Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We typically take public space for granted, as if it has continuously been there, yet public space has always been the expression of the will of some agency (person or institution) who names the space, gives it purpose, and monitors its existence. And often its use has been contested. These new essays, written for this volume, approach public space through several key questions: Who has the right to define public space? How do such places generate and sustain symbolic meaning? Is public space unchanging, or is it subject to our subjective perception? Do we, given the public nature of public space, have the right to subvert it? These eighteen essays, including several case studies, offer convincing evidence of a spatial turn in American studies. They argue for a re-visioning of American culture as a history of place-making and the instantiation of meaning in structures, boundaries, and spatial configurations. Chronologically the subjects range from Pierre L’Enfant’s initial majestic conceptualization of Washington, D.C. to the post-modern realization that public space in the U.S. is increasingly a matter of waste. Topics range from parks to cities to small towns, from open-air museums to airports, encompassing the commercial marketing of place as well as the subversion and re-possession of public space by the disenfranchised. Ultimately, public space is variously imagined as the site of social and political contestation and of aesthetic change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Derek Prinsley graduated in Medicine in 1942. A chance contact he had with a pioneer in geriatric medicine started his own pioneering path in England, Australia and America, where he has developed clear examples of the components of a geriatric medical service. At the University of Melbourne he was appointed to the first Chair of Geriatric Medicine, and he has also been a consultant to the World Health Organisation. In America he was the Mitchell Distinguished Professor of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch, where he organised acute medical care of older people. In retirement he suddenly became a full-time 'carer' of disability in the family. Growing, effective support services are now available in the community and in homes. The spread of these good ideas is making the better care of older people in their own surroundings possible.

Tony Speers, a newly promoted sergeant, arrives at Mountroyal RUC Station, located in the heart of East Belfast. When Tony meets up with his new section he quickly realises he has inherited a very dysfunctional group of individuals. They include a reluctant genius, an alcoholic and other endearing personalities who combine to make ‘A’ Section a close and effective unit. A spate of sinister sexual attacks have recently occurred in the area raising local tensions, leaving females afraid to go out at night. The uniformed police and local CID have thus far drawn a blank in apprehending the offender. The sub divisional commander of Mountroyal Station is under increasing pressure from local politicians, the chief constable, the press and local paramilitaries to make an arrest. Join Tony and the gang as they try to crack this case as well as attend to other miscellaneous calls within the Mountroyal Sub Division.

Book excerpt: Mount Royal College began in Calgary in 1910 as a small, private residential Methodist institution offering advanced elementary and secondary schooling to students from both the city and the rural hinterland. Today, it is a degree-granting university with over 10,000 students in credit programs and some 40,000 more in continuing education courses. This lively and sensitive history draws on an impressive body of archival sources, oral histories, and interviews as well as sound and current scholarship on the history and theory of post-secondary education.

Book excerpt: In its heyday, Colorado had more than 175 ski areas operating on the slopes of the Rocky Mountains, and while many of those resorts have shut down, their runs still shelter secret stashes of snow. Pristine slopes await backcountry powder hounds out to discover these chutes and steeps, bunny hills and bumps. Chronicling the history of more than 36 of these "lost resorts," Powder Ghost Towns provides the beta for how to ski and board these classic runs today, with comprehensive information on trailheads, where to skin up, and the best descents. Coverage ranges from southern Wyoming's Medicine Bow Mountains to the Colorado-New Mexico border, including famous old resorts like Hidden Valley in Rocky Mountain National Park.
