish definite proof whether they are correlated with HIV infection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly all patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) will develop cutaneous or mucous membrane manifestations. Oral cavity lesions associated with HIV disease include candidiasis, hairy leukoplakia and Kaposi's sarcoma. Skin infections such as herpes simplex, herpes zoster, molluscum contagiosum, Staphylococcus aureus folliculitis and warts are often more severe than usual and may be refractory to therapy. Seborrheic dermatitis is the most common cutaneous eruption. The appearance of Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient younger than 60 years of age or in any individual with laboratory evidence of HIV infection is diagnostic of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. Serious drug reactions may occur, despite the depressed cellular immunity associated with HIV infection.

Book excerpt: Since the first case of HIV was diagnosed in 1981, several efforts have gone into its prevention and control. However, it remains a leading scourge today, with no cure despite the international attention and publicity it receives. It is one of the few diseases specifically given attention in the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). There has been inadequate effort by academia in developing countries towards contributing to in-depth knowledge of HIV, as well as stimulating the interest of students in the topic. As the search for a cure continues, this book is timely, discussing the changing epidemiology of HIV. The contributors are not only academicians, but also seasoned programmers who are working in the realm of HIV care.
