Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bartholomew Stovall, fatherless as an infant and orphaned at the age of ten, was born during the worst of times in English history. Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds against him, he dared to do the extraordinary and embarked on a journey that not only changed his life but also reshaped the future of his family. In Bartholomew Stovall - The English Immigrant, author William Robert Stovall Sr., a descendant of Bartholomew, traces the remarkable life of this man, capturing both his hardships and conquests, while painting a portrait of life in 17th century England and America. On July 7, 1684, Bartholomew boards the Booth, a slave-hauling ship bound for Jamestown, Virginia. The transatlantic voyage is fraught with uncertainty, and its end marks the beginning of a new chapter in his life. Before boarding the ship, Bartholomew had signed an indenture agreement to serve four years in the New World, a decision that would prove to be life changing. In Virginia, Bartholomew serves plantation owner Richard Kennon and his infamous wife, Elizabeth Worsham Kennon, who quickly recognizes that he is a remarkable person. By the time he completes his indenture obligation a trust bond forms between master and servant. When offered a secure life working for the Kennon's he refuses and opts for land and tools, and begins the task of attaining his foreseen destiny. This compelling chronicle is based on the known facts of an English immigrant and his adventure filled journey to a new life and future. It relays a powerful message of hope, courage, and the sacrifice that must be made in order to achieve one's dreams. This is the story of Bartholomew Stovall - The English Immigrant.
Book Synopsis Liquor Store Theatre by : Maya Stovall
Download or read book Liquor Store Theatre written by Maya Stovall and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For six years Maya Stovall staged Liquor Store Theatre, a conceptual art and anthropology video project---included in the Whitney Biennial in 2017---in which she danced near the liquor stores in her Detroit neighborhood as a way to start conversations with her neighbors. In this book of the same name, Stovall uses the project as a point of departure for understanding everyday life in Detroit and the possibilities for ethnographic research, art, and knowledge creation. Her conversations with her neighbors—which touch on everything from economics, aesthetics, and sex to the political and economic racism that undergirds Detroit's history—bring to light rarely acknowledged experiences of longtime Detroiters. In these exchanges, Stovall enacts an innovative form of ethnographic engagement that offers new modes of integrating the social sciences with the arts in ways that exceed what either approach can achieve alone.

Book Synopsis The Chattanooga Campaign by : Steven E. Woodworth
Download or read book The Chattanooga Campaign written by Steven E. Woodworth and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 2012-08-29 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Confederates emerged as victors in the Chickamauga Campaign, the Union Army of the Cumberland lay under siege in Chattanooga, with Braxton Bragg’s Army of Tennessee on nearby high ground at Missionary Ridge and Lookout Mountain. A win at Chattanooga was essential for the Confederates, both to capitalize on the victory at Chickamauga and to keep control of the gateway to the lower South. Should the Federal troops wrest control of that linchpin, they would cement their control of eastern Tennessee and gain access to the Deep South. In the fall 1863 Chattanooga Campaign, the new head of the western Union armies, Ulysses S. Grant, sought to break the Confederate siege. His success created the opportunity for the Union to start a campaign to capture Atlanta the following spring. Woodworth’s introduction sets the stage for ten insightful essays that provide new analysis of this crucial campaign. From the Battle of Wauhatchie to the Battle of Chattanooga, the contributors’ well-researched and vividly written assessments of both Union and Confederate actions offer a balanced discussion of the complex nature of the campaign and its aftermath. Other essays give fascinating examinations of the reactions to the campaign in northern newspapers and by Confederate soldiers from west of the Mississippi River. Complete with maps and photos, The Chattanooga Campaign contains a wealth of detailed information about the military, social, and political aspects of the campaign and contributes significantly to our understanding of the Civil War’s western theater. Some have allied themselves with the Second Ascension in return for power and protection, but the Frith Guild aims to form a counter alliance. Volke Savan, along with the other arcanists of the Frith Guild, must not only find a way to end the arcane plague once and for all, but prevent the remaining god-creatures from falling into the hands of their enemies. If the Frith Guild can form an alliance between powerful nations, and defeat the Autarch before he bonds with any god-creatures, perhaps a war can be prevented. But the dragon arcanists of distant lands have come to challenge Volke and test his worthiness. Despite the ever-mounting pressures, and lack of time, Volke is determined to not only convince the world's strongest arcanists of his worth, but to also defeat the god-arcanists of the Second Ascension long before the appearance of the dreaded apoch dragon. Continue the Frith Chronicles with the sixth book, Warlord Arcanist!

Book excerpt: Rooted in the initial struggle of community members who staged a successful hunger strike to secure a high school in their Chicago neighborhood, David Omotoso Stovall's Born Out of Struggle focuses on his first-hand participation in the process to help design the school. Offering important lessons about how to remain accountable to communities while designing a curriculum with a social justice agenda, Stovall explores the use of critical race theory to encourage its practitioners to spend less time with abstract theories and engage more with communities that make a concerted effort to change their conditions. Stovall provides concrete examples of how to navigate the constraints of working with centralized bureaucracies in education and apply them to real-world situations.

Download or read book White Freedom written by Tyler Stovall and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The racist legacy behind the Western idea of freedom The era of the Enlightenment, which gave rise to our modern conceptions of freedom and democracy, was also the height of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. America, a nation founded on the principle of liberty, is also a nation built on African slavery, Native American genocide, and systematic racial discrimination. White Freedom traces the complex relationship between freedom and race from the eighteenth century to today, revealing how being free has meant being white. Tyler Stovall explores the intertwined histories of racism and freedom in France and the United States, the two leading nations that have claimed liberty as the heart of their national identities. He explores how French and American thinkers defined freedom in racial terms and conceived of liberty as an aspect and privilege of whiteness. He discusses how the Statue of Liberty—a gift from France to the United States and perhaps the most famous symbol of freedom on Earth—promised both freedom and whiteness to European immigrants. Taking readers from the Age of Revolution to today, Stovall challenges the notion that racism is somehow a paradox or contradiction within the democratic tradition, demonstrating how white identity is intrinsic to Western ideas about liberty. Throughout the history of modern Western liberal democracy, freedom has long been white freedom. A major work of scholarship that is certain to draw a wide readership and transform contemporary debates, White Freedom provides vital new perspectives on the inherent racism behind our most cherished beliefs about freedom, liberty, and human rights.
