Book Synopsis Yankee Samurai by : Joseph Daniel Harrington
Download or read book Yankee Samurai written by Joseph Daniel Harrington and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author Joseph D. Harrington has written an informative and insightful history of the Nisei (Second-generation Japanese Americans), working for the U.S. armed forces in the Pacific during World War II. This is no whitewashed narrative, as it exposes U.S. internment camps, prejudices, and the frustrations of patriotic Japanese-Americans who wanted to fight for their country, but were initially rebuffed. As the book relates, not all Nisei were in favor of fighting, and even those that did encountered another kind of prejudice at first, from Hawaiian-born Nisei who more than occasionally felt that continental Japanese-Americans just didn't measure up, linguistically-speaking. Like other children of immigrants, the Nisei were, to a large extent, caught between Japanese tradition and U.S. culture. The concept of honor, an essential element in Japanese-American family life, ended up serving U.S. military interests well. The author has done an outstanding job of uncovering names and telling little-known stories. Especially fascinating are the ones that describe the analytical acumen of Nisei translators.

Download or read book Lost Battalions written by Franz Steidl and published by Presidio Press. This book was released on 2008-12-30 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The remarkable story of two battalions, one German, one American, cut off in the same forest at the same time, and the heroic efforts to save them. The 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry ("Alamo Regiment"), had been cut off for six days and food, water, and ammunition were running out. Sent to rescue the "Texans" were the Japanese American Nisei of the famed "Go For Broke" 100/442d Regimental Combat Team. At virtually the same time, only five miles away, a similar drama unfolded as the Wehrmacht's 201st Mountain Battalion attempted an equally desperate rescue of its sister unit, the 202d Mountain Battalion. The weather was abysmal, the terrain virtually impassable. Some generals lost their sons there, other generals lost only their honor. Told by the soldiers, American and German, from both sides, Lost Battalions is an unforgettable account of courage, honor, and humanity.

Book Synopsis A Principled Stand by : Gordon K. Hirabayashi
Download or read book A Principled Stand written by Gordon K. Hirabayashi and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2013-06-30 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1943, University of Washington student Gordon Hirabayashi defied the curfew and mass removal of Japanese Americans on the West Coast, and was subsequently convicted and imprisoned as a result. In A Principled Stand, Gordon's brother James and nephew Lane have brought together his prison diaries and voluminous wartime correspondence to tell the story of Hirabayashi v. United States, the Supreme Court case that in 1943 upheld and on appeal in 1987 vacated his conviction. For the first time, the events of the case are told in Gordon's own words. The result is a compelling and intimate story that reveals what motivated him, how he endured, and how his ideals changed and deepened as he fought discrimination and defended his beliefs. A Principled Stand adds valuable context to the body of work by legal scholars and historians on the seminal Hirabayashi case. This engaging memoir combines Gordon's accounts with family photographs and archival documents as it takes readers through the series of imprisonments and court battles Gordon endured. Details such as Gordon's profound religious faith, his roots in student movements of the day, his encounters with inmates in jail, and his daily experiences during imprisonment give texture to his storied life.
