Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Donnelly's Reviewers During the progress of these pages through the press, the author, William D. O'Connor, Assistant General Superintendent of the Life-Saving Service, passed suddenly away from the conflicts and controversies of life. He had suffered for a long time from partial paralysis. He was regarded as a confirmed sufferer, and the announcement of his death at Washington on the morning of May 9, 1887, came as a sad surprise to a wide circle of admiring friends. Mr. O'Connor was an enthusiast in the work in which he was engaged. He was very proud of his department of the Government service, and often spoke hopefully of a time when shipwrecks on the American coast would be almost impossible. There can be no doubt that if Mr. O'Connor had devoted himself wholly to literature he would have made more than a common mark. As it is, he has left behind him more than one powerful contribution to the current controversy on the Baconian authorship of the "Shakspearean plays." Book excerpt: Takes us into the bizarre and often humorous lives of such people as Lady Blount, who was sure that the earth is flat, Cyrus Teed, who believed that the earth is a hollow shell with us in the inside; Edward Hine, who believed that the British are the lost Tribes of Israel; and Baron de Guldenstubbe, who was sure that statues wrote him letters. British writer and housewife Nesta Webster devoted her life to exposing international conspiracies, and Father O'Callaghan devoted his to opposing interest on loans. The extraordinary characters in this book were and in some cases still are wholehearted enthusiasts for the various causes and outrageous notions they adopted, and John Michell describes their adventures with spirit and compassion.

Download or read book The Correspondence of Walt Whitman (Vol. 4) written by Eric Miller and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1989-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After decades of feminism and deconstruction, romance remains firmly in place as a central preoccupation in the lives of most women. Divorce rates skyrocket, the traditional family is challenged from all sides, and yet romance seems indestructible. In terms of its cultural representation, the popularity of romance also appears unchallenged. Popular fiction, Hollywood cinema, television soap-operas, and the media in general all display a seemingly bottomless appetite for romantic subjects. The trappings of classic romance--white weddings, love songs, Valentine's Day--are as commercially viable as ever.In this anthology of original essays, romance is revisited from a wide spectrum of perspectives, not just in fiction and film but in a whole range of cultural phenomena. Essays range over such issues as Valentine's Day, interracial relationships, medieval erotic visions and modern romance fiction, the relationship between the lesbian poet H.D. and Bryher, the pervasive whiteness of romantic desire, lesbian erotica in the age of AIDS, and the public romance of Charles and Diana.
