Book excerpt: E. F. Benson, best known for his irresistible Mapp and Lucia novels set in the fictional town of Tilling, England, was a prolific and beloved novelist. Though the Mapp and Lucia books remain popular to this day, this kindred book will be back in print for the first time since its initial publication. The son of E. W. Benson, archbishop of Canterbury from 1883 to 1896, the young E. F. Benson was educated at Marlborough School and at King's College, Cambridge. After graduation he worked in Athens for the British School of Archaeology from 1892 to 1895, and later in Egypt for the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies. In 1893 he published Dodo, a novel that attracted wide attention. It was followed by a number of other successful novels, including his hugely popular Mapp and Lucia series. In 1938 he was made an honorary fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge. He died in February 1940. Praise for Mrs. Ames: "An extraordinary study in comedy and quite the best thing artistically that Mr. Benson has done."-New York Times

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Ames Certainly the breakfast tongue, which was cut for the first time that morning, was not of the pleasant reddish hue which Mrs. Altham was justified in expecting, considering that the delicacy in question was not an ordinary tinned tongue (you had to take things as you found them, if your false sense of economy led you to order tinned goods) but one that came out of a fine glass receptacle with an eminent label on it. It was more of the colour of cold mutton, unattractive if not absolutely unpleasant to the eye, while to the palate it proved to be singularly lacking in flavour. Altogether it was a great disappointment, and for this reason, when Mr. Altham set out at a quarter-past twelve to stroll along to the local club in Queensgate Street with the ostensible purpose of seeing if there was any fresh telegram about the disturbances in Morocco, his wife accompanied him to the door of that desirable mansion, round which was grouped a variety of chained-up dogs in various states of boredom and irritation, and went on into the High Street in order to make in person a justifiable complaint at her grocer's. She would be sorry to have to take her custom elsewhere, but if Mr. Pritchard did not see his way to sending her another tongue (of course without further charge) she would be obliged... Book excerpt: Edward Frederic Benson (24 July 1867 - 29 February 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer. Benson's first book published was Sketches From Marlborough. He started his novel writing career with the (then) fashionably controversial Dodo (1893), which was an instant success, and followed it with a variety of satire and romantic and supernatural melodrama. He repeated the success of Dodo, which featured a scathing description of composer and militant suffragette Ethel Smyth (which she "gleefully acknowledged", according to actress Prunella Scales), with the same cast of characters a generation later: Dodo the Second (1914), "a unique chronicle of the pre-1914 Bright Young Things" and Dodo Wonders (1921), "a first-hand social history of the Great War in Mayfair and the Shires".

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mrs. Arthur, Vol. 1 of 3 The door was so near the sitting-room that every demand made there was easily heard, and even answered from within; and, indeed, Mrs. Bates was in the habit Of calling out an answer when it happened to be beyond the powers Of the daughter or small servant who Opened. But this ques tion was one about which there was no difficulty. It was followed by a hearty laugh from the assembled family. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Alonzo Ames Miner The life of Dr. Miner, as described in these pages, is commended, first of all, to believers in the Universalist interpretation of the Christian religion: it may revive for the older, precious memories; it is hoped that it will be instructive to the younger, and incite them to emulate the noble example which even an imperfect description could not wholly obscure. The biography is commended to all who love their fellow men, and have hearts to feel for, and hands to help, their less fortunate brethren. Dr. Miner, intensely devoted to the denomination into which he may be said to have been born, never thought of sectarian limits when there was an opportunity to help the needy, to rescue the fallen, to encourage and cheer those who were walking in ways of wisdom and righteous purpose. As these pages have multiplied upon the author's hands, it has at times seemed as if the great man whom they seek to portray was in his presence, - as if the familiar accents were again heard. Whatever may prove to be failure in the preparing of this history, the charge can never rest against the biographer that he has had "no feeling of his business." The very arduous task has, at every stage, been a labor of love. It would have been childish, inexcusable modesty to suppress any useful particular because it had some personal relation to the author. An intimate acquaintance and friendship covering more than half a century must embrace many things known only to the author. It is, however, hoped that in no instance has the biography become autobiographical. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
