Book excerpt: A librarian who just came into money dies in a New York hotel room, and justice is overdue: “Full of fun and delightful people. A really terrific plot” (Chicago Daily News). With a seven-hundred-dollar inheritance in her pocket, small town librarian Harriet Bascom went to the track. By the time she left she had thousands—enough to live life the way she had always wanted: with champagne, music, and love. The champagne and music flow freely once she arrives in New York City, but it’s love that brings trouble. When she discovers her beloved has a terrible secret, she makes the mistake of being alone when she confronts him about it—and doesn’t even scream when she dies. Harriet is one of the three thousand women who disappear in New York each year—the women Hildegarde Withers wants to know more about. Unhappily retired, this former elementary school teacher is hungry for action. Investigating Harriet’s case—and the three other ladies who follow her into death—will provide all the action Miss Withers could ever want. Four Lost Ladies is part of the Hildegarde Withers Mysteries series, which also includes The Penguin Pool Murder and Murder on the Blackboard.

Book excerpt: Kinsman Township is part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. It is more reflective of this connection than many communities because John Kinsman, one of 35 men who formed the Connecticut Land Company in 1795 to purchase the land and have it surveyed into five-mile-square townships, actually made this his home and encouraged his Connecticut neighbors to do likewise. Kinsman first saw his land in 1799, traveling via horseback with his brother-in-law Simon Perkins, an agent for the land company who would become the most prominent settler of nearby Warren. Their small entourage entered the area that would become Kinsman and built a cabin near the southeast corner of the current square. The Lakeshore and Southern Michigan Railway came through the area in 1873, leading to a flurry of entrepreneurial activity. A fire dramatically altered the face of the original square, but many new fashionable homes rose out of the ashes. The Kinsman Fair also became a major event in the area, drawing thousands to its commodious facilities. This book commemorates the rich history of Kinsman through vintage photographs.

Download or read book Between the Pews written by Sylvia Edmondson-Holt and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an invigorating story. The author tells about growing up peacefully in a small Southern community during the Civil Rights Movement. Her childhood was protected from much of the Jim Crow, racism, and unrest experienced in the segregated South during that time. Founded by former slaves and colored Civil War veterans, these landowners created a safe haven, a thriving village for its African American residents. This environment hardly prepared her for what life was like outside this protective shield that she had become accustomed to. She tells a moving, thrilling, and often touching story of how she dealt with life beyond this place. She exhibited great determination to rise above the many issues she faced while dealing with marriage, raising her children, and a struggle to grow up herself. Her children, being her most important spectators, watched as she tried to teach them by setting good examples.
Book Synopsis Children Reading Pictures by : Evelyn Arizpe
Download or read book Children Reading Pictures written by Evelyn Arizpe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fascinating results of a two year study of children's responses to contemporary picturebooks. Children of primary school age, from a range of backgrounds, read and discussed books by the award-winning artists, Anthony Browne and Satoshi Kitamura. They then made their own drawings in response to the books. The authors found that children are sophisticated readers of visual texts, and are able to make sense of complex images on literal, visual and metaphorical levels. They are able to understand different viewpoints, analyse moods, messages and emotions, and articulate personal responses to picturebooks - even when they struggle with the written word. With colour illustrations, and interviews with the two authors whose books were included in the study, this book demonstrates how important visual literacy is to children's understanding and development. Primary and Early Years teachers, literacy co-ordinators and all those interested in children's literature will find this a captivating read.
