Book excerpt: Volume 2, Bringing Order to Chaos: Combined Arms Maneuver in Large Scale Combat Operations, opens a dialogue with the Army. Are we ready for the significantly increased casualties inherent to intensive combat between large formations, the constant paralyzing stress of continual contact with a peer enemy, and the difficult nature of command and control while attempting division and corps combined arms maneuver to destroy that enemy? The chapters in this volume answer these questions for combat operations while spanning military history from 1917 through 2003. These accounts tell the challenges of intense combat, the drain of heavy casualties, the difficulty of commanding and controlling huge formations in contact, the effective use of direct and indirect fires, the need for high quality leadership, thoughtful application of sound doctrine, and logistical sustainment up to the task. No large scale combat engagement, battle, or campaign of the last one hundred years has been successful without being better than the enemy in these critical capabilities. What can we learn from the past to help us make the transition to ready to fight tonight?

Book excerpt: From their founding, the Massachusetts communities of Leominster and Fitchburg have shared the same river. More than that, they have long shared a special football competition that has sometimes spilled beyond the field. Author and historian Mark Bodanza captures the human drama of one of the nation's oldest football rivalries; the high schools of Leominster and Fitchburg have met on the gridiron for 114 years. Compiled from newspaper articles, school yearbooks, game programs, eyewitness accounts, letters, photos, and archival records, he not only chronicles the development of football from its earliest days, but also tells the story of two communities that saw, in football, a way to grasp civic pride.

Download or read book Leominster written by Thomas K. Hazzard and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 1999-06 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally a part of Lancaster, Leominster's first house was built in 1725 by Gershom Houghton. By the mid-1800s Leominster had become an industrial center. The comb-making industry, begun in Obadiah Hills' kitchen in 1775, dominated 18th-century work life. By the time Leominster became a city in 1915, visionaries like Bernard Doyle and Samuel Foster were developing tools and techniques that would revolutionize the plastics industry, which commanded the 20th century. Leominster is known today as the Pioneer Plastic City, and the plastic industry still provides the foundation of the city's economy. Leominster, the first comprehensive town history in over 100 years, shows the evolution of the town from the late 19th century to the present by contrasting historic photographs and illustrations with contemporary photographs. Within these pages, we meet local characters like Buckskin Sam, noted fivecent-and-dime novelist; Joseph Palmer, the man persecuted for wearing a beard; and John Chapman, better known as Johnny Appleseed. On this visual tour, we also visit a variety of the town's residents, viewing scenes that illustrate their daily lives as well as their trials and triumphs.
