Book excerpt: General equations are derived for the approximate solution of the flow of a heavy infinite depth about a submerged circular cylinder where the center of the cylinder is submerged 1.5 diameter or greater. Then by replacing the cylinder by a dipole of a certain strength an equation is derived for the wave resistance of a circular cylinder moving in a fluid of finite depth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cylinder investigates the surprising proliferation of cylindrical objects in the nineteenth century, such as steam engines, phonographs, panoramas, rotary printing presses, silos, safety locks, and many more. Examining this phenomenon through the lens of kinematics, the science of forcing motion, Helmut Müller-Sievers provides a new view of the history of mechanics and of the culture of the industrial revolution, including its literature, that focuses on the metaphysics and aesthetics of motion. Müller-Sievers explores how nineteenth-century prose falls in with the specific rhythm of cylindrical machinery, re-imagines the curvature of cylindrical spaces, and conjoins narrative progress and reflection in a single stylistic motion. Illuminating the intersection of engineering, culture, and literature, he argues for a concept of culture that includes an epoch’s relation to the motion of its machines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The steady motions set up by a cylinder rotating in a linearly stratified fluid are investigated both theoretically and experimentally. It is observed that the bulk of the flow is horizontal, characterized by a system of jets located at the level of the cylinder and extending out laterally for large distances. Directly adjacent to either of the cylinder flanks, however, the flow is oriented vertically in a relatively thin boundary layer. Separate visco-diffusive theories for the horizontal 'far-field' flow and the vertical 'near-field' flow are developed. By an integral analysis of the entire flow field it is shown that the far-field flow depends on the details of the near-field flow only through a parametric constant representing the difference between the applied viscous torque and the total buoyancy countertorque which opposes this applied torque.

This book was released on 1972 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When an elastically supported circular cylinder is brought into steady fluid flow, flutter motions occur when it is subjected to flow velocities which exceed a certain critical velocity. The flow-induced vibrations can be reduced by modifying the surface of the cylinder. This report discusses the effects of 21 surface modifications on the flow-induced vibrations. It is seen that surface modifications can reduce the amplitudes of the flutter motions.

Book excerpt: The time-dependent force acting on a cylinder undergoing harmonic in-line oscillations in an otherwise steady flow was measured for various amplitudes and frequencies of oscillation and mean flow velocity. The experiments were carried out in a recirculating water tunnel operating as an open channel with a free surface at the test section. The time-dependent force has been expressed in terms of a mean drag coefficient and the Fourier-averaged drag and inertia coefficients and as functions of the relative amplitude and a frequency paramter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of two books concentrating on the dynamics of slender bodies within or containing axial flow, Fluid-Structure Interaction, Volume 1 covers the fundamentals and mechanisms giving rise to flow-induced vibration, with a particular focus on the challenges associated with pipes conveying fluid. This volume has been thoroughly updated to reference the latest developments in the field, with a continued emphasis on the understanding of dynamical behaviour and analytical methods needed to provide long-term solutions and validate the latest computational methods and codes. In this edition, Chapter 7 from Volume 2 has also been moved to Volume 1, meaning that Volume 1 now mainly treats the dynamics of systems subjected to internal flow, whereas in Volume 2 the axial flow is in most cases external to the flow or annular. Provides an in-depth review of an extensive range of fluid-structure interaction topics, with detailed real-world examples and thorough referencing throughout for additional detail Organized by structure and problem type, allowing you to dip into the sections that are relevant to the particular problem you are facing, with numerous appendices containing the equations relevant to specific problems Supports development of long-term solutions by focusing on the fundamentals and mechanisms needed to understand underlying causes and operating conditions under which apparent solutions might not prove effective
