Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a chronic cerebrovascular disease characterized by progressive stenosis of the arteries of the circle of Willis, and formation of a collateral vascular network at the base of the brain. Moyamoya syndrome is caused by numerous conditions, which lead to arterial occlusion of the circle of Willis and resultant collaterals reminiscent of moyamoya disease. Due to the diverse angioarchitecture and unknown influence factors, the hemodynamic disturbances of MMD/Moyamoya syndrome are complicated, and result in multimodal clinical manifestations including headache, cognitive impairment, seizures, TIA, infarction, and hemorrhage. Surgical revascularization has been proven as effective in decreasing incidence of long-term risk of stroke. However, occurrence of perioperative stroke and complications such as seizures and cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome are still unpredictable. In addition, many patients with cognitive impairment cannot benefit from surgical revascularization and the mechanism remains unclear. Thus, a series of studies focusing on the objective evaluation of MMD/Moyamoya syndrome are needed to help understand this complicated cerebrovascular disease and improve our treatment strategy. The goal of this Research Topic is to better understand the pathophysiological nature of MMD/Moyamoya syndrome through objective neuroimaging. We also aim to generate a reasonable and objective evaluation system for MMD/ Moyamoya syndrome and would like to understand the link between cognitive impairment and brain damage of MMD/Moyamoya syndrome though neuroimaging. Through these findings we also aim to improve the treatment strategy by understanding the pathophysiological link with relevant complications. Finally, we also aim to improve our understanding of the significance of perioperative management for patients with severe complications from the perspective of objective evaluation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moyamoya disease is a rare cerebrovascular disease most prevalent in East Asian countries. Thanks to new diagnostic capabilities, the number of cases discovered, including asymptomatic patients, has been increasing steadily. However, asymptomatic from the clinical point of view does not necessarily mean that there are no subjacent problems. Indeed, many patients harbour cognitive decline long before they exhibit clinical or radiological manifestations. The only effective treatment is surgical revascularization, either direct, indirect, or combined. Many posit that preventive surgical treatment should be considered even in asymptomatic moyamoya patients, particularly in the paediatric age group. This book expands on these ideas and examines the various aspects of this dreadful disease.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moyamoya disease (MMD) was first reported as a new entity among vascular disorders in 1957. Named for the abnormal vascular networks found around the occluded distal internal carotid artery, it is the most common pediatric cerebrovascular disease in East Asia. In recent years large amounts of data on MMD have been collected and important investigations have been carried out in Japan and Korea, even as the pathophysiology of the disease remains to be discovered. This monograph covers a diversity of topics and presents a systematic compilation of the data and current status of MMD in clinical practice and basic research. With contributions by more than 70 authors, the book includes sections on genetics, computational analysis of hemodynamic shear stress, new imaging techniques, and endovascular treatment of MMD, along with practical applications and future directions for gene and stem cell therapies. For neurosurgeons as well as neurologists and pediatricians, this volume will help lead to more efficient and informed management of MMD.

Book excerpt: This book brings together the latest knowledge on moyamoya disease, covering diagnostic criteria, status as a disease entity, genetic aspects, pathophysiology, novel neuroradiological findings, and surgical therapy. Information is also provided on recent basic and clinical research with the aim of identifying future perspectives on the disease. Since moyamoya disease was first reported in an English language article more than 50 years ago, our understanding of it has advanced considerably. Genetic and radiological analysis has delivered novel insights, and the latest multicenter studies are changing routine diagnosis and surgical therapy. The gene encoding the ring finger protein 213 (RNF213) has been identified as a susceptibility gene for moyamoya disease. Indications and procedures for surgical revascularization have been revised, with resultant improvements in outcomes, and studies performed over the past decade have provided new knowledge on the neuroradiological findings before and after surgery. In describing these advances, this book will be an invaluable asset for all general physicians, pediatricians, neurologists, radiologists, and neurosurgeons who care for patients with moyamoya disease across the world.

This is a completely revised and updated sixth edition of the highly respected standard for stroke diagnosis and treatment. Dr James Toole has stayed on as a consultant for the text, and Drs E. Steve Roach, Kerstin Bettermann, and Jose Biller have reworked Dr Toole's book to include chapters on genetics, pregnancy-related stroke, and acute treatments. The practical focus of the book has not changed, retaining its emphasis on bedside diagnosis and treatment. Easily accessible both for stroke specialists and residents, the sixth edition has been modernized to keep pace with the rapid expansion of knowledge in stroke care and includes evidence-based recommendations, the latest technology and imaging, and risk factors. The text is supplemented with more than 200 images, many in color.
