Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mother Goose in Prose Singularly enough, England's claim to the venerable old lady is of about the same date as Boston's. There lived in a town in Sussex, about the year 1704, dam. An old woman named Martha Gooch. She was a cap ital nurse, and in great demand to care for newly born babies; therefore, through long years of service as nurse, she came to be called Mother Gooch. This good woman had one peculiarity: she was accustomed to croon queer rhymes and Jingles over the cradles of her charges, and these rhymes seemed so senseless and silly to the people who overheard them that they began to call her Mother Goose, in derision, the term being derived from Queen Goosefoot, the mother of Charlemagne. The old nurse paid no attention to her critics, but continued to sing her rhymes as before; for, however much grown people might laugh at her, the children seemed to enjoy them very much, and not one of them was too peevish to be quieted and soothed by her verses. At one time Mistress Gooch was nursing a child of Mr. Ronald Barclay, a physician residing in the town, and he noticed the rhymes she sang and became interested in them. In time he wrote them all down and made a book of them, which it is said was printed by John Worthington 86 Son in the Strand, London, in 1712, under the name of Ye Melodious Rhymes of Mother Goofe. But even this story of Martha Gooch is based upon very meager and unsatisfactory evidence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes A search has been made among all books of nursery rhymes and songs brought out fifty years ago or more, in order that this edition should be as complete as possible. It is not claimed that there is any finality in a collection of nursery rhymes, for just as Oh, dear! What can the Matter be? Took root in the affections of children from being a popular song less than a century ago, so other rhymes are constantly being added to the children's chosen literature, or other verses to an older rhyme. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother Goose Primer This little Primer, for children just beginning to read, is written in the belief that their first reading lessons will appeal most strongly to their interest if founded on ideas which are already familiar. Before the children are allowed to read from the book they should have much blackboard reading based upon the Mother Goose rhymes which are here used. Each rhyme in the book is preceded by a full-page illustra tion. The children will readily talk about the picture, and will then be eager to read the simple sentences which follow the rhyme, and conclude with a prose version of the rhyme, a page of review sentences, and a page of action sentences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother Goose: Containing All the Melodies the Old Lady Ever Wrote AN edition of the real, original, and uncorrupted melodies of Mother Goose has long been desired by the lovers of ancient poetry. Being myself a lineal descendant of that venerable person, and having in my possession all her original manuscripts with her latest corrections, I was fortunately able to supply this want in a manner which shall leave nothing further to be desired. The present edition, therefore, which I have edited with great care and immense labour, may hence forward be considered the standard edition - the family edition, setting at nought all editions of outside perso ages who have no connexion with the Goose Family. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Reader: Aesop and Mother Goose While learning to read, children may at the same time be forming an acquaintance with permanent literature. This primer is planned to lead the pupil toward a knowledge of literature, along lines indicated by Mr. Scudder, Mr. Hall, and others; While the method of practical working has been guided by the daily experiences of the schoolroom. There are, on an average, about two new words for each page throughout the book. The words and sentences should be developed on the blackboard. The introductory sentences are so arranged that by the time a story is reached, nearly all the sentences in it are familiar; thus the reading of the story is a pleasure, and not a task. In preparing for any story, the first step is for the teacher to tell the story. To tell a story effectively is an art well worth cultivating. When the children are thoroughly interested, their minds are aroused to eager activity; they will talk, or draw, or write on the black board, and they learn rapidly. True expression and correct phrasing are easily secured. If the children have the story in mind, the preparatory sentences, otherwise disconnected, will have a bond of unity. Skillful questioning will elicit a good deal of thought, as well as some amusement, from these groups of sentences, and so the interest is kept up. The analytical study of words should be begun early. Some columns of words are given which may indicate broader study. The teacher should have a supply of letters and words, printed on stifi paper, for little games of word-making and sentence-building. Words may be grouped by vowel sounds, by initial or final letters, and various devices may be used to study words. Book excerpt: The antecedents of fantasy literature extend back to the very beginnings of storytelling itself, but modern fantasy became recognizable as a distinct literary form only in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with the publication of the novels of William Morris and the short stories of Lord Dunsany. The emphasis by these writers and their successors on ideal and sometimes less than ideal places and peoples who exist only in a realm of pure imagination laid the foundation for later works by J. R. R. Tolkien and many others. Book jacket.
