Book excerpt: Volume exploring the important but neglected Spanish female poet Angela Figuera Aymerich. Angela Figuera Aymerich (1902-84) remains an obscure figure among the Spanish social poets of the Franco regime, her work almost entirely eclipsed by male contemporaries. This book attempts both to bring her poetry to the attention of a wider audience and to show how her work anticipates the generation of women writers and poets who have emerged since the coming of democracy. Focusing primarily on a selection of poems published between 1948 and 1962, Dr Evans shows how her work has been mistakenly ignored as maternal in essence and so of little interest to the poetry of social protest in general. Using feminist and psychoanalytical theories of language to suggest that identity (andpoetic identity in particular) is constructed as the effect of mirror images, the author argues that the `moving reflections' of gender, faith and aesthetics mirror Figuera's struggle with a fragmented poetic identity; through these concepts her work can be read not only as a `moving reflection' of maternal femininity and social injustice, but as an active attempt to retrace the boundaries of female identity. JO EVANS teaches in the Departmentof Hispanic Studies, Edinburgh University.

Book excerpt: The experience of watching films – entertaining, moving, instructive, frightening or exciting as they may be – can be enriched by the opportunity to reflect upon them from unconventional perspectives.Psychoanalytic Reflections on Film: Moving Images offers its readers in an accessible language one such viewpoint, informed by Andrea Sabbadini's psychoanalytic insights and therapeutic experience. Using a psychoanalytic interpretative approach, some twenty-five important feature films are discussed as the artistic vehicles of new, unsuspected meanings. The first chapter looks at films which represent psychoanalytic work itself, having therapists and their patients as their main characters. The remaining five chapters cover movies on themes of central concern to analytic theorists and clinicians, such as childhood and adolescent development, and varieties of intimate relationships among adults. The latter include romantic love and its disturbing association to death fantasies; eroticism and prostitution; and voyeuristic desire – a significant phenomenon in this context given its parallels with the activity of watching films. Andrea Sabbadini's psychoanalytic approach, which explores the part played by unconscious factors in shaping the personality and behaviour of film characters, is used to interpret their internal world and the emotional conflicts engendered by the vicissitudes they live through. The book is completed by a filmography and biographical notes on film directors. Psychoanalytic Reflections on Film presents the relationship between cinema and psychoanalysis as a complex one. These two most different of cultural phenomena are shown to share a wish on the part of their practitioners to uncover profound truths about the human condition, and to provide a language with which to describe them. Going beyond futile ‘psycho-historical’ attempts to analyse filmmakers through their products, or a superficial application of psychoanalytic concepts to film, Sabbadini shows how both cinema and psychoanalysis can benefit from a meaningful interdisciplinary dialogue between them. The book will be of special interest to practicing psychoanalysts and students, scholars and historians of film studies.

It explores the history, practice and theory of Authentic Movement which integrates the fields of dance, movement and psychotherapy. Providing a contemporary and new perspective, the book moves beyond the purely therapeutic and spiritual aims of Authentic Movement and opens it up to new applications. The first part of the book introduces the history and practice of Authentic Movement, describing and illustrating origins, forms and specific expert terminology and explaining their rationale. It then develops an in-depth analysis of particular aspects of Authentic Movement, from the perspective of an expert practitioner using philosophy and the lens of art making. Case studies exemplify how the practices and qualities of Authentic Movement can aid creative, reflective research processes in dance, movement, therapy and research as well as in choreography, pedagogy, psychotherapy and natural sciences. The book emphasises a philosophical and scholarly approach which is rooted in interdisciplinary arts practices and psychotherapy. The book offers a solid grounding and guide to Authentic Movement will be accessible to scholars and students of Dance Movement Therapy, as well as counsellors, dancers, choreographers, psychotherapists and researchers in the arts and humanities.

Book excerpt: Despite astute critiques and available resources for alternative modes of thinking and practicing, individualism continues to be a dominating and constraining ideology in the field of pastoral psychotherapy and counseling. Philip Rieff was one of the first to highlight the negative implications of individualism in psychotherapeutic theories and practices. As heirs and often enthusiasts of the Freudian tradition of which Rieff and others are critical, pastoral theologians have felt the sting of his charge, and yet the empirical research that McClure presents shows that pastoral-counseling practitioners resist change. Their attempts to overcome an individualistic perspective have been limited and ineffective because individualism is embedded in the field's dominant theological and theoretical resources, practices, and organizational arrangements. Only a radical reappraisal of these will make possible pastoral counseling practices in a post-individualistic mode. McClure proposes several critical transformations: broadening and deepening the operative theologies used to guide the healing practice, expanding the role of the pastoral counselor, reimagining the operative anthropology, reclaiming sin and judgment, nuancing the particular against the individual, rethinking the ideal outcome of the practices, and reimagining the organizational structures that support the practices. Only this level of revisioning will enable this ministry of the church to move beyond its individualistic limitations and offer healing in more complex, effective, and socially adequate ways.
