Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mother and Her Child The larger part Of the work was originally written by Dr. Lena K. Sadler, with certain chapters by Dr. William S. Sadler, but in the revision and re-arrangement of the manuscript so much work was done by each on the contributions of the other, that it was deemed best to bring the book out under joint author ship. The book is divided into three principal parts: Part I, deal ing with the experience of pregnancy from the beginning of expectancy to the convalescence of labor; Part II, dealing with the infant from its first day of life up to the weaning time; Part III, taking up the problems of the nursery from the weaning to the important period of adolescence. The advice given in this work is that which we have tried out by experience - both as parents and physicians - and we pass it on to mothers, fathers, and nurses with the belief that it will be of help in their efforts at practical and scientific child culture. We believe, also, that the expectant mother will be aided and encouraged in bearing the burdens which are common to motherhood by the advice and instruction offered. While we have drawn from our own professional and per sonal experience in the preparation of this book, we have also drawn freely from the present-day literature dealing with the subjects treated, and desire to acknowledge our indebtedness to the various writers and authorities. This little book makes no pretensions, nor is it an exhaustive treatise; its one aim is to attract attention to these things, and to give the reason for doing them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mother, Baby, and Nursery: A Manual for Mothers If the anxiety and solicitation of mothers in the care of their babes, especially the first born, shall be lessened and made somewhat easier, the mission of the book and the intent of the author is accomplished. The illustrations of the book are all from living pictures. It has been the habit of the author, when the attendant at a birth, to ask for a photo graph of the baby. Added to this collection have been gifts of the photographs of babies with whom we have had much to do as a physician. In this way has been gathered a collee tion of living pictures from which these illustrations have been taken. If any parent should recognize a familiar face in these pages, we beg pardon if they are sensitive and say it was used because that particular one fitted into place. I know a little Scotch girl she lives among the Highlands. Her home is hardly more than a hut her food, broth and bread. Her father keeps sheep on the hillsides; and, instead of wearing a coat, wraps himself in his plaid, for protection from the cold winds that drive before them great clouds of mist and snow among the mountains. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mother Stories The Mother Play is such a vast treasure house of Truth, that each one who seeks among its stores may bring to light some gem; and though, perhaps, I have missed its diamonds and rubies, I trust my string of pearls may find acceptance with some mother who is trying to live with her children. I have written my own mottoes, with a few exceptions, that I might emphasize the particular lesson which I endeavor to teach in the story; for every motto in the Mother Play comprehends so much that it is impossible to use the whole for a single subject. From The Bridge for in stance, which is replete with lessons, I have taken only one, for the story of the Little Traveler. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Lex, or the Legal Status of Mother and Child These laws originated many years ago under military despotisms, when fathers alone were strong, educated, responsible, possessed of property, and skilled in war. The welfare of the children, the good of the State, seemed to require that the ignorant, dependent, helpless mothers should not be invested with authority over their children. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mothers and Children The professor stopped and laughed; and with the pliability of youth, the class before him laughed in chorus. I myself laughed with the rest, but I laughed from sheer moral cowardice, for I had not found the story at all funny: Like Goldsmith, I had lived my life till then and had known nothing of Ezekiel be yond his name at the top of unread pages. And although I laughed, I hung my head. Of course, as soon as the class was dismissed I went and looked up Ezekiel in the Bible and read with astonishment and delight the splendid passages in the eighteenth chapter; but this tardy knowledge seemed to me but scant atonement for my former ignorance. It was only when I discovered a class mate (one among those who had laughed loudest at Goldsmith's simplicity) also surreptitiously investi gating Ezekiel that a gleam Of light filtered into my discouragement; and later, when tactful questioning Of my other classmates revealed the fact that not one of them had ever read a word Of Ezekiel, I was able once more to hold up my head. The small incident stuck in my memory, and as my capacity for reflection unfolded itself, it became, little by little, the peg on which many of my reflec tions were hung. Almost at once it occurred to me that, no matter how ridiculous he might have seemed to his enlightened contemporaries, I personally owed Goldsmith a debt of gratitude for having directed my attention to a noble piece of ethical thought; but I was graduated from college before I awoke to the hilarious probability that it was more than likely that some of the very men whom Goldsmith had button holed on that evening had been as ignorant of Ezekiel as the class of school-children, almost two hundred years later. I had a delighted and amused mental picture of bewigged and beribboned great gentlemen trying to be genteelly casual, as they sought information on the subject from their clerical acquaintances. And upon that idea I rounded the corner suddenly into another conception, namely, that possibly the curates and clergymen themselves, though they had read Ezekiel, never, until Goldsmith simple-mindedly pointed it out, had been aware of the eloquence of the ancient Hebrew.
