Book Synopsis Political Judgement by : Ronald Beiner
Download or read book Political Judgement written by Ronald Beiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1983. One of the basic capacities of man as a political being is his faculty of judgement. Yet for all the books on concepts like freedom, equality and authority, surprisingly little attention has been given to this topic in the tradition of Western political thought. What is the nature of political judgement? What endows us, as human beings, with the ability to make reasonable judgements about human affairs and to judge the common world we share with others? By what means to we secure validity for our judgements? What are the underlying conditions of this human capacity, and what implications does it have the understanding of politics? These questions, central as they are to any reflection on politics have rarely been addressed in a systematic way. This book examines Kant’s concept of taste and Aristotle’s concept of prudence, as well as recent works of political philosophy by Arendt, Gadamer and Habermas, all crucially influenced by Kant and Aristotle.
Book Synopsis Knowledge, Number and Reality by : Nils Kürbis
Download or read book Knowledge, Number and Reality written by Nils Kürbis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout his career, Keith Hossack has made outstanding contributions to the theory of knowledge, metaphysics and the philosophy of mathematics. This collection of previously unpublished papers begins with a focus on Hossack's conception of the nature of knowledge, his metaphysics of facts and his account of the relations between knowledge, agents and facts. Attention moves to Hossack's philosophy of mind and the nature of consciousness, before turning to the notion of necessity and its interaction with a priori knowledge. Hossack's views on the nature of proof, logical truth, conditionals and generality are discussed in depth. In the final chapters, questions about the identity of mathematical objects and our knowledge of them take centre stage, together with questions about the necessity and generality of mathematical and logical truths. Knowledge, Number and Reality represents some of the most vibrant discussions taking place in analytic philosophy today.

Book Synopsis Paul and His Mortality by : R. Gregory Jenks
Download or read book Paul and His Mortality written by R. Gregory Jenks and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many books are written on Jesus’ death, a gap exists in writings about the theological significance of a believer’s death, particularly in imitation of Jesus’. Paul, as a first apostolic witness who talked frequently about his own death, serves as a foundational model for how believers perceive their own death. While many have commented about Paul’s stance on topics such as forensic righteousness and substitutionary atonement, less is written about Paul’s personal experience and anticipation of his own death and the merit he assigned to it. Paul and His Mortality: Imitating Christ in the Face of Death explores how Paul faced his death in light of a ministry philosophy of imitation: as he sought to imitate Christ in his life, so he would imitate Christ as he faced his death. In his writings, Paul acknowledged his vulnerability to passive death as a mortal, that at any moment he might die or come near death. He gave us some of the most mournful and vitriolic words about how death is God’s and our enemy. But he also spoke openly about choosing death: “My aim is to know him . . . to be like him in his death.” This study seeks to show that Paul embraced death as a follower and imitator of Christ because the benefits of a good death supersede attempts at self-preservation. For him, embracing death is gain because it is honorable, because it reflects ultimate obedience to God, and because it is the reasonable response for those who understand that only Jesus’ death provides atonement. Studying mortality is paradoxically a study of life. Peering at the prospect of life’s end energizes life in the present. This urgency focuses on living with mission in step with God, the Creator and Sustainer of life, who is rightly referred to as Life itself. By focusing on mortality, we focus on Paul’s theology of life in its practical aspects, in particular, living life qualitatively, aware of God’s kingdom and mission and our limited quantity of days.
Book Synopsis Light in Darkness by : Alyssa Lyra Pitstick
Download or read book Light in Darkness written by Alyssa Lyra Pitstick and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007-02-12 with total page 475 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He descended into hell. Hans Urs von Balthasar, one of the most influential theologians of the twentieth century, placed this affirmation of the Nicene Creed at the heart of his reflection on the world-altering events of Holy Week, asserting that this identification of God with the human experience is at the "absolute center" of the Christian faith. Yet is such a descent to suffering really the essence of Catholic belief about the mystery of Holy Saturday? Alyssa Lyra Pitstick's Light in Darkness -- the first comprehensive treatment of Balthasar's theology of Holy Saturday -- draws on the multiple yet unified resources of authoritative Catholic teaching on Christ's descent to challenge Balthasar's conclusions. Pitstick conducts a thorough investigation of Balthasar's position that Christ suffered in his descent into hell and asks whether that is compatible with traditional teaching about Christ. Light in Darkness is a thorough argument for the existence and authority of a traditional Catholic doctrine of Christ's descent as manifested in creeds, statements of popes and councils, Scripture, and art from Eastern and Western traditions. Pitstick's carefully argued, contrarian work is sure to spur debate across the theological spectrum.

Book Synopsis A Resurrection Like Christ's by : David W. Cooke
Download or read book A Resurrection Like Christ's written by David W. Cooke and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a refutation of the Intermediate State, which teaches a separation of the soul and body of the saint at death, and the future bodily resurrection of all mankind at the Final Judgment. The Final Judgment is the resurrection of the lost to judgment. The Christian is resurrected body and soul to heaven at death, thus the title of the book, A Resurrection Like Christ’s. Christ after his time on earth entered heaven to receive glory upon his ascension, so shall the saints. The author has given the reader the broad arc of redemption history concerning resurrection in a manner which is logical and conforms to the biblical texts. The OT and NT are brought together to form a single theme. He writes about a difficult topic in a manner that can be read by any person with a basic knowledge of the Bible. Although not afraid to tackle the difficult texts, he does so in a concise manner to keep the points of the book in the mind of the reader. These points are the believer’s bodily resurrection to heaven at death, and the resurrection of those who rejected Christ on Judgment Day.

It should tell the young collegian, and the presumably older non-collegian who takes it up with serious intent, a number of important things. It should answer the questions naturally to be expected of the person who wishes to be introduced,—questions such as these: What is philosophy? How did it come into existence? What interesting things have happened to develop it or to hinder its development? Aeterna Press
