Book excerpt: When framers of the American Constitution debated the document (and form of government) in 1787, they chose not to adopt the British system as they knew its flaws. In 230 years, USA has grown beyond what the framers could have envisioned, but the Constitution has endured. The American President has far less powers than the British PM. British PM William Evert Gladstone had said: “Nowhere is there a man who has so much power with so little to show for it in the way of formal title or prerogative.” British historian Sir Sidney JM Low wrote in 1904: “An English Prime Minister, with his majority secure in parliament, can do what the German Emperor, the American President, and all the Chairmen of all the Committees of the United States’ Congress, cannot do (together).” India was already the world’s largest democracy on August 15, 1947, but, for almost 2½ years, we followed the British Constitution. The 6-member Constitution Drafting Committee, with Dr. B.R. Ambedkar as Chairman, prepared a draft Constitution. This was debated and 2000+ amendments were moved over two years. On November 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly adopted the Constitution. The committee had several choices in which model to follow. In 1947, USA’s population was about 44% of India, but we still chose to adopt a system from a country which was just 15% our size. ALL BECAUSE OF ONE MAN WHO HAD VERY CAREFULLY READ SIR LOW’S WORDS AND WANTED THAT ABSOLUTE POWER FOR HIMSELF. Has the parliamentary form of government worked for us over the past 68 years?

Download or read book Harold Wilson written by Andrew S. Crines and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2016-03-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This year marks the centenary of Harold Wilson's birth, the fiftieth anniversary of his most impressive general election victory and forty years since his dramatic resignation as Prime Minister. He was one of the longest-serving premiers of the twentieth century, having won a staggering four general elections, yet, despite this monumental record, his place in Labour's history remains somewhat ambiguous. By the end of his two periods in power, both the left and right of the party were highly critical of Wilson - the former regarding him as a traitor to socialism, the latter as contributing directly to British decline. With contributions from leading experts in the fields of political study, and from Wilson's own contemporaries, this remarkable new study offers a timely and wide-ranging reappraisal of one of the giants of twentieth-century politics, examining the context within which he operated, his approach to leadership and responses to changing social and economic norms, the successes and failure of his policies, and how he was viewed by peers from across the political spectrum. Finally, it examines the overall impact of Harold Wilson on the development of British politics.
Download or read book One Vs All written by Ashok Anand and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One vs All: Narendra Modi-Pariah to Paragon is all truth. Ashok Anand has dissected ages-old layers of ignorance, myths and ego with his surgical observation to let the truth breathe out of the diseased society. It shames the political class, bureaucracy and religious bigots. It unmasks an absolutely hypocrite society that clings to the past, despises change, lives in denial but notorious for hidden avarice, arrogance and lust. Each chapter of this book will unfold many bitter truths. Have ever thought why a poor tea-seller boy, today occupying the prime minister's chair, is not corrupt, greedy and foul-mouthed like most of the others in the country? How a "Pariah" pronounced by the anti-national political forces could become a "Paragon" of values? The Indian society, howsoever ignorant and selfish maybe, needs space to evolve, grow and prosper. Would Narendra Modi be able to do that? Truth is very hard to digest. If brave enough, go ahead and read. Not a thriller. Better than a thriller. One vs. All: Narendra Modi-Pariah to Paragon takes the reader to the demonic world of Indian politics, surrounded by the intrigues of a superstitious and ignorant society that loves dwelling in the past and detests any change.
