P: A Biography and Appreciation IN this brief sketch of Mr. Asquith, the author has aimed at a portrayal of the man, of the politician, and has sought to emphasise the persistency of the qualities which, first appearing in the child and the undergraduate, are seen to-day in the statesman. The privacies of life have been respected, as, in a biography of a living subject, they should be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Empire in Arms Our Prime Minister, Mr. Asquith, has said that we have gone into this war in defence of our own honour and to uphold the public law of Europe. That is undoubtedly true, but there is even more than these involved in this struggle, the greatest that the world has ever known. The very existence of our Empire is in issue, and that issue will be decided on the battlefields of Europe. Our great Dominions have realised the momentous character of the issue, and they are sending to us their best in men and material to lighten the titanic burden that is falling on the Motherland. They awakened early to a sense of duty, and Canada was foremost in the coming. Verily one is proud to be a Canadian. This is Canada first in reality. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Price of Home Rule Mr. Asquith's declaration with regard to Home Rule, made on December loth, 1909, revived an issue which, so far as England is concerned, had lain almost dormant since 1893, although the question never slept in Ireland. The immediate effects of that declaration were two. One was to engage the Irish Roman Catholic vote in this island to the Liberal cause; the other, to rouse Ulster, which is Loyal Ireland, to a sense of her danger. As regards English people, the moral of the situation was, and is, the fact that the Prime Minister deliberately proposed to concede the demands of the Nationalist party in Ireland, in return for their help in abolishing the veto (as it is called) of the House of Lords. That is to say, we presume, that there may be a difference between what people, even people in leading positions, suppose to be the aim of the war, and What it really is. The current formulas on this subject circulated in this country may prove, on more atten tive analysis, to reflect popular feelings rather than immanent realities of the universal Situation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the feminist movement, we're currently living in an "oppressive patriarchy" which keeps women down and benefits men. What if this story that we've been told repeatedly over the past 50 years isn't true? What if, instead of being oppressed, women are actually part of a privileged class and have been for centuries? In this book, you'll find many current and historical examples. You'll read about the suffragettes who attempted to burn down the theatre at Dublin and were sentenced to the "hard labour" of... knitting, and the lady who walked after she murdered her husband and child by setting them on fire, then gained the mercy of the court with the claim that she was "a childless widow, all alone in the world"! Now, for the first time ever, you can read about the struggle for gender equality as never before... not only from the man's point of view, but also in 100%%%% phonetic English.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hopes for English Religion WE are beginning the fourth year Of the war; our leaders have been taking stock and clearly stating its Objects. Many statements Of these are made. Some Of them concern diplomatic arrangements or legal topics. With these we are not concerned here; what we are concerned with is the conflict between principles. The war, we have been told, is a war Of ideals, and this is in the main true. The conflict is between the soul Of the English and the soul Of the Prus sian. Our danger is that in conquering the body Of our enemy we shall be inspired with his spirit. Last week Mr. Asquith defined the meaning Of the struggle as the conflict between ideals Of freedom and Of force. SO far as we are assured that freedom is the end for which we are fighting, we know that our aim is spiritual. Faith in freedom implies faith in the spiritual nature Of man. Prussia in its Characteristic incarnation, Bismarck, always scouted the ideal Of freedom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Review of Reviews for Australasia: July, 1910 There is an if, and there is great virtue in an if. Mr. Asquith can advise the Crown that certain things must be. Done if a certain result is to be attained in this Parliament, without in any way committing him self to advise the Crown to do those things, assuming that His Majesty sees no reason why the result should be attained in this Parliament. The distinction is important, because it is to the last degree improb able that Mr. Asquith would advise the King to take the steps indicated in this Parliament. The majority is not good enough, Ministers themselves being judges, to ask for the employment of the Royal prerogative, not as a favour, but as an instru ment to the use of which, in case of political necessity, they are entitled. The advice Mr. Asquith will give the King will be, not the authoritative counsel of him who must be obeyed, but the communication of information to the effect that if our policy is to be carried out in this Parliament it can only be brought about in a certain way. Mr. Asquith, I take it, assumes that the King will certainly not take the initiative in making four hundred Peers in order to extinguish the House of Lords on the strength of a majority of a hundred in the House of Commons. Such are Whitman, Car penter and their followers. The conception lends itself to criticism because to attain good government it is highly undesirable that all the governed should worship at the same shrine; dissent is the very life-blood of harmony in things political. There are other persons, such as Mr. Asquith, for whom democracy is a limited liability affair, with an undistinguished coat of arms, bearing for its device a registra tion official, couchant, except in the first fortnight of july. Both these conceptions are sincerely held by a large number of excellent people, who firmly believe that the sovereign power resides in the people, and that it is desirable that it should continue to reside there. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Eternal Religion The Right Hon'ble Mr. Asquith expressed the pious hope at the historic meeting of Parliament in connection with the Armistice that War may become an anachronism in future. In this he echoed the universal wish. Every one is thinking of plans at this moment for making the coming peace perma nent on earth. Anything that should tend towards lessening the chance of falling out between men - whatever might be the source of dissension - was worthy of attention as a means towards the desired end. The steady elimination of every element of strife should be the aim of our united efforts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
