Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Morphotectonics, the relation between geomorphology and (neo)tectonics is fundamental to the understanding of landscape evolution. Stressing mainly the quantitative interpretation of field observations, this monograph compares the morphological structure of drainage systems, river courses, glacial forms, volcanic landscapes and mass movements with joint orientations. The latter are indicative of the neotectonic stresses; and thus inferences on the genesis of the morphological forms can be drawn. The data on outcrops on all six continents and on islands in all major oceans have been acquired to a large extent by the author himself. The book, therefore, represents a first-hand account of the work and its relevance which has been done worldwide over the last 30 years.

Book excerpt: 1.1 PROLOGUE The bathyorthographical map of the Western Peninsular India including areas of Maharashtra and Northern Karnataka shows three distinct features from west to east, viz. Konkan Coastal Belt (KCB), Sahyadri Uplands and main Plateau (Fig. 1.1). These areas are mainly covered by nearly horizontally disposed basaltic lava flows of Deccan Traps of Upper Cretaceous to Eocene age. The main plateau region is known as Deccan Plateau, which comprises northern Maharashtra plateau and Karnataka plateau. It is bounded by Son-Narmada-Tapi Belt (SONATA) to its north while Konkan Coastal Belt (KCB) to its west, which are seismic belts of western India (Fig.1.2a). The later belt is southerly extension of Cambay rift which is trending NNW-SSE. This region was considered as most stable part of the Indian Peninsular Shield. The earthquakes of Koyna (1967; M, 6.7) and Killari (1993; M, 6.2) of Maharashtra have changed the view that the Deccan Plateau is undeformed and most stable part of the Indian Peninsular Shield. Both of these events are now considered as the result of intra-plate deformation and fall in Stable Continental Region (SCR) category (Rajendran and Rajendran, 2003).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geomorphology, the discipline which analyzes the history and nature of the earth's surface, deals with the landforms produced by erosion, weathering, deposition, transport and tectonic processes. In recent decades there have been major developments in the discipline and these are reflected in this major Encyclopedia, the first such reference work in the field to be published for thirty-five years. Encyclopedia of Geomorphology has been produced in association with the International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) and has a truly global perspective. The entries have been written by an international editorial team of contributors, drawn from over thirty countries, who are all among the leading experts in the discipline. In two lavishly illustrated volumes, Encyclopedia contains nearly 700 alphabetically organized entries to provide a comprehensive guide both to specific landforms and to the major types of geomorphological processes that create them. The Encyclopedia also demonstrates the major developments that have taken place in recent years in our knowledge of tectonic and climatic changes and in the use of new techniques such as modelling, remote sensing and process measurement. Older concepts, however, are not forgotten and provide an historical perspective on the development of ideas. Both accessible and authoritative, Encyclopedia of Geomorphology is destined to become the definitive resource for students, researchers and applied practitioners in the field of geomorphology and the cognate disciplines of geography, earth science, sedimentology and environmental science.

Worked examples and diagrams are provided for many entries, including 15 new illustrations. All existing entries have been fully revised and updated for this new edition, and there is now expanded coverage of Geographical Information Systems (GIS), and glacial geomorphology, as well as the inclusion of more international examples within definitions, broadening its coverage considerably. The dictionary includes more than 400 new entries, including economies of scope, marginalization, rurality, and tax havens and offshore financial centres. Recommended web links are suggested for many entries, accessible and kept up to date via the Dictionary of Geography companion website. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1963, this classic textbook was revised fully for the 1972 edition. The author presents a comprehensive account of all topics falling within the domain of structural geology in his characteristically objective, scientific and logical manner. The book pays particular attention to definitions and the origin of terms. Geology is a global science and this book used examples and ideas from work in many countries. The book is comprehensive in scope, dealing not only with secondary structures and tectonics, but also with primary structures of secondary and igneous rocks. This was the first textbook to deal with rock material as two-phase systems rather than as solids and this approach is continued in this reissued edition by analysis of concepts such as ocean-floor spreading and plate tectonics
