Book Synopsis Edwardian Devon 1900-1914 by : Dr David Parker

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A century ago, Britain was locked in a devastating worldwide conflict that would change every aspect of society. This book explores life in Devon between 1900 and 1914, offering a revealing glimpse of a world now long-vanished before war broke out. Devon was no backwater; its railways and shipping were busy bringing tourists in and sending vast quantities of produce out. It was, though, a county of contrasts and change. Farming had reinvented itself after the late Victorian depression, but villages were in decline; churches and chapels were full but religion bitterly divided communities; the wealthy enjoyed extravagant lifestyles on great estates but their authority was under attack. Devon's upper-, middle- and lower-class schools perfectly reflected the Edwardian social hierarchy, but as the county's elections revealed, society was being torn asunder by bitter controversies over exactly who should have the vote, rule the country, and control the Empire. It was a worrying time overseas too: Great Britain's supremacy was increasingly challenged, and the warships in Devon's harbours and army manoeuvres on the moors drew many comments as the storm clouds began to gather over Europe. Using mainly contemporary sources, this engaging book examines the attitudes and experiences of people across all social classes in this tumultuous era.

Book excerpt: Biographer, Reilley Bennett has always reveled in peeling back the layers of complex characters, and her latest target may prove her ultimate temptation. The brooding intensity of Formula One’s hotshot—and gorgeous—engineer ignites Reilley’s interest, but the reserved and mysterious Devon Grey isn’t about to let the tenacious author poke around in his life. He’s too busy guarding his secrets behind an aloof, impenetrable wall. But Reilley’s perseverance pays off when, out of the blue, Devon agrees to let her shadow him through an entire race season. She’s too busy celebrating her win to ask herself why he changed his mind. As the season progresses, attraction ignites between the ambitious writer and her reluctant subject, and the layers she longed to discover crumble beneath her hands. What she finds, though, blows away her preconceptions, leaving her shaken to the core. With Devon’s fiercely guarded secret exposed, can Reilley save their relationship and Devon’s reputation?

Book Synopsis North British Type 2 B-B Diesel-Hydraulic Locomotives, B R Class 22 - Volume 2 - Detailed Insights by : Anthony P Sayer
Download or read book North British Type 2 B-B Diesel-Hydraulic Locomotives, B R Class 22 - Volume 2 - Detailed Insights written by Anthony P Sayer and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Railways Pilot Scheme orders of 1955 included six North British Type 2 diesel-hydraulic locomotives, these being introduced during 1959 for use on the Western Region. Without operational experience, a further fifty-two locomotives were delivered between 1959 and 1962. The fleet survived intact until 1968, when half of the class was withdrawn due to declining traffic levels across the UK, with successive National Traction Plans progressively selecting the less successful, non-standard and numerically-challenged classes for removal from traffic. All fifty-eight locomotives were withdrawn by New Years Day, 1972. This book, the second of two, builds on the overview of the class provided in Volume 1, and makes extensive use of available archive material and the personal observations of numerous enthusiasts. Previously unpublished information, covering the performance issues of these locomotives, form a central focus, together with details of fire incidents and accidents. Liveries and detail differences are given in-depth treatment to illustrate that there really were reasons and a logical progression behind the complicated series of design modifications applied to the Class. Volume 2 concludes with sections on storage, withdrawal and final disposal.
