Book Synopsis Mountain House by : Nina Freudenberger
Download or read book Mountain House written by Nina Freudenberger and published by Clarkson Potter. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A photographic study of more than twenty houses and the mountain landscapes, from alpine forests to urban peaks, that embrace them. Spanning continents and climates, the twenty homes presented in interior designer Nina Freudenberger’s latest book challenge and expand the idea of what a mountain house might be. Artist retreats in Morocco’s High Atlas and the snowy folds of the Engadine Valley in Switzerland speak to the long tradition of mountains spaces for contemplation and creation, while modernist masterworks in Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro expand the traditional image of log cabins and rustic chalets. Depicted in over 200 images, these houses include brutalist lodges, clapboard cottages, and minimalist prisms set down among some of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. In their spectacular diversity, they express the radical ingenuity and stunning creativity that the mountains have always inspired.

Download or read book Cohousing Communities written by Charles Durrett and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2022-08-30 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore a groundbreaking and holistic new approach to designing community-first neighborhoods In Cohousing Communities: Designing for High-Functioning Neighborhoods, distinguished architect and affordable housing advocate Charles Durrett delivers a complete, start-to-finish guide for designing anything where the emphasis lies with the community. This book describes the consequential role that architecture and a healthy design process can play in the success of neighborhoods, churches, towns, and more. It’s an inspiring collection of ideas that prioritize high-functioning neighborhoods. In the book, the author draws on the success of hundreds of community-first projects to show readers how to design a project that addresses both timeless and modern challenges—from aging to climate change and racism—in its architecture and urban design. He compiles facts and concepts that are essential to the design of a high-functioning community, where people can participate in a way that reflects their values, improves their social connections, and retain their autonomy and privacy. Readers will also find: Ideas for town planning, street planning, and other town altering improvements Discussions of how developers can make better multifamily housing Explorations of how planners and politicians can make high-functioning neighborhoods a cornerstone of their community In-depth treatments of families who want to confirm that they’re choosing the right neighborhood Perfect for university students and professors who strive to see new ways to create neighborhoods, Cohousing Communities: Designing for High-Functioning Neighborhoods will also appeal to universities planning new neighborhoods for retired alumni or new housing for students and faculty. Praise for Charles Durrett and Cohousing Communities: “...Get and read Cohousing Communities... Read it from the front cover to the back cover. It’s The Bible of Cohousing. And, like The Bible, it needs to be STUDIED not just read. Mark it up w/ your questions. Highlight, underline, write in the margins, fold the corners... This way you will gather your understanding how building cohousing gets “done," create your pathway to “Getting It Built”... and, most importantly get everyone on the same page for working together.” -- Ann Zabaldo, Executive Director, Mid Atlantic Cohousing

Book Synopsis Mohonk Mountain House and Preserve by : Robi Josephson
Download or read book Mohonk Mountain House and Preserve written by Robi Josephson and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mohonk is a name of Native American origin first given to a lake high in the Shawangunk Mountains of Ulster County. Mohonk Lake was sculpted eons ago by the crushing weight of advancing glaciers. Nature's handiwork resulted in a crystal blue lake rimmed by stately hemlock trees and sheer conglomerate cliffs. Mohonk Mountain House was established at the lake in 1869 by Quaker twins Albert and Alfred Smiley. They and younger half-brother, Daniel Smiley, created a mountaintop haven for their guests-a 251-room hotel set on acres of woodlands and gardens. Today Daniel Smiley's descendants welcome visitors to the last of the grand Victorian hotels in the Shawangunk and Catskill Mountain region. The Mohonk Preserve was carved from lands of the Mountain House beginning in 1963 and bears witness to the vision of the Smiley family. Its mission is to protect over 6,400 acres of semi-wilderness through its education, research, and land stewardship programs. Today, it is the largest nature preserve supported by members and visitors in New York State.
