Book excerpt: People living in the Great Lakes region are already feeling the effects of a changing climate. Shifts in seasonal temperatures and precipitation patterns could have dramatic impacts on the economy, ecology, and quality of life. In this illuminating and thorough volume, leading scholars address the challenge of preparing for climate change in the region, where decision makers from various sectors—government, agriculture, recreation, and tourism—must increasingly be aware of the need to incorporate climate change into their short- and long-term planning. The chapters in this revealing book, written by some of the foremost climate change scholars in North America, outline the major trends in the climate of the Great Lakes region, how humans might cope with the uncertainty of climate change impacts, and examples of on-the-ground projects that have addressed these issues.

Book excerpt: This volume presents some of the most exciting recent advances in the area of osmoregulation, from the control of gene expression to whole animal response. In particular, the differences and similarities in the drinking response between a number of vertebrate groups including both aquatic and terrestrial organisms are discussed. This volume will be of interest to all those working in the fields of marine and freshwater biology, comparative physiology and endocrinology and molecular biology of ion transporters and water channels. This book is in the Experimental Biology Reviews series (also known as SEB Seminar Series).

This book was released on 1997-05-31 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a synthesis of basic biological and conservation data for more than 30 species of sturgeons (Acipenseridae), paddlefishes (Polyodontidae) and their fossil allies in the order Acipenseriformes. Since the Jurassic, the four families of sturgeon-like fish have been restricted to the Holarctic, where until very recently they flourished in most major river systems. Today, however, virtually all species of sturgeons and paddlefishes face difficult conservation issues. Papers in the first section of this volume examine paleontology, systematics, evolution and basic biology of Acipenseriformes. The second section of this volume details current conservation status for most of the world's living species of Acipenseriformes. These papers mark the first attempt to make such a global review of recent data from across the northern hemisphere. The emerging picture is discouraging, for negative anthropogenic impacts range from overfishing to water pollution, to dams and water diversion projects, and all species are threatened to some degree. The third section of the volume considers specific human impacts and responses to conservation issues. These include: the Aral Sea ecological disaster and its impact on native sturgeons; a review of methods for restoring sturgeon populations; the use of molecular techniques in developing conservation strategies; the extreme sensitivity of sturgeons and paddlefishes to overfishing; and the history of a recently convicted caviar poaching ring. The volume's summary reviews the status of all extant species and notes future directions for research on behavior, ecology and population biology that could lead to better co-ordinated international conservation efforts.

Book excerpt: This book draws together the most relevant and recent advances in the area of ionic transport in animals. In particular, it describes the role of modern cell and molecular biology research techniques in this rapidly advancing field. These techniques have led to important advances in our knowledge of cellular mechanisms of ion transporting epithelia, the role and expression of osmoregulatory hormones and a new understanding of whole body salt and water balance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: International Conference on Fish Migration and Bypass Channels held in Vienna in September 1996. It covers the range of fish pass technologies currently in use throughout the world and attempts to develop a wider, more ecological perspective on this formerly engineering-orientated discipline. Emphasis is placed on enhancing an understanding of fish migration behaviour, and achieving optimum design to meet the behavioural requirements of all known migratory species. Additional attention is paid to comparing the European trend towards constructing nature-like bypass channels with the highly technical solutions dominant in North America.

Book excerpt: Describes a field study designed to establish seasonal habitat use relationships for adult lake sturgeon on the Groundhog River, north-eastern Ontario. The study was conducted in 1996 and examined lake sturgeon habitat use during spring and autumn seasons, representing high and low water conditions respectively. Fish were netted in randomly chosen locations in the study area, upstream and downstream of the Camus Rapids, and were measured, weighed, marked, and released. Catch, meristic, and habitat parameter data were entered into an electronic data base and analyzed using the SYSTAT program. Results presented include sturgeon length frequency distributions, substrate and depth preferences exhibited, and stream velocity preferences.
